Song Tan’s Chronicle - Chapter 149.1
Eldest Song was so angry he wanted to flip the table:
“Are you really that desperate for ten yuan?”
Mao Li stiffened her neck and replied, “Of course, I am! How could I not be? The eldest one doesn’t make money, just stays at home all day doing face masks and manicures. The younger one still needs me to pay for her interest classes and kindergarten. How can we live without saving money?”
Her words had a hidden meaning, taking a dig at her daughter-in-law, who neither worked nor contributed financially.
But as the saying goes, “The strong will always meet someone stronger.” Sun Yanyan was focused on the TV, acting as if she hadn’t heard a word.
Feeling like she had punched cotton, Mao Li grew angrier and turned her frustration toward Song Tan and Song Hongmei:
“And Hongmei, she’s supposed to be an aunt, but she’s so stingy! Whenever Tan Tan gives her something, she takes it all without leaving anything for us. This aunt and niece pair really know how to keep secrets!”
Hearing this, Sun Yanyan remembered something: “Mom, didn’t Aunt give us a bag of locust flowers the day before yesterday?”
Mao Li huffed angrily, “Those flowers were useless; they got squashed by the dozens of pounds of lettuce while moving things. How could we keep them? I threw them away that night.”
“Oh dear,” Sun Yanyan lamented, “Why did you throw them away? The locust flowers are expensive in the market, ten yuan a pound.”
Hearing this, Mao Li stood up in frustration:
“Stop wasting time at home and come to the market with me.”
Sun Yanyan didn’t want to move—her mother-in-law always tried to take money from her, likely to give it to her sister-in-law. She wasn’t foolish enough to spend her own money!
“Why go…” she grumbled, reluctant.
Mao Li swallowed her anger and said, “To buy vegetables! What else! I’ve been catering to you all day—if you still want to eat lettuce for lunch, then don’t go.”
Sun Yanyan quickly got up and followed.
She wouldn’t spend her money, but she had enough of eating lettuce.
Thinking for a moment, she added, “Mom, I think Aunt also took some bamboo shoots when she left. Tan Tan mentioned selling them, so she might be at the market today. Should we go to the riverside market?”
That market was a bit further away, and the last time they went there, things had not gone well. Mao Li had sworn never to return.
But feeling frustrated, she snorted coldly and eventually turned that way.
And Sun Yanyan was right—Song Tan was indeed there today.
She was selling vegetables alone this time, with a large QR code stuck on the back of her pickup truck. She didn’t even bother to take the bamboo shoots down but squatted in the truck bed, exchanging money for goods.
The scene was lively and noisy; if not for the crowd of elderly folks (since young people generally had no fighting power in a market rush), it might have looked like a concert set among piles of bamboo shoots in the back of a pickup.
Though Qiao Qiao hadn’t come today, Song Tan was not overwhelmed handling things by herself.
—After over a month of continuous cultivation, she was still in the Qi Refining stage, but she had made some progress and was beginning to develop her divine sense.
While she didn’t use it often due to the scarcity and preciousness of spiritual energy, enhancing her memory a bit and keeping track of payments and orders was quite easy.
Not to mention, she wasn’t entirely on her own.
The vegetable vendor beside her was also helping, collecting cash!
After all, the elderly customers didn’t all know how to use smartphones smoothly.
You might think that they were both in the same business, and therefore competitors, so why would the vendor leave his own stall to help her?
Well, it depended on the situation!
If it were the vendor next to him, he might only watch the stall while they used the bathroom, but he would never leave his stall to help.
But for Song Tan…
