Song Tan’s Chronicle - Chapter 50
The small pickup truck, carrying the little yellow duck toy, the puppies, and Qiao Qiao, cruised steadily down the road.
Just then, a van ahead suddenly pulled over.
Song Tan was puzzled to see it was the delivery guy from Fengfeng Express. He hesitated for a moment before speaking, “You said you needed to send something, but you didn’t come. Did you go with another company?”
Realizing he might have sounded too eager, he quickly added, “If you’re sending fresh produce, we at Fengfeng are the fastest. If you send a lot, the discount makes it not much more expensive…”
That was a stretch. Fengfeng Express prided itself on speed, and while they weren’t three times faster, their rates, even with discounts, were about three times higher.
Song Tan smiled, liking the straightforward young man. She had hoped her videos would go viral, and she would be shipping dozens of orders daily.
But her cultivation skills couldn’t boost her online following…
She sighed and apologized, “Sorry, I’ve been going to the city every morning, so I take some deliveries with me.”
The young man’s expression relaxed—he still had a chance if she wasn’t using another service! Feeling a bit self-conscious for stopping her mid-road, he quickly waved it off, “No problem, just checking. I got some dry ice packs and foam boxes from the city, and the dry ice packs were hard to get. Just wanted to ask…”
“Anyway, I need to get to the city to make tonight’s deliveries. Message me if you need anything shipped!”
Such enthusiasm!
Song Tan sighed and continued driving home, wishing for more traffic to her videos.
She spent an entire night editing videos but didn’t get a single comment!
…
That same morning, Secretary Wang had just returned to his office with some documents when he got a call:
“Mr. Wang, Fengfeng Express is at the gate with a box of fresh produce for you. Can you accept it?”
Secretary Wang thought for a moment and replied, “Please bring it to the gate of the adjacent compound. I’ll call security to let you in.”
Soon after, his boss walked in, overhearing part of the conversation, and asked casually, “What are you receiving?”
Secretary Wang stood there, watching as the delivery man brought in a large box, and couldn’t help but recall his embarrassing vegetable-buying experience:
“It’s the vegetables from that dinner you had at the People’s Hospital. I found out they’re sold by a local farmer and thought you’d like them, so I ordered more.”
But looking at the large box, Secretary Wang realized he might have overdone it.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, he wondered if his boss might think he was out of touch with the people.
However, his boss’s eyes lit up, his face flushing slightly, “Secretary Wang, you’re so considerate… Ever since that meal, I feel like I’ve been eating grass instead of vegetables! Good job!”
Turning, he looked at the box with interest, “What kind of vegetables? Got any shepherd’s purse? If so, we can make dumplings.”
Secretary Wang felt even more embarrassed, “Sir, they said the wild vegetables are out of season. This time, it’s just one kind…”
His boss was puzzled, “Why are you being so hesitant?”
Secretary Wang was close to tears. He had been so impressed by the taste that he impulsively ordered without considering the details. Now, he found it hard to explain:
“It’s… milk vetch.”
“Milk vetch?”
As an experienced leader, his boss was familiar with rural life and had a good impression of milk vetch.
He didn’t mind; he was just curious, “With all the rich food we eat, even milk vetch is becoming popular now.”
The delivery man opened the box, revealing a foam container with ice packs and air pillows, keeping the contents at an ideal temperature. Inside were ten bundles of fresh, neatly tied milk vetch. The delivery man, professionally trained, was stunned:
“…This really is premium stuff.”
He murmured.
The boss and Secretary Wang were also taken aback.
They picked up a bundle and, despite themselves, their mouths watered. Trying to cover it up, the boss said, “This looks really fresh.”
Secretary Wang relaxed, regaining his composure and professionalism, “I’ll take this to your house after work.”
The boss smiled, “This is quite a journey. How much was it? I don’t want to take advantage of you. And let’s try this milk vetch for lunch—send it to the canteen.”
Half-jokingly, half-seriously, he continued, “Our province has beautiful scenery but lacks a flagship agricultural product. The wild vegetables we had were truly unique. If we can supply similar products steadily and in large quantities, even at a high price, it could be a new path for rural revitalization.”
“Building a new countryside isn’t just about new houses and roads!”
“Food is fundamental, and this area has great potential!”
The delivery man, now at the door, overheard the conversation and thought: This leader seems pretty decent…
Meanwhile, Secretary Wang, still in the office, smiled wryly, “You’re right; the price is high—twenty yuan per pound, not including shipping!”
Feeling a bit aggrieved—how could they charge so much without including shipping?
His boss was also surprised.
“Twenty yuan per pound?” he murmured, “That’s really high.”
But remembering the taste, he grew more enthusiastic, “If this can be scaled up, even small farmers can thrive, creating jobs for thousands!”
“Good, good! Secretary Wang, keep an eye on this. See if they can increase production!”
Secretary Wang felt a surge of passion—if this succeeded, the future… Oh, he didn’t dare to imagine!
He steadied himself and agreed, then took the box to the canteen, “Let’s see if we can taste it for lunch.”
He could only pray, “Great Marx, let this taste good!”
Otherwise, if the boss’s interest was piqued only to find the quality lacking, it would be a disaster…
“Wait!”
The boss called out again, “Last time, we didn’t know the price and ate the doctor’s vegetables. Arrange to send him some produce as compensation.”
Secretary Wang nodded but couldn’t help sighing—
That Dr. Zhang might seem unassuming, but he sure was lucky!
With this gesture, he’d be favored at the hospital. Even if he didn’t get a promotion, he’d at least avoid any trouble.
