Chapter 18: Unlimited Firepower, The Strongest Sniper
Once outside, Dongfang Ke addressed the eleven people in front of her, “Do you all know what our mission is?”
“Yes!” the eleven responded in unison, their voices loud and clear.
“Move out!”
With Dongfang Ke’s command, everyone boarded a military vehicle. Liang Yu took the driver’s seat, and Dongfang Ke, holding her katana, sat in the passenger seat.
“Let’s roll!”
Liang Yu turned the key, the engine roared to life, and with a stomp on the gas pedal, the vehicle sped off in an instant.
Their mission was to clear a path to the Meilian district in the city and eliminate any zombies in the surrounding area. They had to return by dusk at the latest.
Zombies became more active at night, and it wasn’t safe for so many people to be out. The soldiers were still human, and their lives couldn’t be risked just for the safety of the people in the shelter.
Liang Yu drove the vehicle through the forest, occasionally hearing roars as a few zombies emerged. Their slow speed meant they couldn’t keep up with the car.
Some faster zombies managed to catch up, but Liang Yu checked his detector and saw they were only B-level zombies—fast but lacking any special abilities.
The soldiers in the back quickly took care of the B-level zombies.
Before long, they reached the city’s entrance. From here, they could no longer proceed by car.
Once everyone got out, Liang Yu parked the vehicle in a hidden spot to prevent any desperate survivors from stealing it.
To be extra cautious, he removed the keys and placed them in his bulletproof vest pocket, patting it for reassurance.
After regrouping, Dongfang Ke, as the team leader, laid out the plan. She would lead four people to advance on the ground, Hong Shan would take another four to move through the buildings, and Liang Yu and Lai Qingxue would find a high vantage point for long-range support.
It was a solid plan, but there was one concern: could Hong Shan handle leading four experienced soldiers?
Hong Shan voiced his doubts, “Captain, I’m still just a student. I don’t think I’m suited to lead four veterans.”
Liang Yu quickly interjected, “Why so much talking? If the captain trusts you to lead, then lead. Don’t you get it?”
Liang Yu’s words left Dongfang Ke, who was about to scold Hong Shan, speechless. He then gave Hong Shan a knowing look.
After being roommates for two or three years, Hong Shan understood the message. “My bad. I’ll make sure to complete the mission!”
Dongfang Ke nodded, “Alright, let’s get started. Be careful, these zombies are merciless monsters!”
“Understood!”
With that, the three squads set off.
Dongfang Ke’s team advanced on the ground, cutting down zombies left and right—either falling to her katana or being gunned down by the other soldiers.
Hong Shan’s team moved through the buildings, facing thrilling and dangerous encounters. At one point, they turned a corner and found an entire floor packed with zombies.
Hong Shan sighed, ‘Why do I always get the tough assignments?’ After some grumbling, he and his team quickly took care of the zombies with a flurry of gunfire.
For any zombies that weren’t fully dead, Hong Shan finished them off with a knife, ensuring they were decapitated.
Meanwhile, Liang Yu and Lai Qingxue weren’t having an easy time either. As snipers, they needed to find a high vantage point, and the rooftop of a residential building was ideal. However, climbing the stairs would take at least half an hour.
By the time they reached the top, who knew how far Dongfang Ke’s team would have advanced?
So, Liang Yu decided to take the elevator. To his surprise, it was still operational. But when the doors opened, both he and Lai Qingxue immediately regretted it.
The walls were splattered with blood, and several corpses lay on the floor, along with severed limbs. The scene was straight out of a horror movie.
Even though Lai Qingxue had mentally prepared herself, she was still terrified and collapsed into Liang Yu’s arms. He sighed and helped her into the elevator.
When they reached the 18th floor, the doors opened to reveal a horde of zombies. Without hesitation, Liang Yu raised his rifle and began shooting, taking down one zombie after another with precise shots.
After clearing the area, Liang Yu led a dazed Lai Qingxue out of the elevator. The building had 23 floors, but the elevator only went up to the 18th, so they had to climb the remaining five floors.
As they entered the stairwell, a cold draft sent shivers down their spines, raising goosebumps on their skin.
Liang Yu stayed alert, scanning the surroundings. Suddenly, a half-zombie rolled down the stairs. It had lost its lower half but was still trying to join the fray.
Liang Yu wasn’t about to let it get away. This half-zombie was too late to the party, so he put it out of its misery with a single shot.
They continued up the stairs and soon reached the rooftop.
Liang Yu took a quick look over the edge, noting the height, and then turned to Lai Qingxue, “I’m counting on you to watch my back. Be careful.”
“No problem!” Lai Qingxue said confidently, patting her chest.
She had already recovered, her adaptability shining through. After all, she had been through her fair share of intense situations.
Liang Yu nodded and set up his sniper rifle.
Meanwhile, in one of the buildings, Hong Shan and his team were surrounded by zombies. Just as one was about to bite a teammate, Liang Yu, from hundreds of meters away, pulled the trigger.
The bullet flew through the air, reaching the zombie in just three seconds and piercing its head.
The powerful recoil nearly knocked Liang Yu over. His hands trembled slightly as he shook them off, trying to get used to the heavy sniper rifle.
Hong Shan, shocked, quickly pulled his blood-covered teammate to safety.
With Liang Yu providing long-range support, Hong Shan and his team continued to fight, their coordination seamless.
By the end, Hong Shan and his teammates were exhausted, sitting on the stairs. Through the window, Hong Shan gave Liang Yu a thumbs-up.
Liang Yu smiled in return.
He was tired too. Though he had gotten used to the recoil, the constant impact had left his shoulder sore.
He lifted his left arm to stretch, and just then, the system’s voice rang in his head.
“Host has saved a human. Mission triggered: Snipe 200 B-level zombies.”
“Mission reward: Enhanced physical abilities. Mission failure penalty: Loss of one skill.”
“Host’s physical abilities are currently below average. To assist in completing the mission, the system will automatically enhance the host’s physical strength by 30%.”
“Mission time limit: Two hours.”
Hearing the mission, Liang Yu couldn’t help but wonder if the system could read his mind. He had just been complaining about his physical condition, and now it was offering a reward to improve it. Not bad at all.
But the mission itself was tricky. B-level zombies weren’t that common, and sniping 200 of them in one go would be tough.
Plus, B-level zombies were fast-moving targets, making it even more challenging for Liang Yu.
‘This is going to be tough,’ he thought. But Liang Yu wasn’t one to give up easily. He raised his sniper rifle, activated the detector, and got to work on the mission!
