Chapter 19: A-Level Zombie, Indestructible
Meanwhile, Dongfang Ke’s squad found themselves in danger, surrounded by zombies on all sides. The five of them were forced to climb onto the roof of a truck.
From their vantage point, they continued firing at the horde below. Any zombies that got too close were swiftly cut down by Dongfang Ke’s katana.
Seeing the situation, Liang Yu quickly pulled the trigger, taking down four or five zombies in an instant.
Dongfang Ke, ever vigilant, glanced around and spotted Liang Yu on a rooftop. She smiled slightly.
‘Not bad, kid. Hitting targets this accurately from over a thousand meters away—impressive!’
Liang Yu then focused on locating the B-level zombies within the horde.
The first one he spotted was bouncing around on top of an abandoned car. ‘Was this zombie an athlete when it was alive?’ Liang Yu wondered, watching its agility.
Just as the B-level zombie was about to leap toward Dongfang Ke’s group, Liang Yu pulled the trigger, killing it instantly.
The bullet’s powerful penetration knocked the B-level zombie off the car, crushing a group of zombies beneath it.
Without pausing, Liang Yu continued scanning for the next B-level zombie. After all, he had only two hours to complete the mission.
Helping Dongfang Ke’s team had already cost him three minutes, and now every second counted.
Behind him, Lai Qingxue wasn’t idle either. Due to the loud noise of the KM80 sniper rifle, the remaining zombies in the building were converging on the rooftop.
Lai Qingxue grabbed the door leading to the rooftop and began shooting through a nearby window, taking down zombies as they approached the final staircase.
She had been shooting for a while and was starting to feel tired, but she didn’t let her guard down.
She remembered Liang Yu’s words: ‘I’m counting on you to watch my back!’
Those words warmed her heart. A man entrusting his back to you—could the meaning be any clearer?
Though Liang Yu hadn’t said anything outright, Lai Qingxue had long since figured out how he felt.
Besides, how could Liang Yu not be attracted to her? She was beautiful, cute, and obedient, always by his side.
Back to the task at hand, after about ten minutes, the flow of zombies slowed. Only one or two stragglers appeared, likely coming from other parts of the building.
This gave Lai Qingxue a moment to rest. She sat on a brick, watching Liang Yu as he fired shot after shot. He looked so cool, so efficient.
‘Men with sniper rifles are the coolest,’ Lai Qingxue thought, momentarily lost in admiration.
Unbeknownst to her, a zombie had silently crept up from another entrance and was now right behind her.
Liang Yu turned his head, spotted the zombie, and quickly raised his handgun. The bullet whizzed past Lai Qingxue’s ear, hitting the zombie square in the head.
Startled, Lai Qingxue turned to see the headless zombie collapse at her feet.
Liang Yu holstered his gun and shouted, “Lai Qingxue, focus! One more slip-up like that, and you won’t be standing here to talk to me!”
Lai Qingxue put her gun down, clasped her hands together, and bowed toward Liang Yu, “I’m sorry! I promise it won’t happen again!”
“Go check if there are any other entrances!”
“Got it!”
Lai Qingxue grabbed her gun and went to inspect the rooftop. In buildings like this, the rooftops were often connected, and she had only closed one door.
There were four other entrances she hadn’t checked. Upon finding them, she quickly closed the doors and cleared out any nearby zombies.
After barricading the doors with bricks and debris—likely left behind by scavengers—Lai Qingxue returned to her post.
Meanwhile, Liang Yu continued his hunt for B-level zombies. The mission was almost complete, and he had used less than half the allotted time.
With only forty more B-level zombies to go, finishing within the hour wouldn’t be a problem.
Another shot, another B-level zombie down.
Along the way, Liang Yu also helped clear out zombies near Dongfang Ke and Hong Shan’s squads. Suddenly, a figure in the distance caught his attention.
It was a towering zombie, at least two meters tall. Liang Yu used his detector to scan it, and the result made him gasp—it was an A-level zombie.
Liang Yu’s heart skipped a beat. The last A-level zombie, a wall-climbing one, had nearly killed him in the sewers. Now, just three days later, he was facing another one. His luck was something else.
However, Liang Yu wasn’t eager to engage this A-level zombie just yet. His priority was completing the mission.
What was strange, though, was that the A-level zombie was surrounded by a group of B-level zombies. They seemed to be watching it, almost as if they were planning to devour it.
This reminded Liang Yu of the zombie evolution process—how they would consume their own kind or humans to mutate.
A-level zombies were incredibly powerful, so it made sense that B-level zombies would target them to evolve.
With so many B-level zombies attacking an A-level one, the B-levels might actually stand a chance.
But Liang Yu didn’t care about their evolution. He pulled the trigger, taking down another B-level zombie.
As soon as that B-level zombie fell, the others launched their attack on the A-level zombie, and Liang Yu continued picking off the B-levels from a distance.
One by one, they fell to his bullets.
Finally, after half an hour, Liang Yu completed his mission.
As the system notification sounded, Liang Yu’s body began to strengthen. There were no visible changes on the outside, but internally, the difference was significant.
His muscles, including his eight-pack abs, became nearly perfect. If he took off his shirt, he’d look like a professional bodybuilder.
Liang Yu casually picked up a rock from the ground and crushed it into dust with minimal effort.
He was quite satisfied with the physical enhancement. Now, it was time to deal with that A-level zombie.
Despite being attacked by the B-level zombies, the A-level zombie hadn’t been overwhelmed. In fact, it was the B-level zombies that were being beaten back.
Liang Yu set up his sniper rifle again, aiming for the A-level zombie’s head. He pulled the trigger, and the bullet flew toward its target.
But when the bullet hit the A-level zombie’s head, it had no effect!
The bullet ricocheted off the zombie’s skull, leaving Liang Yu stunned. ‘Could this A-level zombie have an indestructible body?’
A terrifying thought crossed Liang Yu’s mind. If this zombie was truly indestructible, things were about to get complicated.
If bullets couldn’t penetrate it, what was he supposed to do? Engage it in hand-to-hand combat?
After all, Liang Yu’s body had just been enhanced. Before, he could only punch through glass, but now he could probably punch through a wall.
His physical strength was off the charts. An indestructible zombie might be a challenge, but Liang Yu wasn’t too worried.
Still, he didn’t want to believe that the zombie’s ability was invulnerability. Hand-to-hand combat would be too risky.
So, Liang Yu continued firing, targeting different parts of the A-level zombie’s body, hoping to find a weak spot.
But no matter where he shot, the bullets had no effect. Liang Yu was getting frustrated.
‘Is this really going to come down to a fistfight?’ he thought.
Just then, the A-level zombie finished off the B-level zombies and began moving toward Dongfang Ke’s location.
