Chapter 22: The Zombie Horde Disperses, Seeing the Light Again
Time passed slowly, and before long, the pile of dead zombies had blocked the entrance to the shelter.
Occasionally, one or two zombies managed to crawl through the gaps between the corpses, but Liang Yu swiftly took them out. There wasn’t much danger left.
As the zombie flow stopped, Zhang Jian ordered his men to start clearing the bodies from the entrance.
After a full day of fighting, Liang Yu and the others were exhausted and returned to rest. If anything dangerous happened outside, they could be woken up.
Back in their room, Liang Yu, for the first time, lay down on the couch, while Hong Shan remained unusually quiet, not speaking to him.
Hong Shan still couldn’t shake the belief that Liang Yu was some kind of alien. He remained suspicious of Liang Yu’s newfound strength.
Even as he lay in bed, Hong Shan’s eyes never left Liang Yu, determined to uncover how the “alien” had replaced his friend.
Liang Yu was getting annoyed. Being stared at like that would make anyone uncomfortable.
And to make it worse, the one staring at him was a grown man—his roommate, no less. Liang Yu was starting to wonder if Hong Shan had… ‘other’ interests. If that were the case, Liang Yu could only describe Hong Shan as “too well-hidden.”
Finally, Liang Yu couldn’t take it anymore.
“Hong Shan, are you sick or something!? Why aren’t you sleeping? Why are you staring at me!?”
Hong Shan sat up abruptly, looking at Liang Yu with a serious expression. “I ‘will’ find the evidence. I ‘will’ save the real Liang Yu!”
Liang Yu couldn’t help but curse, “You’re the one who’s sick! Just because I got stronger, you think I’m an alien?”
“Are you going to kill me the day I lift a car with one hand!?”
Hong Shan shook his head. “No, not that far.”
“But if you ‘are’ an alien, we’re all living in the same galaxy, right?”
“Think about it—we’re neighbors. If I kill you, it could ruin relations between our planets.”
“And if we ever want to go on interstellar vacations, and your people hold a grudge, I’d be the one responsible for the whole planet’s troubles!”
Liang Yu was dumbfounded. Hong Shan’s imagination was truly out of this world—literally. He had already started thinking about interstellar travel.
“Relax, I’m not an alien. And even if I were, I wouldn’t ruin your space vacations!” Liang Yu said, hands behind his head, staring at the ceiling.
“It better be that way.”
With that, Hong Shan lay back down, but his eyes still didn’t leave Liang Yu.
Liang Yu didn’t care anymore. ‘Let him stare. After all, I am pretty handsome.’
Meanwhile, Lai Qingxue returned, holding Liang Yu’s phone. She went off to study, practicing the shooting and close-combat techniques she hadn’t mastered during their time in Donghai City.
‘She’s a good student,’ Liang Yu thought. ‘She’s already reviewing her mistakes right after practice.’
Recognizing and correcting mistakes—that’s the mark of a true scholar.
Before long, Hong Shan fell asleep. Seeing this, Liang Yu breathed a sigh of relief.
‘Finally, that annoying gaze is gone.’ Liang Yu felt more relaxed than ever.
He pulled out a pack of spicy snacks from his backpack, tore it open, and popped one into his mouth. Delicious.
Eating spicy snacks in the apocalypse—now that was something few could pull off.
The spicy aroma wafted over to Lai Qingxue, who looked around and quickly spotted the snacks in Liang Yu’s hand.
“Spicy snacks!?” Lai Qingxue exclaimed.
Hearing her, Liang Yu turned and asked, “Want some?”
Lai Qingxue nodded eagerly, like a little chick pecking at grain. Liang Yu walked over and handed her the pack.
Without hesitation, Lai Qingxue took one and ate it, savoring the long-forgotten taste.
Watching her enjoy the snack so much, Liang Yu couldn’t help but wonder if they were eating the same thing. Her reaction was like night and day compared to his.
‘Whatever,’ Liang Yu thought. ‘Time to rest.’
Outside, Zhang Jian and his men were busy clearing the zombie corpses, loading them onto trucks to be taken to a large pit for burning.
Initially, they had planned to bury the bodies, but Zhang Jian reconsidered. After all, they might need to cultivate the land in the future. If the zombie virus spread through the soil and contaminated their crops, it would be disastrous.
After weighing the options, Zhang Jian decided that burning the bodies was the safest choice. High temperatures would disinfect and eliminate the virus completely.
About an hour later, the entrance was finally cleared, and the shelter once again saw the light of day. It hadn’t been easy.
Looking at the devastated trees outside, Zhang Jian breathed a sigh of relief. ‘Good thing we followed Liang Yu’s advice.’
If they hadn’t, it wouldn’t be zombie bodies lying outside—it would be the corpses of the survivors.
After clearing the last of the bodies and filling the pit, Zhang Jian didn’t hesitate. He set the pile ablaze, burning everything to ashes, turning the zombies into nothing but dust in the wind.
But there was no time to rest. They immediately began repairing the defenses, moving the barricades they had brought inside the shelter back to the entrance.
Even though the zombie horde had passed, the threat wasn’t over. Zombies would return.
In the apocalypse, there was no room for complacency. If you let your guard down, zombies could attack from all sides.
And with nightfall approaching, the danger would only increase. As mentioned before, zombies became more aggressive and dangerous at night.
The repairs were straightforward, but the real challenge was the collapsed entrance tunnel. They needed cement, sand, and bricks to rebuild it.
It was a big job, so Zhang Jian recruited a few strong survivors to help.
With more hands on deck, the outer defenses were quickly restored. Zhang Jian assigned a few men to guard the area and sent a team to patrol the perimeter, ready to shoot any zombies on sight.
Zhang Jian and the remaining workers then focused on rebuilding the entrance tunnel, mixing cement, laying bricks, and adding sand. In about an hour, the job was done.
‘There’s a reason China’s construction speed is world-famous,’ Zhang Jian thought, impressed by how quickly they had rebuilt the tunnel.
After leaving a few men to rotate shifts outside, Zhang Jian led the rest back inside the shelter. But his work wasn’t over.
It was now evening, and it was time to distribute food to the survivors. Zhang Jian didn’t rest for a moment, dedicating himself fully to the task.
Meanwhile, the survivors who had helped with the repairs decided to join Zhang Jian’s army. Though they lacked experience, Zhang Jian would need someone to train them.
After thinking it over, Zhang Jian realized there was only one person for the job—Liang Yu.
Little did Liang Yu know, as he slept soundly, he had already been assigned a new job. Tomorrow was going to be another busy day!
