Chapter 25: Assigning the Mission, Heading to Donghai
As the eight recruits walked in with dejected faces, Zhang Jian approached Liang Yu and asked, “Brother, what did you do to them?”
“Nothing much, just beat all of them by myself,” Liang Yu replied casually.
“That’s nothing?!” Zhang Jian exclaimed. “Brother, take it easy on them! If they quit, our defenses will be in trouble!”
“Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing,” Liang Yu said, taking a bite of his meal. “By the way, I’m taking them out this afternoon.”
Zhang Jian, confused, asked, “Out? For what?”
The zombie horde had just passed, and who knew what dangers still lurked outside? Zhang Jian was uneasy about letting a group of rookies go out.
After all, he had just carefully selected these eight recruits and didn’t want to lose them right away.
“We’re going to explore the ruins of Donghai City and practice shooting,” Liang Yu said nonchalantly, as if it were no big deal.
“Shooting practice?” Zhang Jian repeated, then realized he was missing the point. “Wait, you’re taking them straight to the front lines?”
Liang Yu nodded, “Exactly. Straight to the front lines.”
“Zhang, you know the zombie horde just passed through. Donghai City has probably been swept clean by the tornadoes.”
“We’re going now for two reasons: one, to search for supplies, and two, to practice shooting.”
“In the apocalypse, bullets are precious. We don’t have the luxury of wasting them on stationary targets.”
Hearing Liang Yu’s reasoning, Zhang Jian nodded in agreement.
Liang Yu wasn’t wrong. Donghai City had been reduced to ruins, with only a few scattered zombies wandering around.
Most of the zombies inside the buildings had been crushed by the collapsing structures during the storm, leaving only a handful.
Even Lai Qingxue could probably handle them, let alone a group of men.
After thinking it over, Zhang Jian patted Liang Yu on the shoulder and said, “Alright, brother. Go ahead. I’ll take care of things here at the shelter.”
Liang Yu nodded and continued, “Our mission is to retrieve seeds from the agricultural market on the west side of Donghai City to ensure the shelter’s future development.”
“You know as well as I do, Zhang, that our food supply is running low. And this shelter is small. We’ll need to expand in the future.”
“Getting seeds will solve the food problem first. After that, you can focus on housing.”
“That’s the only way we can sustain ourselves long-term. Who knows, you might even make it to the end.”
Hearing Liang Yu’s plan, Zhang Jian laughed, “Brother, you’ve really thought this through. You young people have a better grasp on things than us old-timers!”
“Come on, Zhang, you’re not that old. We just grew up in different times, so our perspectives are different,” Liang Yu said, continuing to eat.
Hearing Liang Yu’s thoughtful words, Zhang Jian felt a bit overwhelmed. He had joined the military because he wasn’t good at studying!
Waving his hand, Zhang Jian said, “Alright, alright, brother. Enough with the fancy talk. Finish your meal, then come by my office to get a permit and pick up your weapons.”
“Got it.”
With that, Zhang Jian left.
After lunch, Liang Yu went to Zhang Jian’s office to get the permit, then led the recruits to the armory.
Turning on the lights, Liang Yu said to the recruits, “Go ahead and pick your weapons. Remember, don’t pick the fanciest ones—choose what feels right for you.”
“Understood, Instructor!”
“Good, go ahead!”
With that, the eight recruits entered the armory to select their weapons.
Zhang Tie Zhu immediately picked up a gun and aimed it at Xiao Yang Bo. Liang Yu quickly redirected the barrel and said, “Remember, never point your gun at your teammates!”
“Got it, Instructor,” Zhang Tie Zhu said, standing up straight.
Liang Yu moved on.
Du Heng Zhi, holding an AK-47, asked, “Instructor Liang, can you tell us about this gun?”
Liang Yu glanced at the AK-47 in Du Heng Zhi’s hands and said, “Sure.”
Taking the AK-47, Liang Yu addressed the group, “The AK has strong recoil. To control it, grip the gun firmly and press down as you pull the trigger.”
“For beginners like you, this is a good choice.”
At that moment, Zhou Da Qiang raised his hand and asked, “Instructor, what gun do you use?”
Liang Yu smiled and walked over to the KM80 sniper rifle. “I prefer sniper rifles, especially this one—the world’s best sniper rifle. It has great range and power.”
Zhang Tie Zhu asked, “Instructor, how far can this sniper shoot?”
Liang Yu looked through the scope at the trees outside and said, “Let’s just say, if I can see it, I can hit it.”
Hearing such a bold statement, the recruits were shocked.
Liang Yu wasn’t exaggerating. With the system’s mastery of all firearms, using this sniper rifle was second nature to him.
“Alright, stop gawking. Pick your weapons, and let’s get moving!” Liang Yu said.
“Yes, Instructor!”
The recruits quickly selected their gear. When they regrouped, Liang Yu noticed they had all chosen AK-47s.
He didn’t say anything, slinging the KM80 over his shoulder and taking the lead. “We’re not driving. We’ll run.”
“It’s 1:30 now. We need to reach Donghai City by 2:30. Can you do it?”
“Yes!”
“Too quiet! I didn’t hear you!”
“YES!” they shouted, their voices loud enough to almost burst their throats.
“Good. Let’s move out!”
With Liang Yu’s command, the nine-person team set off from the shelter, heading toward Donghai City.
From the lookout tower, Dongfang Ke watched them leave and asked Zhang Jian, “Is it really okay for him to take a bunch of rookies out like that?”
“Why don’t you follow them?” Zhang Jian teased.
“I’m not going!” Dongfang Ke retorted, leaving to check on a nearby mine for usable resources.
Meanwhile, on the road, any zombies they encountered were quickly dealt with by Zhang Tie Zhu and the others. Liang Yu didn’t intervene.
His job was to handle any mutated zombies—B-level or higher. He trusted the recruits to take care of the C-level zombies.
In time, these recruits would grow stronger, and Liang Yu could leave without worry.
He had originally planned to leave in a few days, but he had made a promise, and a man’s word is his bond. He didn’t want to leave a bad impression.
Liang Yu was a responsible man. Even in the apocalypse, where such values seemed worthless, staying true to oneself was key to survival.
