Chapter 5: Frenzied Slaughter, Roommate Hong Shan
Liang Yu continued, “You need to have confidence in yourself. I can’t protect you forever!”
“I’ll have to leave eventually, and we’re just classmates.”
“I…” Lai Qingxue was at a loss for words.
Liang Yu patted her shoulder and said, “Alright, Lai Qingxue, get ready. We’re heading out!”
With that, Liang Yu picked up the cleaver and approached the cold storage room door, gripping the handle, ready to open it.
“Are you ready?”
“Yes!”
In the next moment, Liang Yu forcefully turned the handle.
“Clang, clang…” The cold storage room door opened with a sound.
There wasn’t a single zombie outside, leaving Liang Yu puzzled. Where had all the zombies gone!?
Liang Yu led Lai Qingxue out, peering through the serving area to the kitchen beyond.
Like the kitchen, it was devoid of zombies.
The two moved forward, and Liang Yu picked up a large cleaver from a table, handing it to Lai Qingxue behind him.
She looked at his back and slowly accepted the cleaver.
They made their way outside the cafeteria, where not much had changed, except for more zombies.
It seemed that a noise from outside had attracted the cafeteria zombies out.
Liang Yu observed the zombie horde; they hadn’t noticed the two of them.
Suddenly, a roar came from behind, and a zombie lunged at them.
Lai Qingxue, startled, was knocked to the ground by the zombie, but Liang Yu quickly dispatched it with a single stroke.
The blood splattered, staining Lai Qingxue’s white dress red.
Her scream also drew the attention of the zombie horde.
Liang Yu helped Lai Qingxue up and turned to face the zombies.
In an instant, countless zombies surged like a waterfall towards Liang Yu, but he remained calm.
These were all C-level ordinary zombies, which Liang Yu could handle with ease.
He wondered if killing all these zombies would earn him an achievement, given there were surely over a hundred here.
Unfortunately, the system didn’t give him a task.
Lai Qingxue stayed behind Liang Yu, back to back, to avoid a repeat of the earlier sneak attack.
A few obliging zombies emerged from the cafeteria, heading towards Lai Qingxue.
With each scream, she managed to take down a zombie.
Accompanied by her screams, four or five zombies fell by her blade.
Killing zombies could be considered her first achievement in this apocalyptic world!
Lai Qingxue turned to check on Liang Yu, and what she saw shocked her.
Dozens of zombies lay on the ground, and Liang Yu had already moved on, continuing to slaughter zombies not far ahead.
It was a scene of frenzied slaughter, and at this rate, not a single zombie would survive.
Wait, zombies didn’t need to survive!
Lai Qingxue hurried to catch up with Liang Yu. Though she could kill zombies now, only a few at a time. If the numbers increased, she’d likely become a zombie herself.
Reaching Liang Yu’s side, he glanced at her and nodded.
Then the two embarked on a two-hour-long massacre, eliminating the zombie horde and any attracted zombies!
Finally, exhausted, they sat on the ground, not wanting to move.
But they couldn’t rest; though these zombies were gone, those hidden in the shadows could attack at any moment.
After a five-minute break, they stood up, confirmed there were no zombies around, and returned to the security room where Liang Yu had left his backpack.
Locking the door, they finally felt safe to rest.
Liang Yu found a water heater, poured water from the dispenser, and made instant noodles.
One bowl each, which left Lai Qingxue bewildered. Eating instant noodles in the apocalypse, Liang Yu was truly one of a kind.
Liang Yu handed a bowl to Lai Qingxue, saying, “Eat something warm. We haven’t eaten anything yet!”
Lai Qingxue nodded, and they began eating the noodles.
Just then, the security room’s handle started to shake, and Liang Yu gestured for Lai Qingxue to stay quiet.
Liang Yu picked up a baton, and Lai Qingxue grabbed one too, as they slowly approached the door.
Whoever was outside was strong, and soon the door was forced open.
In the next second, a man rushed in, and Liang Yu immediately recognized him—it was his roommate, Hong Shan.
Seeing Liang Yu not reacting, Lai Qingxue raised the baton, swinging it at Hong Shan’s head.
Liang Yu shouted, “No…”
But it was too late; Lai Qingxue’s baton had already struck Hong Shan’s head.
Hong Shan felt dizzy and soon passed out.
Liang Yu closed the door, barricading it with a cabinet, then turned to Lai Qingxue, “Lai Qingxue, what are you doing!?”
“I…” Lai Qingxue dropped the baton, stammering, unable to form a complete sentence.
Liang Yu propped Hong Shan up and tossed him onto a nearby sofa.
Sitting beside him, Liang Yu said, “He’s my roommate, Hong Shan.”
“Ah!” Lai Qingxue exclaimed in surprise.
“Alright, sit down. Luckily, you didn’t hit him too hard; he’s just unconscious, nothing serious!” Liang Yu reassured her.
He patted the chair beside him, and Lai Qingxue finally sat down.
Liang Yu took out his phone and said to Lai Qingxue, “Now that we have some time, send a message to your family to check on them!”
Lai Qingxue took out her phone, looking at Liang Yu, “Aren’t you going to?”
Liang Yu opened his WeChat, pointing at the messages, “I’ve already checked. They’re in an emergency shelter in Kyoto.”
Lai Qingxue nodded and began messaging her parents.
Liang Yu leaned back, continuing to read his novel.

After a while, Hong Shan woke up, rubbing his head, seemingly unaffected by the earlier attack.
Seeing Hong Shan awake, Liang Yu adjusted his chair, facing him.
“Hong Shan, are you okay?” Liang Yu asked with concern.
Hearing the familiar voice and seeing the familiar face, Hong Shan was excited and hugged Liang Yu, “Old Liang, I didn’t expect to find you here!”
“I went to the dorm and didn’t see you. I thought you’d been bitten by those things!”
Liang Yu pushed Hong Shan away, looking disgusted, “Get lost, you’re the one who got bitten!”
Hong Shan held his head, “By the way, Old Liang, how are you here!?”
“When the zombie outbreak happened, you should have been asleep!”
Liang Yu waved the cleaver, smiling, “I was looking for you guys. By the way, I saw Li Liang turned into a zombie.”
“And you’re here, so where’s Catfish now?”
Liang Yu referred to their last roommate, Xu Yu, whom they all called Catfish.
Hearing Xu Yu’s name, Hong Shan’s expression turned grim.
Without Hong Shan saying a word, Liang Yu instantly understood—Xu Yu had likely turned into a zombie like Li Liang.
