Chapter 205: You Attempted Suicide Over a Man

In the VIP hospital room, the smell of disinfectant was faint. Instead, the room was filled with a refreshing scent from the flowers placed by the bedside.

Sunlight streamed through the clean windows, casting a glow on the floor, adding a touch of stifling heat to the already hot summer day.

When Chu Xinran regained consciousness, her head felt heavy, as if filled with lead, making it hard to move.

It felt like she had been dreaming, a dream filled with people and things that made her sad, leaving her emotionally and physically exhausted, unwilling to wake up.

In her daze, she seemed to hear someone speaking softly nearby, but the voice was too faint for her to make out the words.

“Why hasn’t Xinran woken up yet? It’s been a day.”

“Madam, she lost a lot of blood and needs time to recover.”

In her muddled state, Chu Xinran found the voices noisy, preventing her from resting peacefully.

She struggled against the consciousness that bound her, finally managing to open her eyes.

She was greeted by a pure white ceiling, spotless and clean, as if anything spilled on it would instantly mar its perfection.

“Is it that your hospital lacks the skills? Go and fetch Professor Yu for me!”

Chu Xinran recognized the voice as her mother, Chu Xuan’s, feeling a bit disoriented.

Could there be mothers in heaven?

If so, would there be anyone she cared about?

Could her wishes come true here?

Chu Xinran stared motionlessly at the ceiling, as if praying to the divine.

It was the butler who noticed her waking up, quickly alerting the others, “Miss seems to have woken up.”

Chu Xuan swallowed her remaining words, lifting her eyes to look at the bed.

Indeed, Chu Xinran was awake.

“Xinran! You’re finally awake. Tell Mom, is there anywhere you feel uncomfortable?”

Chu Xuan sat on the chair beside the bed, grasping her daughter’s uninjured hand, looking at her with concern.

The warmth from her mother’s hand made Chu Xinran realize this wasn’t heaven.

She wasn’t dead, she was still alive.

Blinking as if regaining her awareness, Chu Xinran turned her head to look at Chu Xuan, speaking softly.

“Mom…”

Her voice was hoarse, like a bellows forced to work, struggling to produce sound.

“Yes, Mom is here. Don’t be afraid, Xinran. Good girl.”

Hearing her daughter speak, Chu Xuan felt a wave of sadness, her eyes instantly moistening.

As long as she’s alive and can call her “Mom” again, that’s a miracle.

“Madam, how about giving Miss some water?”

The butler, quick on his feet, handed over a cup of warm water.

Chu Xuan took the cup, watching the butler help her daughter sit up and then offering her the water.

“Drink slowly, Xinran.”

The parched mouth finally received some moisture, the annoying heat gradually subsiding.

After drinking half a cup, Chu Xinran shook her head, refusing more.

“Hungry? Want to eat something?”

Chu Xuan fussed over her, wanting her to eat, but Chu Xinran shook her head again.

“I’m not hungry.”

Lying back on the bed, Chu Xinran’s eyes were wet, filled with unspoken grievances and sorrow.

Chu Xuan felt her heart ache, motioning for the butler and doctor to leave.

Once they were alone, Chu Xuan finally spoke softly.

“Xinran… the phoenix coronet I bought for you has arrived at home. We can try it on in a few days, okay?”

Her mother’s voice was incredibly gentle, as if handling a fragile treasure, afraid that louder words might shatter her.

She didn’t dare mention the previous night’s events, fearing it would stir her daughter’s emotions.

Chu Xinran’s nose tingled, a tear slowly rolling down, pooling at the corner of her eye and on her nose like a clear spring.

“If you don’t want to try it, we won’t. Don’t cry, Xinran.”

Seeing her cry, Chu Xuan felt as if a knife had twisted in her heart, her own eyes growing wet, gently coaxing her to stop crying.

She picked up a tissue, gently wiping away Chu Xinran’s tears.

At that moment, the noblewoman was just a worried mother.

Though Chu Xinran wasn’t her biological daughter, since bringing her into the Chu family, she had treated her as her own.

Years of upbringing and guidance had bound them together, their bond deeper than some biological mother-daughter relationships.

“Mom, I’m sorry.”

Chu Xinran apologized hoarsely.

She knew her extreme actions had hurt her family, but the despair had nearly drained the life out of her.

In a moment’s thought, she had done something she couldn’t control.

Seeing her mother’s sad face and cautious attitude, Chu Xinran felt deeply guilty.

She blamed herself for being too weak, only knowing how to solve problems this way.

Chu Xuan shook her head, bending down to gently hug her, softly comforting her, “It’s okay. As long as you’re okay, promise me you won’t do this again, okay?”

But the typically obedient daughter didn’t respond, nor did she give the reassurance her mother sought.

Chu Xinran, filled with sorrow, turned her gaze away, unable to make a promise.

She didn’t know if she could avoid such thoughts in the future.

A promise would only bring temporary relief, and if broken, the resulting pain would be even greater.

Chu Xuan, feeling a lump in her throat, her heart sinking, was swept by a wave of anger, burning away her reason.

The fear and anxiety from the previous night, now replaced by utter despair.

She raised her hand, preparing to slap Chu Xinran.

But seeing her daughter’s tightly closed eyes, bracing for the hit, she couldn’t bring herself to do it and slapped the bed instead.

She discarded her loving expression, her gaze turning cold, questioning Chu Xinran:

“I’ve spent so much effort raising you, showing you the world, teaching you dance, even planning to leave you the family estate. And this is how you repay me?”

“Of all things to learn, you chose to attempt suicide over a man?”

Her mother’s disappointed voice and cold attitude plunged Chu Xinran into an icy abyss.
