The Command to Pamper the Husband - Chapter 9
Startled by the ghostly appearance, Wan Xi trembled and looked at Song Jin.
Young Master, didn’t you say that person wouldn’t turn into a ghost?
Reading Wan Xi’s frightened expression, Song Jin quickly intervened to prevent her from saying anything incriminating. “This is Master Shen.”
Wan Xi…
Her eye twitched as she turned to take a closer look at this Master Shen.
And then…
She burst into laughter!
Shen Yue…
Lu Zhan…
Through the mirror, Lu Zhan glanced at Shen Yue. Indeed, it was a bit funny.
Shen Yue…
Wan Xi laughed so hard that her stomach hurt. Clutching her belly, she breathlessly said to Song Jin, “Young Master, aren’t you good at makeup? Why don’t you do it for him? It’s too terrifying.”
Hearing this, Lu Zhan’s eyes lit up and he turned to Song Jin, “Young Master, you can do makeup?”
His eyes were full of hope.
Song Jin raised an eyebrow, recalling how someone had poked her with a stick in the morning. She said indifferently, “Yes, but I’m not a maid. I don’t do makeup for people!”
Shen Yue said, “Time is pressing for the investigation.”
Song Jin pouted, “So pressing that you had to wake people up by poking them with a stick?”
Shen Yue…
Lu Zhan rolled his eyes silently.
To be honest, he didn’t understand why his usually composed lord suddenly decided to poke the young master’s face with a stick this morning.
Was he bored?!
Shen Yue’s face darkened. “You can name your terms.”
Song Jin smiled, “Any terms?”
Shen Yue nodded.
“I don’t have any specific requests right now. Let’s do it this way: write a black-and-white agreement. I’ll do your makeup once, and in return, you must agree to do one thing for me when I ask.”
As Song Jin finished speaking, Wan Xi, who had just been laughing, had already prepared paper, ink, and a seal, and handed them to Shen Yue.
“Just write: ‘I, Shen Yue, willingly agree to do one thing for Song Jin of Yu Prefecture, no matter what it is.’ After you write it, sign and seal it.”
Shen Yue gritted his teeth but still wrote it with a black face.
Wan Xi watched him, making sure he wrote it word for word, signed, and sealed it. She then handed the rice paper to Song Jin with a smile.
Song Jin glanced at it. “Shen Yue? Nice name, but…”
She didn’t finish her sentence and clicked her tongue twice.
Shen Yue’s face darkened. “Do the makeup.”
“Get a basin of hot water and let him wash that ghost face off.”
Wan Xi obeyed and quickly fetched the hot water.
In a moment, Shen Yue’s face was clean again.
Song Jin dabbed rouge and gently applied it to his face.
Turning a man into a woman with makeup was no easy task. “Who did your makeup yesterday?”
As she outlined his brows, Song Jin asked.
For a big figure from the capital here to investigate a case, it was strange that he had decided to cross-dress but didn’t have a proper makeup artist.
Shen Yue… “Your father.”
Song Jin was so startled that she almost drew a line from his brow to his temple.
Her father?
Song Jin couldn’t imagine her elderly father holding an eyebrow pencil, drawing on Shen Yue’s face.
Too horrifying!
After about half an incense stick’s time, the new Young Madam Song was ready.
Looking at the slightly coquettish reflection in the mirror, Shen Yue felt a thousand horses galloping in his heart.
A sissy was indeed a sissy.
What normal man could apply makeup!
With a charming eye makeup, Shen Yue glanced at Song Jin with disdain.
But Song Jin had already started eating breakfast.
Seeing Shen Yue sitting down, Song Jin said, “Eating will smudge your makeup. Think carefully, Master Shen. If you need a touch-up, you’ll have to sign and seal another agreement.”
Shen Yue’s hand, reaching for the chopsticks, stopped as if electrified.
Lu Zhan sympathetically said, “In hindsight, it would have been better to eat first, then apply makeup!”
Shen Yue stood up with a dark face. “Shut up!”
He then strode outside. “I’ll wait for you outside.”
Watching Shen Yue’s retreating back, Song Jin smiled cheerfully. “Remember, you’re my woman.”
Shen Yue…
If he didn’t finish the case, he feared he would be angered to death by this sissy!
How could there be such a sissy and despicable man in the world!
Truly a typical example of a man who wouldn’t forget his mother even after marrying a wife!
After Shen Yue left, Song Jin looked at Lu Zhan while eating her bun. “Do you need makeup?”
Lu Zhan quickly shook his head. “Young Master, no need. I’ll be protecting my lord in the shadows, not showing my face.”
Song Jin nodded, sipping her sour bamboo shoot soup. “By the way, since you’re avoiding pursuit and married into our family, you must have a public backstory, right? Where did you get married from? Do you need to visit your ‘maiden’ home?”
Lu Zhan replied, “These matters have all been arranged by Master Song. There’s no need for a return visit. Young Master need not worry; everything is foolproof.”
Song Jin pouted. That explanation was as good as none.
However, she realized her task was just to provide cover for Shen Yue. She didn’t need to know anything else.
Understanding this, Song Jin swallowed the last bite of her bun and stepped out.
Shen Yue was already seated in the carriage. As soon as Song Jin arrived, the carriage started moving.
Song Jin and Wan Xi each rode a horse, leading the way. They hadn’t left the Song residence for long when they were stopped.
Sun Qiyao, who had a crush on Song Jin, stood in her way with red eyes.
Beside her stood a young man of similar age, with delicate features—Yu Prefecture’s Prefect’s son, Zhao Ke.
Sun Qiyao liked Song Jin, and Zhao Ke liked Sun Qiyao.
Seeing their way blocked, Song Jin dismounted.
Tears streamed down Sun Qiyao’s face as she glanced at the carriage behind Song Jin, then stepped forward, raising her hand to slap Song Jin.
“Song Jin, you heartless man!”
Song Jin tilted her head, dodging the slap.
Zhao Ke stood behind Sun Qiyao, glaring at Song Jin. “Are you even a man? Knowing how Qiyao feels about you, why did you get married?”
Song Jin…
What?
With a huge question mark on her face, she looked at them.
Zhao Ke was not a bad person and usually had no conflicts with Song Jin. However, when it came to Sun Qiyao, Zhao Ke lost his sense.
As long as Sun Qiyao was upset, everyone was Zhao Ke’s enemy.
Looking at the two in front of her, Song Jin took a deep breath. “Brother Zhao, may I have a word with you?”
“What can’t be said in front of me? Why must you step aside?” Sun Qiyao tugged at Song Jin’s sleeve. “Did you really get married?”
One moment she was aggressive, the next she was pitiful.
Song Jin…
She was really bad at dealing with women.
In a flash, she pulled her sleeve away and dragged Zhao Ke aside, quickly saying, “Brother Zhao, I got married for your sake!”
Zhao Ke was stunned.
“Brother Zhao, I know your feelings for Miss Sun. But as long as I remain unmarried, you two can never be together. So…”
Before Song Jin could finish, a shout interrupted her.
Turning, Song Jin saw Sun Qiyao dragging Shen Yue out of the carriage.
Then, a large black dog appeared out of nowhere and pounced on Shen Yue.
Shen Yue instinctively stepped back, his face pale. The dog, with bared teeth, lunged at him, barking ferociously.
Song Jin’s eyes widened. She quickly grabbed a nearby stick and rushed forward. “Get back!”
She swung the stick, managing to drive the dog away. Shen Yue, disheveled and breathing heavily, looked at Song Jin with a mix of gratitude and frustration.
“Are you alright?” Song Jin asked, her voice laced with concern despite her irritation.
Shen Yue brushed himself off, his expression sour. “I’m fine. Just get this over with.”
Sun Qiyao, seeing Shen Yue’s state, stepped back, her face pale. “I… I didn’t mean to cause this…”
Zhao Ke, who had been watching in shock, finally snapped out of it and moved to comfort Sun Qiyao. “Qiyao, let’s leave. This isn’t the time or place.”
Sun Qiyao glanced at Song Jin, tears in her eyes. “Is this really what you want, Song Jin? To marry someone else and leave me behind?”
Song Jin sighed. “Qiyao, it’s not what I wanted, but it’s what had to be done. You deserve someone who can truly make you happy.”
Zhao Ke led Sun Qiyao away, leaving Song Jin and Shen Yue to pick up the pieces of their interrupted journey.
As they resumed their journey, Song Jin couldn’t help but reflect on the chaos that had unfolded. Shen Yue’s presence brought challenges, but it also brought a strange sense of purpose. She was determined to see this through, no matter the obstacles.
“Let’s go,” Song Jin said, mounting her horse again. “We have a case to solve.”
Shen Yue, still looking disgruntled but resolute, followed her lead. The path
ahead was uncertain, but they would face it together.
—
The journey to Huzhou was uneventful for the most part. Song Jin and Shen Yue, despite their initial disagreements, found a rhythm. Song Jin provided cover while Shen Yue investigated discreetly.
Arriving in Huzhou, they were greeted by a bustling town preparing for a local festival. Red lanterns adorned the streets, and the aroma of street food filled the air.
“We should find an inn and settle in,” Shen Yue suggested, his voice now more cooperative.
Song Jin nodded. “Let’s find a quiet place where we can discuss our next steps.”
They found an inn on the outskirts of town, away from the bustling center. The innkeeper, an elderly man with a kind smile, welcomed them warmly.
“Two rooms, please,” Song Jin requested.
The innkeeper nodded and showed them to their rooms. Once settled, they gathered in Song Jin’s room to discuss their plans.
“We need to find the key witness,” Shen Yue began. “He’s supposed to be hiding somewhere in this town. My informant said he frequents a teahouse nearby.”
“Let’s head there in the morning,” Song Jin said. “For now, let’s rest and stay alert.”
—
The next morning, they made their way to the teahouse. It was a quaint place, bustling with locals. Song Jin and Shen Yue sat at a corner table, keeping a low profile.
As they sipped their tea, Song Jin noticed a man in shabby clothes enter the teahouse and glance around nervously. He seemed out of place.
“That’s him,” Shen Yue whispered, recognizing the description from his informant.
They watched as the man took a seat at a secluded table. Shen Yue signaled for Song Jin to stay put and approached the man cautiously.
“Excuse me,” Shen Yue said softly. “I’m here to help. We need to talk.”
The man looked up, fear evident in his eyes. “Who are you?”
“A friend,” Shen Yue replied. “Let’s go somewhere private.”
Reluctantly, the man nodded and followed Shen Yue to a private room in the teahouse. Song Jin joined them, closing the door behind her.
The man, whose name was Liu, began to speak. “I saw something I shouldn’t have. They want me dead.”
“Tell us everything,” Shen Yue urged.
Liu recounted a tale of corruption and conspiracy involving high-ranking officials. His testimony was crucial to Shen Yue’s investigation.
“We need to get you to safety,” Shen Yue said. “You’ll come with us until we can ensure your protection.”
Liu nodded, his eyes filled with gratitude and fear. “Thank you.”
—
With Liu under their protection, Song Jin and Shen Yue faced the challenge of keeping him safe while continuing their investigation. The journey ahead was fraught with danger, but Song Jin’s resolve was stronger than ever.
As they prepared to leave the teahouse, Shen Yue turned to Song Jin. “Thank you for your help. We couldn’t have done this without you.”
Song Jin smiled. “We’re in this together. Let’s bring justice and ensure Liu’s safety.”
The trio set out, determined to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice. The road ahead was uncertain, but with courage and determination, they faced the challenges together.
