Shen Lang suddenly looked up—turns out the girl who had been buying chestnuts was now walking behind him, laughing and chatting as she held a bag of hot chestnuts. She seemed busy texting her roommate.
“Oh shoot, I forgot—I’m on a diet these days! What do I do now? I bought the sweet ones!”
“Wait, you’re not eating them? I can’t just toss them, can I? That’s 20 bucks, after all. Ugh, I’ll just diet next week!”
“Hold on, chat for a sec—there’s this guy who’s been staring at me…”
While Su Lexuan was chatting with her roommate, she suddenly noticed a tall guy checking her out. With a slightly dazed expression, she quickly put her phone away. Those clear, goofy eyes peeked at Shen Lang, then she looked down again. Realizing no one was behind her, Su Lexuan figured it was Shen Lang who had been watching her. She hesitated and tried to step around him.
Noticing that the girl had seen him, Shen Lang started getting nervous. His mind went blank, not knowing what to say to break the ice.
Just then, the system popped up some options!
Romance Assistant
- (Jokingly) “This road is mine, these trees are mine—if you want to pass, hand over your chestnuts! Just kidding—can I add you on WeChat?”
- (Smiling) “Hey, did you also get your chestnuts from that guy? What flavor did you get?”
- (Friendly) “Hey beautiful, you look great. Mind if I add you on WeChat?”
Shen Lang decided on option 2:
“Hey, did you also get your chestnuts from that guy? What flavor did you get?”
Right when the girl was about to pass by, Shen Lang smiled and said, “What flavor did you get?”
He almost went with option 1, which sounded humorous, but then thought it might come off as crude—definitely not the kind of joke to drop when you barely know someone, especially if you’re asking for her contact info.
“Sweet, sweet ones. What about you?” Su Lexuan stopped and gave him a cautious look.
As the campus beauty from Zhuhai University, Su Lexuan was used to endless WeChat requests from guys. In just a few weeks at college, she’d already turned down countless offers—some even joked she must be into girls.
Instinctively, Su Lexuan figured that this bespectacled guy was also trying to get her contact info, and she started figuring out a polite way to decline.
Shen Lang wasn’t surprised; when an unfamiliar guy approaches a girl, she’s always a bit guarded.
Then the system popped up more options!
Romance Assistant
- (Deeply) “You’re eating all that sweet stuff—careful, you might get cavities. And don’t you care about your figure?”
- (Laughing) “That boss didn’t hear me right—I asked for sweet and salty, but he ended up giving me plain ones. I actually like the sweet ones. How about I trade you the salty ones for your plain ones?”
- (Friendly) “Hey, miss, you shouldn’t be playing on your phone while walking!”
Shen Lang rejected option 1—definitely not that kind of guy—and went with option 2. He said with a smile, “That boss didn’t hear me right—I said I wanted sweet and salty, but he packed me plain ones instead. I like the sweet ones, so how about I trade you the salty ones for your plain ones?”
“Oh, really…” Su Lexuan relaxed a bit. She’d been expecting another guy trying to get her WeChat, so she smiled and nodded, “Sure, that works. I’m actually trying to diet these days.”
Shen Lang handed her the two bags of chestnuts. “So, do you want the salty or the plain ones?”
“Just the salty ones, please. The plain ones don’t taste as good.”
After a moment of thought, Su Lexuan grabbed the bag of salty chestnuts and handed the bag of sweet chestnuts back to Shen Lang. “Here, take your sweet ones.”
“Thanks,” Shen Lang said, relieved as he took the bag.
He couldn’t believe he’d managed to strike up a conversation with such an easygoing girl—and all over chestnuts!
They both walked on in silence for a bit, keeping a good distance. That’s when Shen Lang noticed her school uniform—she was from Zhuhai University. Having graduated from Zhuhai University just six months ago himself, he realized they were essentially alumni.
Then the system threw up another set of options:
Romance Assistant
- (Surprised) “Oh? You’re from Zhuhai University too? I just graduated this past semester—we’re alumni!”
- (Smirking) “With that uniform, you must be from Zhuhai University, right? I’ve heard the girls there are something else—mind introducing me to a few?”
- (Raising an eyebrow) “Hey beautiful, let me ask you something: What’s your WeChat ID?”
Shen Lang nearly choked when he saw options 2 and 3. If he really asked like that, she’d probably call the cops for harassment!
So he feigned surprise: “Oh, really? I just noticed—you’re from Zhuhai University too?”
Su Lexuan turned her head, pleasantly surprised. “Oh? You are?”
Shen Lang grinned broadly. “Yeah, I just graduated this past semester. Who knew we’d run into a fellow alum out here?”
“Wow, I never expected to meet an alum outside campus,” Su Lexuan said with a sweet smile.
Her smile made Shen Lang’s heart race—he wished he could just get married right then and there!
Then the system popped up another set of options:
Romance Assistant
- (Casually) Start eating the chestnuts and mention how the flavor seems off, so she can try some—use that as a chance for some friendly physical interaction to break the ice.
- (Seriously) Scold her, “Aren’t you going to call me ‘senior’? Show a little respect!”
- (Pull her into a gentle hug) and jokingly warn her to watch out for oncoming traffic.
Shen Lang went with option 1. “Haha, I didn’t expect this either,” he laughed as he unwrapped the bag of sweet chestnuts and started eating. After a few bites, he frowned and said, “Ugh, don’t you think these chestnuts taste a bit off—as if they’re spoiled?”
“Really? Are they?” Su Lexuan asked, a bit surprised.
Shen Lang passed her the bag. “Try one.”
Without thinking too much, Su Lexuan stepped closer, grabbed one chestnut, and tasted it. After a moment, she laughed, “They taste fine to me—it might have just been that one bad one you ate.”
“Yeah, could be,” Shen Lang agreed, nodding thoughtfully.
“You’re not too bad,” Su Lexuan teased with a laugh. “You know, last time I bought a bag at Wanda Plaza, half of them were bad—I was so mad!”
Shen Lang laughed along. “Haha, you’re unlucky. Didn’t you try to get a refund from the boss?”
“The boss was all talk—I didn’t dare argue,” she replied.
“Haha, guess there’s nothing we can do about it.”
It was such a small, mundane conversation, but somehow it made the atmosphere between them feel unexpectedly warm.
All the while, Shen Lang chatted with Su Lexuan following the system’s suggestions—topics that she seemed interested in or could relate to.
Before long, in just a few minutes, the two went from strangers to friends who could chat comfortably.
Su Lexuan was surprised at how easily she’d started talking with a guy she’d just met. They chatted about trivial stuff, yet somehow, Su Lexuan found herself enjoying the vibe.
This guy just knew how to steer the conversation to things he was interested in.
