- Chapter 15 - Another Assassination Attempt
Han Feng handed over the spirit stones, and the shop attendant gave him the Windborne Sword and the formation materials, along with instructions on how to set up the formation. Since it was a simple formation, there was no need for a specialized formation master to install it.
After pocketing his new treasures, Han Feng left the Treasures Pavilion and headed straight for Spirit Beast Peak.
He had already planned his next steps: first, register the little fox’s identity, officially making it his private property and ensuring its protection. Then tomorrow, he’d send the fox to deliver the sword to Jiang Surou.
After all, this Windborne Sword was currently a low-grade treasure that anyone could use. But if he gifted it to Jiang Surou, he would get a mid-grade treasure in return—one that only he could use. This way, he’d not only gain a better weapon, but no one else would be able to wield it even if they tried.
Wouldn’t that be great?
Knowing the way to Spirit Beast Peak, Han Feng walked briskly, nearly running as he made his way there.
*Sigh,* if only I knew sword flight. I could fly there in no time and save myself all this effort, he thought.
By the middle of the night, he arrived at Spirit Beast Peak, climbed to the top, and found the registration office.
In the world of cultivation, places rarely closed at night. The registration office was brightly lit by various lighting formations and luminous night pearls, making it seem even brighter than daytime inside.
“Senior Brother, I’m here to register my spirit beast,” Han Feng said as he approached the counter. While speaking, he untied the bundle on his back and pulled out the little fox.
The disciple sitting behind the counter, who had been meditating with his eyes closed, opened them slowly and glanced at Han Feng before saying indifferently,
“Which senior brother’s spirit beast are you registering? Why didn’t he come with you to handle the paperwork?”
“It’s not someone else’s. I found it and took pity on it, so I decided to adopt it.”
“Adopted it? Well, that works too. As long as it’s registered according to the rules. Have you done a bloodline test on it?”
“No, not yet.”
“Alright then. What species and cultivation level is your spirit beast?”
“It’s a fox, and it doesn’t have any cultivation.”
Hearing this, the disciple looked at the little fox with a puzzled expression and said,
“A fox without cultivation? That’s just a wild animal, not a spirit beast. Are you messing with me?”
“You’re the wild animal! Ptooey ptooey ptooey!” The little fox bared its teeth and made faces at the disciple, trying to show off its fierceness.
“Oh? It can talk? Its intelligence developed early. It looks like a Jade Spirit Fox… probably is one. Alright, let’s register it.”
The disciple nodded and continued,
“Owner’s name, status, and cultivation level?”
“Han Feng, servant disciple of Luoxia Peak. No cultivation.”
“No cultivation? Heh, a wild man paired with a wild beast, huh?” The disciple snickered. It wasn’t every day he saw such a weird combination.
“Alright, registration complete. This Jade Spirit Fox is now officially yours. Whether you sign a master-servant contract or a life-death contract is up to you. Just put this collar on its neck, mark it with your soul imprint, and only you will be able to remove it.”
The disciple handed Han Feng a thin collar.
Taking the collar, Han Feng placed it around the little fox’s neck, causing the fox to pout in displeasure.
Fortunately, Han Feng hadn’t forced it into any contracts, leaving the fox completely free and unrestricted. Otherwise, it would have scratched him already.
Once everything was done, Han Feng walked out of the registration office.
The collar was merely an identification tag and didn’t impose any restrictions.
As soon as Han Feng left, the disciple leaned back in his chair with his legs crossed. He pulled out a communication jade slip and lazily said,
“Second Brother, that servant disciple who humiliated you recently—Han Feng—just came by to register his spirit beast. He’s heading down the mountain now.
He’s got his face covered with a black cloth and is wearing a hat. He’s carrying a Jade Spirit Fox.
You don’t need to take care of this yourself. Just send someone to finish him off. It’s beneath you to dirty your hands with trash like him. You’re our family’s golden boy after all—don’t get your hands messy.”
After saying that, he put away the jade slip and resumed his meditation. There was no way he would bother killing some low-level servant disciple himself.
After all, he was from the prestigious Ye family.
Carrying the little fox, Han Feng descended the mountain under the cover of night.
As he neared the foot of the mountain, Han Feng asked,
“Little Fox, are you really a Jade Spirit Fox?”
“Nope.”
“Then what kind of spirit beast are you?”
“I… I don’t remember. I can’t recall anything.”
The little fox’s face was serious and filled with confusion as it earnestly replied,
“I don’t know who I am or what species I belong to. I don’t even know where I came from. But I do know that I can eat spirit stones, and when I do, I feel full. If I don’t eat, I get really hungry.
But I have a feeling I’m not a Jade Spirit Fox. I’ve seen those before, and their bloodline is far too weak compared to mine. My bloodline is much more powerful.”
“Oh? So your bloodline must be worth a lot then?”
“Why use ‘worth a lot’ to describe it instead of ‘noble’? What are you planning?”
“Nothing much. I won’t sell you.”
“Wait, are you planning to keep me and sell my blood instead?”
“Is your blood valuable?”
“Nope! Nope! Not at all! I’m just a regular old beast!” The little fox quickly turned its head away, clearly nervous.
“And how many spirit stones do we still have left? You spent three thousand in one go, you big spender.”
“Probably a hundred or so.”
“How do you expect to raise me when you’re so broke?”
“When did I ever say I was going to raise you? Whether you starve or not has nothing to do with me.”
“You ungrateful jerk! Earlier today, you called me your best friend, and now—”
Suddenly, the little fox’s expression changed drastically. “Hide! There’s malice nearby!”
Without hesitation, Han Feng immediately dodged to the side as a flying sword whizzed past the spot where he had just been walking.
Cold sweat dripped down Han Feng’s back as he realized how close he had come to death. The little fox’s ability to sense malice had proven invaluable once again.
Two shadowy figures emerged from the bushes, each wielding a sword as they charged toward Han Feng.
“Little Fox! Go get help from the Enforcement Hall!” Han Feng shouted, his voice tense as he drew his Windborne Sword and slashed at the nearest attacker.
He had no idea how strong his opponents were, but on a dark and windy night like this, with no one else around, facing two enemies skilled in sword flight, escape seemed impossible.
The little fox leapt off Han Feng’s shoulder and darted away into the distance in a flash.
Its speed was impressive—within moments, it had reached a large boulder far away.
However, instead of continuing to seek help, the fox stopped on top of the rock and watched wide-eyed as Han Feng faced his attackers.
Han Feng swung his sword at the closest assassin. The man clearly didn’t consider Han Feng a threat. He didn’t even try to dodge, allowing Han Feng’s sword to strike him as he prepared to land his own blow.
But in the next moment, shock filled the assassin’s eyes.
Han Feng sidestepped the assassin’s attack and plunged his Windborne Sword effortlessly into the man’s chest.
“You… how could you break through my defense…”
