- Chapter 17 - A Series of Interesting Misunderstandings
The disciple from the Luoxia Peak Enforcement Hall thought for a moment and then said,
“Well, no. Earlier today, we got a report from the Outer Disciple Residence that Wang Mian and his Dao partner, Zhang Xiu, moved into the outer disciple housing. So now, Han Feng is living alone in that house.”
“What’s Han Feng’s cultivation level?”
“Cultivation? Ha! He has none to speak of. He’s known far and wide as the peak’s biggest failure. He’s been in the sect for five years and still hasn’t cultivated even a trace of spiritual energy. He’s the number one waste on Luoxia Peak. He was supposed to be kicked out of the sect next month. But somehow, he got lucky and became your sister’s Dao partner.
If your Jiang family pulls some strings, he won’t be expelled for sure.”
Jiang Huayang pondered this for a moment, then nodded.
“Alright. Does this Han Feng have a white spirit fox with him?”
“How would I know? I don’t go around paying attention to some servant disciple.”
“Fair enough. Thanks, Senior Brother. I’ll be on my way.”
“Take care.”
Jiang Huayang and his sharp-faced junior flew off from Luoxia Peak, heading straight toward Spirit Beast Peak.
The sharp-faced disciple asked,
“Senior Brother, that guy is supposed to be a useless waste who can’t cultivate? That’s ridiculous! The way he killed that Qi Refining fifth-layer cultivator earlier was so efficient—he’s got to be at least at the seventh or eighth layer, right?
At his age, being at the seventh or eighth layer would make him a top-tier talent.”
“I agree. Something about this doesn’t add up. That kid has piqued my interest. Let’s ask around at Spirit Beast Peak to confirm.”
Jiang Huayang, expression unchanging, walked into the registration office at Spirit Beast Peak.
Inside, the same Ye family disciple who had registered Han Feng earlier was sitting at the counter.
“Oh, Senior Brothers from the Enforcement Hall! What can I help you with?” The Ye family disciple quickly stood up and greeted them.
Jiang Huayang asked, “Have you registered a disciple with a white fox recently?”
Jiang Huayang had seen Han Feng being ambushed at the base of Spirit Beast Peak earlier. An outer peak disciple coming to Spirit Beast Peak must have been there to register a spirit beast or make a purchase—there was no other reason.
The Ye family disciple’s heart skipped a beat, but he quickly responded,
“Yes, actually. About half an hour ago, a disciple came by to register a Jade Spirit Fox.”
“Oh? What was his name?”
“Let me check.” The Ye family disciple pretended to scan the logbook, then said,
“His name was Han Feng.”
“Oh, Han Feng, is it?”
Jiang Huayang nodded calmly, showing no hint of surprise. As he turned to leave, he suddenly stopped and asked,
“What’s your name?”
The Ye family disciple froze and replied,
“My name is Ye Longquan.”
“You’re from the Ye family?”
“Yes.”
“Alright. Got it.”
Jiang Huayang then walked out of the registration office.
Now it was confirmed—the disciple who killed the assassins earlier was Han Feng.
He had joined the sect five years ago at the age of eighteen. Even though he had only ever been a servant disciple, he was clearly at the seventh or eighth layer of the Qi Refining Stage. Judging by his speed and the way he controlled his spiritual energy in combat, he probably had at least a high-grade spirit root, or maybe even an earth-grade one.
But why hadn’t he become an outer disciple?
Why was a disciple who only seemed to grow medicinal herbs so adept at killing people?
And where did he get that powerful sword?
This kid has some serious secrets.
It seems my sister didn’t choose him out of spite after all—she has a keen eye for talent.
Things are getting interesting. Since Surou seems to know him better than I do, I won’t intervene for now. I’ll just observe him for a while. If he proves worthy, I might help nurture him into a valuable asset for the family.
Jiang Huayang instructed his junior not to mention this to anyone, and then they returned to the Enforcement Hall.
After they left, Ye Longquan, the disciple at Spirit Beast Peak, began to panic.
Jiang Huayang might not know him, but Ye Longquan knew exactly who Jiang Huayang was—the famous prodigy of the Enforcement Hall. There was no way he wouldn’t recognize him.
Just earlier, he had informed Ye Longyuan about Han Feng, which led to the assassination attempt. And now, Jiang Huayang arrived right after, asking about Han Feng and whether he was from the Ye family.
Great, he’s onto me.
Ye Longquan quickly called over a junior disciple to take his place at the counter. Then he used sword flight to rush toward Luoxia Peak.
When he arrived at Ye Longyuan’s residence, he barged in, quickly finding his brother.
“Second Brother, did you send someone to assassinate Han Feng?”
“Of course I did. Why, what’s going on?” Ye Longyuan frowned.
“Something’s wrong. Try contacting the people you sent. See if you can reach them.”
Immediately, Ye Longyuan pulled out his communication jade slip and called several times. But there was no response.
His expression darkened as he turned to Ye Longquan and said,
“What happened? Tell me.”
“Well, after I told you about Han Feng earlier, it wasn’t long before Jiang Huayang came to see me.”
“Jiang Huayang? My sister’s brother? What did he want?”
“He came asking if I knew who registered a fox earlier. I told him it was Han Feng. Then he asked what my name was. I told him my name and that I’m from the Ye family. Then he left.”
Ye Longyuan furrowed his brow and quickly said,
“Jiang Huayang must have figured something out. He’s onto you. Most likely, the assassins I sent were killed by Jiang Huayang. The mission failed.
But since he has no concrete proof that I was behind it, he went to Spirit Beast Peak to subtly warn you. He’s telling us to back off.”
“You’re probably right. I’d bet the Jiang family is protecting Han Feng now. Otherwise, why would Jiang Huayang show up so quickly? Han Feng’s probably already been saved.
Brother, we need to be more careful from now on. That guy’s got the Jiang family behind him now.”
Ye Longyuan scoffed, “Hmph, so what if he has the Jiang family on his side? The Ye family isn’t afraid of them. But if they think I’ll let this go, they’ve got another thing coming. If I can’t take him down openly, I’ll do it in the shadows. If they can’t find any evidence, what can they do to me?
Still, the Jiang family is a nuisance, and I don’t want to damage my image in Jiang Surou’s eyes any further.
Let that brat Han Feng enjoy his life for a few more days.”
Little did Han Feng know, due to the events of the previous night, several amusing misunderstandings had arisen in the minds of a few key people.
By the time dawn broke, Han Feng had finally finished meditating, fully restoring his spiritual energy and strength.
The little fox, sitting nearby, was contentedly rubbing its belly, clearly full.
Han Feng asked curiously,
“How many spirit stones did you eat?”
“Not… not that many,” the little fox replied, looking away guiltily.
“It’s fine. Eat as many as you want. You helped me in the fight, so it’s only right that I feed you spirit stones. After all, you can’t ask a horse to run without feeding it grass, right?”
Han Feng paused and then asked,
“Your speed was pretty incredible last night. Even though you don’t have any cultivation, how did you manage to move so fast? You were even faster than me.”
“Must be a natural talent, I guess.”
“And when you looked at that guy and he collapsed to the ground, what was that about?”
“I don’t know. Another natural talent, maybe.”
