- Chapter 141 - Looking Down on Ciel (1/2)
The following time, Ciel visited Avena’s clinic and Amy’s home.
Adele was indeed not at home but was staying in Avena’s clinic laboratory. Amy also happened not to be visiting friends, so Ciel’s trip was not in vain.
Both were surprised when they learned they could freely find Ciel later. However, Adele was still a little worried and insisted on giving Ciel a full checkup. Only after confirming there were no major issues did she let Ciel leave the laboratory.
What surprised Ciel a little was that not only she, but Amy also received an invitation to Avena’s banquet—although saying it like that wasn’t quite right.
The invitation was sent to Baron Hastings, and the Baron would simply bring Amy along.
However, Baron Hastings was quite happy about this and felt that it was due to his daughter Amy knowing Avena. When Ciel visited, he even arranged many desserts she had never seen before, but Ciel was simply too full to eat much.
After all, in the past, Baron Hastings, a new minor noble who was marginal and had no land, basically had no opportunity to participate in banquets hosted by the Roswell family. The two were not on the same social stratum.
By the time she left Amy’s home and walked towards Avena’s manor, it was already one o’clock in the afternoon. At this point, Ciel remembered something.
Avena… didn’t she say she was going to take her shopping for clothes?
She had said she had nothing much planned for today and could spend some time with her. How come she just found an excuse and left in a hurry after going to the church?
Had something happened?
Thinking of this, Ciel quickened her pace slightly.
Avena’s home was not far from Amy’s. After walking quickly for less than ten minutes, Ciel arrived at the entrance of Avena’s manor.
At this moment, Ciel could already see many expensive carriages parked inside the manor. The servants in the manor were orderly guiding the coachmen to let the nobles and wealthy merchants disembark at the mansion entrance, and then leading the carriages to the stables.
This scene, for some reason, reminded Ciel of the scenes when presidents of some European countries hosted banquets in her previous life, where luxury cars would take turns driving into the garden, circling around, and dropping off people.
Although there were only carriages here, the spectacle was no less grand than the scenes on television.
Ciel, who had only seen such scenes in videos before, couldn’t help but find this sight in reality a little novel.
“Miss Ciel? You’ve arrived?”
A maid waiting at the entrance had already noticed Ciel walking alone from a distance. After Ciel reached the entrance, she quickly went up to greet her, “Young Mistress Avena is busy. I will take you inside first.”
“Okay.”
Ciel nodded and followed behind the maid. However, she didn’t take the main path where many people were. Instead, she circled through the garden, preparing to enter the mansion from the back garden.
This scene was coincidentally seen by someone in a carriage.
“Father, who is that?”
The young girl craning her neck in the carriage pointed at the simply dressed girl walking into the distance, turned back, and asked curiously, “How come she doesn’t need an invitation?”
“I don’t know, probably a maid who hasn’t changed yet.”
The blonde man just glanced at the red-haired figure’s back and lost all interest. This wasn’t any noble he knew, and he didn’t remember anyone’s daughter having red hair.
“She’s not a maid. Didn’t you see that the maid was very respectful to her? Her status must be not low, and she’s very familiar with Avena, I bet you.”
The girl seemed a little unconvinced and grumbled.
“If you have time to think about this, you’d better think about saying a few more words to Young Mistress Avena later,”
The man raised his hand and rubbed his brow, saying, “Sit properly, posture!”
“Hmph.”
The girl obediently sat properly, a little defiant, but couldn’t help but mutter, “I told you, building a relationship with Avena is useless. She’s not the kind of person who can be flattered…”
“Then your next week’s allowance also…”
“No!!!”
“Silence!”
Meanwhile, Ciel, who was walking towards the back garden, turned back to look in the direction of a certain carriage. She blinked her eyes, a little confused.
What was that noise? An air raid siren?
However, after confirming it wasn’t a commotion, Ciel didn’t pay much attention. She entered Avena’s manor from the back garden, walked to the study on the second floor, and walked directly inside.
Judging by Avena’s appearance, she wouldn’t be free so quickly. Might as well take this time to read a book—there were no other forms of entertainment here after all.
As for the maid who led Ciel, after closing the study door, she quietly snuck to Avena’s side and whispered that Miss Ciel had arrived.
Avena glanced at the time displayed on her pocket watch. The important guest had arrived early, so after temporarily handing over everything to the butler, she walked towards the study.
Gently opening the study door, Avena saw Ciel standing by the bookshelf, holding a book and reading. She seemed not to have noticed the sound of the door opening and was still concentrating on the book in her hands.
Avena quietly closed the door, stepping on the soft carpet, deliberately maintaining a noiseless state, and approaching Ciel.
What she didn’t know was that Ciel’s attention had already returned from the book from the moment she opened the door. She was just pretending to turn the pages and read, without turning around.
3 meters… 1 meter…
When Avena’s footsteps were almost right behind her, Ciel turned back directly and asked, “Avena? When did you get here?”
Avena, who had just raised her hand, lowered it without leaving a trace. Her gaze shifted directly to the book in Ciel’s hands, and she nodded, “So you understand Pharos language?”
Although Avena tried her best to act as if nothing had happened, the way she changed the subject was still a little clumsy, like a kitten caught about to play a prank, pretending to busy itself with grooming and washing its face as if nothing happened.
Ciel suppressed a smile and asked, “I just remembered something, didn’t you say you were going to take me to buy clothes? Why did you leave early?”
“A guest arrived early, Nia went to pick them up.”
Avena shook her head and said, “I’ll make it up to you next time.”
“If you don’t mind, for the banquet, just wear my old clothes for now… Although they are old clothes, they have basically only been worn once or twice.”
An outfit only worn once or twice…
Avena’s extravagance had exceeded Ciel’s expectations. She even felt she didn’t need to buy clothes anymore. She could just wear the clothes Avena didn’t want.
Anyway, she did not mind wearing Avena’s clothes, but Avena herself might mind a little.
“I have no objection.”
Ciel seemed to remember something and asked further, “A very important guest?”
Even the Prince’s son visited Avena when he came to Berren City; Avena didn’t have to visit him personally… Does the person who came have very high status?
After taking a deep breath, Avena slowly said, “It’s someone from the family. They came directly without notice. They likely have some important information… Originally, this was just an ordinary banquet for me to exchange information regularly.”
Ciel nodded and couldn’t help but feel a little envious of Avena’s network.
Avena just doesn’t like and won’t actively strike up conversations with people, nor does she like to socialize too deeply. But this doesn’t mean her emotional intelligence is low.
Her attitude towards Hastings shows that even just a relative of Ciel’s friend will be given ample respect and courtesy, and she won’t give them a cold shoulder.
“Exchanging information, huh…”
After thinking for a moment, Ciel asked, “Are all those who came transcendents?”
“No, almost no transcendents.” Avena shook her head. “Just business.”
“Business…”
Ciel nodded and instantly felt a sense of something very high-end. Ciel was almost completely ignorant about any business but did indeed want to understand a little.
After all, judging by Avena’s food, clothing, and expenses, making money from business is much faster than Ciel robbing people, and it’s also safe. Suddenly, Ciel realized something and asked, “Your money… is it all earned by yourself?”
After hearing Ciel’s words, Avena asked back, a little confused, “Otherwise?”
Ah? It wasn’t given by the family?
