- Chapter 68 - Ciel, the Little Cult Leader (2/3)
Ciel checked the items in her possession but didn’t rush to leave the room. Instead, she began making preparations.
She retrieved the 【Radiance Bishop’s Handwritten Letter】 and the 【Deadly Blood Laurel】 from her inventory, placing them on the table alongside the Redemption Society mask that Avena had bought for her.
She brought over a candle and a sewing knife, carefully stripping away the fragile outer shell of the mask to reveal the soft white fabric underneath.
Bit by bit, she dripped red wax onto the mask, letting it flow along its contours like the bleeding face of a faceless specter.
She sealed the left eye area with paper, securing it from the inside with a thumbtack. Taking a deep breath, she reached into her inventory and retrieved the 【Other Side Page】.
The moment the page appeared, the 【Sacrificial Saint’s Relic】 on her chest ignited violently, its purple flames surging as if trying to break free from its cage.
Ciel immediately shut her eyes, relying on touch alone to press the page against the left side of the mask, fastening it in place with a paperclip and sealing it with wax.
Only after she had secured the mask inside her handbag did the buzzing in her head begin to fade.
“…Whew.”
Ciel let out a long breath.
Her plan for approaching Kitty was clear—she would disguise herself as one of the cult’s high-ranking messengers.
She was betting that the actual cult courier had not yet arrived with an update about Sherlon’s failure.
She was also betting that her disguise would be convincing enough to fool Kitty—a cultist herself.
If she was going to gamble, she might as well make it a big one.
Ciel lifted her gaze to the dressing mirror on the table. Staring back at her was a girl with soft gray-blue hair—but her lips curled in a smile she had never seen on herself before.
It was the exhilarated anticipation of a gambler, drawing a breath just before the final reveal.
She picked up the Deadly Blood Laurel and fastened it to the left side of her gun belt. Her face lost all color as she packed up the rest of her belongings and headed downstairs.
…
A carriage swayed as it made its way toward the outskirts of the city, stopping at the base of Creek Hill. The driver hesitated before turning back and asking cautiously,
“Miss, the road ahead is quite rough…”
“This is fine.”
Ciel, looking unnaturally pale, stepped off the carriage. With a casual flick of her wrist, she tossed a one-gold-pound coin into the air. It arced in a golden curve before landing upright on the wooden bench beside the driver.
The coin stood on its edge, perfectly balanced—until the horse snorted and shifted, causing it to topple.
The queen’s portrait faced the sky.
“Thank you, Miss! Thank you so much!”
The coachman picked up the gold pound, his face lighting up as he bit it to test its authenticity.
As Ciel walked up the mountain, she reached into her pocket, pulled out a piece of candy, and popped it into her mouth, crunching it up and swallowing it down.
She saw the path leading to Deton Manor. Stepping onto it, Ciel grabbed another handful of candy and stuffed it into her mouth. Then, she took out the modified mask from her handbag and placed it directly over her face.
With the mask in place, her vision was partially obscured, preventing her from seeing the 【Other Side Page】. Its influence was now reduced to just a faint buzzing in her head.
Ciel was dressed in a blue-and-white outfit originally belonging to Avena. A gun holster rested on her waist, with two seemingly intricate pistols hanging at her sides.
To any onlooker, she would have appeared like a noble lady out on a hunting trip—if not for the eerie mask covering her face.
She continued up the mountain path and soon reached Deton Manor at the midway point.
Two attendants in green chip masks spotted her approaching from a distance and quickly stepped forward to greet her.
However, the moment they got a clear look at her mask, their entire bodies trembled. They hastily removed their own masks, shut their eyes tightly, and lowered their heads.
Beads of sweat rolled down their temples as terrifying murmurs echoed in their minds with each step she took closer.
Tap.
The footsteps halted just before them. The attendants held their breath, not daring to make a sound—until the eerie figure before them spoke in a pleasant voice.
“What should you call me?”
The voice was soft, even carrying a hint of amusement, as if it were a divine blessing from the Mother Goddess herself.
“Your… Your Excellency, Bishop.”
“Your Excellency, Bishop!”
Just as Ciel had anticipated, Kitty had been operating in Deton Manor for quite some time—long enough to convert most of its members into cultists.
A faint smirk curled beneath Ciel’s mask.
“The Mother Goddess watches over you.”
“Praise be to the Bishop!”
“Thank you, Your Excellency! Thank you!”
The moment those words left Ciel’s lips, the two attendants, as if receiving the greatest blessing of their lives, immediately dropped to their knees.
They bowed their heads repeatedly, striking the ground so hard that blood began to trickle from their foreheads, yet they showed no signs of stopping.
Ciel wondered—if the 【Other Side Page】 drove people mad by simply being looked at, would this count as completing the “Blood Painter” Reconstitution Ritual?
After all, the page was something she had written herself…
Mulling over this thought, she stepped forward and pushed open the door to Deton Manor.
She turned left, making her way directly to the reception hall.
Ciel had only been here once before, using the “newcomer’s route,” so she took the same path again.
The sound of the door opening caused the man sitting among a pile of chips to frown.
“How much do you want to exchange? Just get it done and move along.”
He pulled the cigar from his mouth and continued reading his book, speaking absentmindedly.
“Me?”
Ciel chuckled. “I’m not here to exchange chips.”
“If you’re not exchanging—”
The man grumbled as he lazily lifted his gaze toward Ciel.
The moment he saw her mask, his legs gave out beneath him, and he slid off his chair.
But it was too late—he had already seen it.
His expression morphed from terror to sheer madness. His wide eyes turned bloodshot, veins twisting under the whites.
To any observer, she was merely a masked girl.
But to him, she was something beyond comprehension—something utterly terrifying, indescribable.
“May the Mother Goddess bless you.”
Ciel casually plucked a few chips from the table as she walked past him.
It wasn’t until she exited the room that the man let out a guttural wail.
He screamed as he threw his cigar away, clawing at his own eyes with both hands. Then, grabbing a knife, he stabbed at his eardrums and shoved the burning cigar into his nasal cavity.
Only when his world faded into black, silent nothingness did he finally collapse to the ground.
Muttering “Mother Goddess watches over us,” he lay there, letting his blood slowly drain away.
Ciel entered the next room.
A glass wall separated the space, and a poker table stood at the center. A suited corpse sat at the table—it was the same body from before.
“…You.”
The maid in the red chip mask stepped forward to greet her but quickly lowered her head, removed her mask, and whispered, “Greetings, Your Excellency, Bishop.”
“Where is Kitty?”
Ciel asked.
“The Administrator is in her third-floor office. Allow me to escort you.”
Keeping her head lowered, the maid led Ciel toward a side corridor rather than through the main gambling area.
This passage allowed them to bypass the casino floor, avoiding unnecessary exposure.
After all, Deton Manor wasn’t exclusively a cult gathering—many ordinary members and transcendents frequented it for gambling and exchanges.
Ciel followed her guide up to the third floor, stopping before a wooden door.
Knock, knock, knock—
The maid rapped on the door.
“What is it?”
Kitty’s voice came from within, tinged with irritation—she seemed troubled by something.
