Chapter 340: Turn of the Other Side of the Stage
—
Will cautiously followed Reibel. Reibel led him out of Dustbone Corridor—through a “back door” that the Adventurer’s Guild would surely never find. Then, they arrived at a nearby dungeon, “Dream Summer.” Here, Will realized Reibel wasn’t lying. The “at-risk dungeons” listed by the Adventurer’s Guild were indeed their “bases.”
“At the end of this corridor, you will see Ms. Reviki. Of course, as you may have noticed, our base is also an interlayer built inside a dungeon.”
He suddenly stopped, his hands behind his back, looking at Will as if he were a “guest,” and gestured towards the door.
Will scanned the area with his demonic left eye. There were no traces of mental magic on or behind the door. Furthermore, there were no signs of magic casting on the floor near the entrance. It proved there were no traps. Of course, if he wanted to harm him, he wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of bringing him here.
The names “Galaxy Summit” and “Reviki” he had mentioned were indeed not a “trap” to lure him to his death.
“Don’t worry. It’s no trick. Ms. Reviki is very interested in you. She has been looking forward to meeting you.”
Reibel spoke as if he had seen through Will’s cautious thoughts.
“…She’s here?”
“Yes. Open the door and you’ll see her. But the exit is not here. I have to report back to your father now. The next time we meet, perhaps we’ll be enemies on opposite sides of a dungeon.”
Will wondered if that meant he, a now-dead man, had been pushed to the dungeon’s side.
He nodded and turned to open the door.
When he was born into this world, he had imagined if he would ever have the chance to see the golden-haired, blue-eyed beauty described in the original story—
The empress of the “Galaxy Summit” dungeon, born in Novis Town, Reviki.
While the various species in the dungeon had races that fit a “Western fantasy” background, Reviki was an exception. In all descriptions, she was more like a “human.” When she appeared, she had a beauty that made it impossible to look away—her shining golden hair fell like a waterfall behind her, with a few strands occasionally falling by her ear. She was tall, wearing a pair of black high heels, and her military-style uniform added a touch of heroic and cool.
But these were not the main points.
The feeling she gave was that of a strong leader, who, while being “gentle” to her own people, could manage all her subordinates and handle all relationships perfectly. She made you feel she was “approachable,” yet you were completely convinced by her.
Finally, she had what was possibly the greatest “mystique” in the whole book. The secrets she held were no less than Shu’s. In the parts Will had read, he had never even seen her “monster” form. So her abilities were also something Will was curious about. If a dungeon’s name could “guess” the inclination and type of its monsters, then what was “Galaxy Summit”? Did it symbolize the galaxy? Could she manipulate stars?
As he thought, he pushed open the door and smelled the aroma of alcohol from inside.
“This is…”
A strong aroma of alcohol, with a hint of minty freshness. The moment he entered the room, it was as if he had already drunk it, the scent filling his nostrils.
Chaos Alpha.
Even if Will forgot everything else, he wouldn’t forget this drink, the one Reviki loved so much in the original story.
“My, my. I’ve heard so much about you. Perhaps we should have met sooner.”
He heard her voice before he saw her.
This “interlayer” was very different from the first one Leah had taken him to. It was much smaller, just like an “office,” with bookshelves lining both sides of the room. Will noticed the book titles were not written in a modern language; he couldn’t understand them at all.
The source of the voice was the chair in front of him—
It was the same voice as in his memory, at least the same as in the animated version of the original story.
“After all, you and I should both be ‘Awakened Ones.’ It’s a pity you never discovered my existence.”
She spun the chair with one foot, turning it from facing away from him to facing him. Then, she rested her hand on the desk. Her long golden hair followed her arm, draping over the desk. Her uniform was like a cape, draped over her back. And on her body, she wore only a grey turtleneck sweater, which made her chest, resting on the table, even more prominent.
Almost exactly as he remembered…
Except for…
Her eyes.
She wore a black blindfold over her eyes, completely covering them, as if she were blind. If Will remembered correctly, she wasn’t supposed to be “blind”—it couldn’t be a “blind” setting, because “perfection” was a very important tag for her.
“Awakened One… what’s that? A word you made up?”
He spoke, moving a step to the left, observing her movements. Her head didn’t move at all. She really didn’t rely on her “eyes” to see him.
Will’s hand once again rested on his ring.
She was “dangerous.”
This was a description that had never appeared on the dungeon’s wealthy patron who had supported the protagonist in the past. It appeared now. She wasn’t the “approachable” leader from the original story. On the contrary, she exuded a dangerous aura that made you not want to be around her.
“You know ‘Galaxy Summit’ and the name ‘Reviki.’ Doesn’t that prove you’ve ‘awakened’ in this world? After all, in the current world, neither of those things exist, right?”
“I didn’t awaken. I just transmigrated…”
Will stopped.
He seemed to have misunderstood something.
He had already discovered that he wasn’t the only one in this world who knew the future of the story—who knew fate. For example, Carver, and the Reviki before him, and himself. But, they might not be transmigrators like him; they might have their own ways of knowing these things.
Like the empress before him.
“Oh. I see. A pity. You didn’t awaken, but fell from outside the universe.”
Though she had a dangerous aura, her way of speaking was still somewhat similar to the book—always mixed with “riddles.”
“And, Ms. Reviki, I’m only here to complete a ‘deal’ with you, not to actually cooperate with you.”
“Alright, alright, sigh. You don’t even want to chat a little. You’re much more cautious than the previous ‘Will’.”
“If you’re talking about the Hysterm family’s child, he’s already dead. The one standing here now… let’s just call him W.”
Will took a few steps forward. He found that although Reviki couldn’t see, she might have other ways of sensing. When he stepped forward, Reviki clearly frowned—but didn’t stop him.
“The materials you want, I can give you the location. When it comes to dungeon materials, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who knows more than me, inside or outside a dungeon.”
Will was almost in front of her. Yet she didn’t draw any weapon or take any “defensive” stance. She just stood there, not even looking up at him.
Reviki had no hostility.
She really did want to cooperate.
Will relaxed a little about the dangerous feeling she gave off and walked to the desk. He looked down and saw the locations of the upgrade materials he wanted marked on the map in front of Reviki.
—That old bastard Carver, he clearly hid a few dungeons from the Adventurer’s Guild’s public map! He hid them again.
“Alright, this is what I want. What do you need me to do?”
“Find the witches.”
“The witches?”
Will remembered, wasn’t Lis already helping them? Why did she need his help now?
“Yes. Witches are a group of people who, due to their long lives and ability to hide easily in dungeons, tend to avoid proactive action.”
“I understand that.”
After all, he was still trying to help a certain little witch out of that state.
“After a certain day, they stopped cooperating with us.”
“May I ask why?”
Hearing this question, a somewhat awkward smile appeared on Reviki’s face.
“Because we didn’t give them what they wanted.”
“…Isn’t that your own fault?”
“That’s a long story. I can give it now, but they lacked… a little patience to wait for the North Star to rise?”
Another metaphor.
“I need you to bring the witches back.”
Will understood…
Because of his “relationship” with Leah, he had become the easiest person to contact the witches. No wonder Reviki hadn’t refused to help him with his request to upgrade the witch.
“This can be part of my plan.”
Will nodded and rolled up the map—she didn’t seem to want to keep it.
“And, that Green-Jadeite…”
“Is that what you call it?”
“Yes. How did you get it?”
“When you’re willing to join us, as an S-class secret, I’ll tell you everything, okay?”
She tilted her head, continuing to try to recruit him—Will knew that Reviki herself was someone who liked to recruit anyone she met.
“Your S-class secrets are so casual. I’ll be leaving then.”
“So, one last question. You’ve come this far, aren’t you going to join us? Become a member of Galaxy Summit?”
“Until I’ve done… what I want to do with my new identity, I won’t join you.”
“Aren’t you curious?”
“Curious about what…”
“The ultimate dungeon, the end of this world, what does it look like?”
Reviki made an offer that was particularly tempting to an “adventurer” in this world.
Will paused at this.
“Something no one has ever seen, something that only lives in a setting as a pursuit for someone with nothing to do—perhaps I’ll consider it with them in the future.”
Unfortunately, this temptation was ineffective on him. He wasn’t “uninterested,” but… from his perspective, it was something that only had meaning when it was “ethereal.” The origin of the world, the ultimate end of all things, descriptions like that only had meaning as objects of exploration when the people in this world didn’t know what they were.
To truly know would become a burden.
At least, that’s what he thought now.
He paused, and when Reviki didn’t say anything else, he opened the door.
“Goodbye. Let’s meet again when I bring the witches back.”
“Goodbye.”
Reviki listened to the sound of the door closing as he left.
“Something no one has ever seen…”
“My, my, what a pity.”
“He really doesn’t seem to have ‘awakened’ in the same way as me. So he couldn’t have guessed…”
“The ultimate dungeon, I’ve really been there, haven’t I?”
Afterword
This volume wasn’t supposed to end here, but the last two chapters felt like the end of a story, so I’ll use this to start the next volume.
This volume had some incidents due to my lack of understanding of certain sensitive topics, and I apologize again. The compensated free chapters have been revised eight times. Because I’ve been busy and sick recently, I’ll talk to my editor when I have some free time (;へ:)
The next volume will have the much-anticipated regret and yandere taming plot. But it’s also about to end.
