This Wave of Zombies is No Good - Chapter 12
Early the next morning, they entered the tunnel. The tunnel was dark and long, spanning a large river, almost ten kilometers in length. Once they passed through the tunnel, they would reach another city.
The tunnel was very dark. Yu Jingtang distributed a small military flashlight to each student, which they tied to their heads. Although not very bright, it was enough to see the path.
In the darkness, there were always some scattered zombies that would suddenly jump out, so their progress was not very fast. By the end of the first day, they had only covered about a third of the distance.
At night, everyone took turns to watch in pairs. After midnight, it was Yu Jingtang and Zou Lang’s turn. Zou Lang pulled Yu Jingtang aside and said, “I have something to show you.”
Yu Jingtang walked a few steps with him to a place that was both away from the sleeping students and safe.
Then Zou Lang opened his hand and took out a few fireworks sticks.
Yu Jingtang was almost used to it, Zou Lang always had something unexpected. He watched as he lit one, the fireworks stick made a hissing sound, burning exceptionally brilliant in the pitch-black underground passage.
In the darkness, Zou Lang’s eyes shone brightly, looking at the small fireworks, he smiled gently.
Yu Jingtang turned his head and looked at the fireworks illuminating Zou Lang’s face. Normally, he was like a rogue without a serious bone in his body, but at this moment, he was smiling like a child.
Seeing his smile, Yu Jingtang suddenly felt a sense of envy for that beauty.
Zou Lang had so many futures, while every day of his life felt like the last.
Yu Jingtang felt that Zou Lang was just confused by his face, he had never known, and could never like the real him.
He looked a bit like his mother, a woman who had a hard life but was incredibly resilient. Besides his appearance, Yu Jingtang also inherited her character. His exterior seemed cold, but his heart was humble.
So many things had never belonged to him, only this sincerity was his own, he selfishly didn’t want to give it away, he just wanted to keep it for himself.
Zou Lang saw that Yu Jingtang was just staring at him in a daze, and turned his head to ask him, “Don’t you like it? It was hard to find, don’t waste it.”
Yu Jingtang coldly said, “You should save these tricks for chasing girls.”
“This is what I like, not for pleasing girls.” Zou Lang pouted, “When I was a child, there was a fireworks event during the Lantern Festival. But my dad was very strict about home education, and he wouldn’t let me go. I cried all night that day. After that, I fell in love with setting off fireworks, probably because I didn’t see the fireworks that time, and I always wanted to make up for myself. When I grew up, I thought, this old man is really annoying, whatever he wants me to do, I just won’t do it. It wasn’t until I left home that I tasted what freedom was, and that feeling was too fascinating.” In the darkness, he became more and more noisy.
“Your rebellious psychology seems to have come a bit late.” Yu Jingtang’s hand was on the gun, and he never dared to relax his vigilance.
“No, it’s not rebellion, I know what I’m doing.” Zou Lang lowered his head, his tone suddenly changed, and he lit another firework stick, with a bit of sadness, “But I only found out later that what is missed is missed, it’s not the same as when I was a child.”
“I heard that this time you disappeared, Army Commander Zou was hospitalized.” Yu Jingtang suddenly spoke again.
Zou Lang turned his head abruptly to look at him, unable to hide his surprise, “Ah… Hospitalized? Which hospital? What’s the problem?”
“I don’t know, I just heard about it, it’s probably not too serious.” Yu Jingtang looked at him, “It seems that you care more about your father than you think.”
“After all, he’s still my dad, what about your dad? What does he do?” At this point in the conversation, Zou Lang realized that he really knew very little about Yu Jingtang.
Hearing this question, Yu Jingtang suddenly stiffened and lowered his head in silence for a moment. Just when Zou Lang thought he wouldn’t answer, he spoke again, “My father was a gambler, a drunkard, he later committed a crime and was arrested, and died of illness in prison.”
Zou Lang suddenly felt like he had hit a sore spot, and for a moment he wished he could slap himself.
But Yu Jingtang didn’t seem to mind him uncovering his scars, and he lowered his head and gave a bitter smile, “My family was quite poor, my mother wanted to send me to the army, and even changed my age for this. But because of my father, my enlistment review didn’t pass, my mother even went to bribe someone and gave gifts. Later, I was specially recruited. At that time, I thought, I have to make something of myself to be worthy of my mother.”
After saying these few sentences, it seemed like he had said all the words he was going to say in his life, and then he closed his mouth, his pale face made Zou Lang feel heartache, only then did he know, the year on that nameplate was all fake, he was younger than he thought. But what had he experienced over the years that had sharpened him into a sharp knife?
As they went deeper and deeper, the signal in the tunnel became worse and worse. They could no longer determine their position, nor did they know how much longer they would have to go before they could get out of the tunnel.
The zombies hidden in the darkness were increasing, and the speed of the team’s progress was getting slower and slower.
In the long darkness and under great pressure, the thing that Yu Jingtang feared the most happened. The students’ emotions began to collapse.
On the third day of walking, a female student screamed due to a breakdown, attracting zombies, and she and two other students were bitten to death.
The atmosphere became oppressive and heavy, and the entire team was enveloped in a tense atmosphere.
“We’re almost out, the exit is just ahead, as long as everyone persists through this section of the road, we can reach a safe place.” These were the words that Yu Jingtang said the most these days, but he didn’t know when that time would be, and how many people could get out. If the emergency lights ran out of power, even retreating would be a luxury, they would fall into terrifying darkness and become a few nameless corpses in this tunnel.
In these few days, Zou Lang had told all the jokes and anecdotes he knew. He never thought that he would have a day when he was too exhausted to speak.
On the fourth day, as they progressed, there were more and more zombies and corpses ahead. Everyone’s emotions seemed to be on the verge of collapse.
While walking, a female student suddenly tripped, screamed, and almost fell.
Zou Lang, who was next to her, grabbed her hand. He looked at the ground, she had just stepped on a dead person’s hand.
Yu Jingtang also came over from the front of the team, frowning deeply, this situation… wasn’t quite right… He looked down at the dead person, the person’s face was zombified, but the brain matter was flowing out. He was wearing a military uniform. Yu Jingtang went over and took off the nameplate from the man’s neck.
In the chaos of war, this was the identification of the dead.
This was already the third military corpse.
Why were there so many military corpses here?
Yu Jingtang’s gaze suddenly fell on a small box next to the tunnel, he walked over, brushed off the dust on the box, revealing a dangerous sign.
“This thing…” Zou Lang came over, looked at the sign under the light of the emergency light on his head, and was stunned.
Yu Jingtang answered him, “It’s a blasting point, a powerful blasting point, starting from today’s section of the road, there are along the way, installed next to each tunnel’s load-bearing pillar.” He suddenly remembered something, stood up and asked Zou Lang, “How did you guys get trapped?”
“We were on our way to the bridge when we received news that the bridge collapsed. Then, the base station was destroyed, and communication was interrupted. After that, we were trapped in that bank and could only send out a distress signal.” Zou Lang answered, and Yu Jingtang should know what happened next.
“That bridge was not destroyed by zombies, but was blown up by humans, perhaps they didn’t want the people here to get out. Or maybe there was another purpose.” Yu Jingtang suddenly whispered a possibility that was a bit surprising, but also within reason.
There were also blasting points here, but they hadn’t had time to ignite. City C was surrounded by sea on three sides, after the bridge was destroyed, this tunnel was the only way out to the inland on the road from City C. Once it was also blown up, City C would be completely cut off from the outside world. And City C also did not have an airport, there were not many open spaces and rooftops that could accommodate military helicopters. It was for this reason that Yu Jingtang chose to parachute in to meet them. Someone wanted to turn City C into an island.
Zou Lang seemed to understand the key point, “No… impossible…”
Yu Jingtang took his words, “Those blasting points, and the people who placed the blasting points are the military, but I have not seen the serial number of this army, there was a problem with the transmission of information, if the higher-ups knew, they would not only send me to assist you.”
