- Chapter 4 - A Wise Man Does Not Take an Immediate Loss
Once everyone was gathered, Yu Jingtang made some simple arrangements. During the day, Little Bun and the students stayed behind, while his and Zou Lang’s primary task was to retrieve the airdropped relief supplies. The package contained food and various rescue medicines.
Although the city had lost electricity and natural gas, the water supply had not stopped. After everyone had washed up, Yu Jingtang began to distribute the day’s food, which was still compressed biscuits.
Zou Lang intervened, “Don’t eat this. I found some instant noodles behind the hotel yesterday. Although they’re not very nutritious, they’re at least better than compressed biscuits.”
This statement immediately received a warm response from a group of students.
Seeing this man leading a rebellion, Yu Jingtang checked his watch, “No matter what you eat, we must set off in fifteen minutes.”
Zou Lang put a cigarette in his mouth without lighting it, and began to busily direct the children as if they were playing house. He instructed some to gather firewood, some to flip over a barbecue grill from behind the hotel, and finally found some charcoal. While lighting the fire, he also taught the children, “It doesn’t take much time to boil water. Learn to make use of local resources.”
Yu Jingtang stood by the door with a gun in his hand, watching them work with a cold face.
While boiling the water, Zou Lang, adhering to the principles of “eat all, kill all, grab all,” casually touched the things left behind by the homeowner that were not taken away, and said with great regret, “It’s a pity that the frozen chicken legs in the refrigerator have become moldy.” He seemed to wish he could make a feast.
The students responded one by one with tears, beginning to reminisce about the various delicacies before the zombie outbreak.
“When I have time in the future, I’ll treat you to some game. Have you ever eaten wild rabbits or pheasants? Sparrows and scorpions are actually quite delicious.” Zou Lang began to distribute instant noodles while saying this, with an expression that seemed to say, ;You haven’t eaten it before, let me open your eyes’.
Yu Jingtang finally couldn’t stand it anymore, “What are you showing off for? There’s even how to eat field mice in wilderness survival training.” The usually reticent him rarely said such a long sentence. It was clear that he was quite annoyed by Zou Lang. After finishing speaking, he looked at his watch and emphasized, “You have seven minutes left.”
After the noodles were ready, Zou Lang brought over two servings of instant noodles, “I didn’t catch any field mice, so make do with laotan pickled cabbage.” After handing it over, he didn’t wait for Yu Jingtang to take it and turned his hand over, “Wait, change it to the previous one. The spicy one stimulates the stomach.”
Yu Jingtang didn’t say a word, but he took it and ate it without any courtesy. After a few bites, he didn’t care that Zou Lang hadn’t finished eating, and dragged him by the collar and walked out.
Zou Lang was holding onto his noodles, unwilling to let go, “Hey, hey, hey, have another sip of soup. Why are you so dogmatic? The time is set by you! Eating too fast is not good for the stomach!”
At seven-thirty in the morning, Zou Lang was walking on the road, huffing and puffing, mourning his half-box of instant noodles as he walked.
The city was quiet in the morning. It even felt like there would be a breakfast vendor at the next intersection, or an old man running out for a morning jog. But there were no vendors or old men, only zombies strolling around tirelessly.
Yu Jingtang was playing with the knife in his hand, casually twirling it, walking and cleaning up along the way, cutting down about five or six zombies.
Zou Lang’s mouth couldn’t stay idle, talking in a disjointed manner.
Yu Jingtang didn’t bother with him, walking ahead with a cold face. Zou Lang’s brain was spinning, and finally, he asked a question that Yu Jingtang had to answer, “Is your communicator working properly?”
They had once been trapped here because of a problem with the communicator.
Yu Jingtang glanced at him and finally answered coldly, “It’s not your communicators that are broken, but the base station. So the signal can only transmit simple things, unable to make calls.”
“Oh.” Zou Lang suddenly realized, “No wonder, I was wondering why my important message couldn’t be sent out?”
“Important message?” Yu Jingtang was a bit puzzled when he heard this.
“Yes, the zombies here are a bit different.”
“What’s different?” Yu Jingtang frowned slightly. This was different from what he knew. Could it be that the zombies here really had mutated?
“I’ve encountered one before, some parts of it were particularly large.”
“Some parts?”
Zou Lang looked embarrassed and gestured with his hands below his body.
Yu Jingtang thought he was joking and rolled his eyes, “Disgusting.” He walked around a street corner and suddenly stopped, “We’re here, it’s this pile.” Then he looked at his watch, it was about an hour’s walk from the base.
Zou Lang walked up and looked at the pile of supplies on the ground, flipping through to see if there were any good things, and casually asked, “How many times are we going to take them?”
Yu Jingtang held up a finger.
Looking at the pile of things on the ground, Zou Lang estimated that it must weigh hundreds of pounds. He refused to comply, “My goodness, this is revenge! You want me to carry all these things by myself in one go? I won’t be eaten by zombies, but I’ll be crushed to death by these relief supplies.”
This person really is… such a pain. Yu Jingtang took the gun from his shoulder and handed it to him, “How about you guard, and I’ll carry the supplies?”
“Sure, sure.” Zou Lang reached out to take it.
“There’s a zombie!” Yu Jingtang pointed behind Zou Lang, who crouched down and saw that there was no one behind him.
When he looked back, Yu Jingtang had already calmly put the gun back, with an expression that said he had given him a chance.
It’s all tricks. Zou Lang gritted his teeth, unable to believe that he also had a day of being bullied. He snorted in dissatisfaction, took off his jacket and tied it around his waist, unpacked the relief supplies, took out the backpack and put it on his back. Zou Lang, after all, was a tall and muscular man, and he started walking as soon as he straightened up.
Yu Jingtang had a bit of a better impression of Zou Lang in his heart. This young master, although he was pretentious, he was quite capable when it came to doing work. It’s just a pity… that even sweating profusely couldn’t shut Zou Lang’s mouth.
“Why is it me, wouldn’t it be better if you brought someone else, what’s that student’s name? Ah Liang or something, isn’t he also tall and strong?”
Yu Jingtang snorted, “You think I want to bring you?”
Part of the task he received was to ensure Zou Lang’s safety, but this was a secret order from the leader. In this city full of zombies, even if he was placed in a safe place, he couldn’t guarantee safety. The real safety was only by his side. Only in his line of sight could he ensure the safety of the person in front of him.
Zou Lang seemed to have completely missed the impatience in Yu Jingtang’s words, and just kept on going on his own, “Hey, we still have several days to get along, what should I call you? Calling you Major Yu is too formal, Jingtang, Little Jing, Little Tang, or should I call you wife?”
Hearing this, Yu Jingtang suddenly stopped, turned around and put the knife in his hand against Zou Lang’s neck, “Believe it or not, I’ll cut you down now, and then say that the zombies ate you.”
Zou Lang only felt a surge of killing intent! It seemed that Yu Jingtang was about to count the crimes of him taking advantage of him last night.
A gust of wind blew by, and Zou Lang looked down at the ground, a few strands of hair had been cut off, the knife in Yu Jingtang’s hand was really a treasure knife that could cut hair with a blow…
What does it mean to be a wise man who does not take an immediate loss? Zou Lang gently moved away Yu Jingtang’s knife and obediently shut his mouth.
Seeing that the warning had some effect, Yu Jingtang moved the knife away with satisfaction and put it back on his waist.
