This Wave of Zombies is No Good - Chapter 47
After some fuss, the driver finally started the bus.
Yu Jingtang and Zou Lang stood at the back of the bus, and the driver drove very slowly all the way.
A middle-aged woman finally couldn’t stand it and asked the driver, “Master, at this rate, when can we reach B City?”
The driver said, “I also want to go back to rest as soon as possible. The road conditions are not good. Yesterday’s rain washed down the stones from the mountain next to us. Otherwise, why do you think the previous bus broke down?”
Upon hearing this, a man in his forties, dressed in a suit and leather shoes, said, “Everyone, don’t rush. We are all in a hurry. Safety first, safety first.”
Yu Jingtang stood at the back, leaning against the corner of a seat backrest, and didn’t say a word all the way.
Zou Lang saw that he had just been sick for two days and his stomachache had recurred, so he asked him, “What’s wrong? You look pale.”
Yu Jingtang shook his head, “It’s okay, just a bit dizzy.”
In addition to being dizzy, he was also a bit cold. He didn’t know whether he was carsick or hypoglycemic, but he was not comfortable.
And this bus started and stopped, every time it started, it swayed, and he frowned slightly.
Zou Lang took out a bottle of water he had kept close to him and asked him, “Do you want to drink some water? It’s warm.”
Yu Jingtang shook his head, “No.”
Zou Lang leaned over again, reached out and hugged him, “Come, lean on my shoulder.”
Yu Jingtang was still immersed in the shadow of the bed collapsing two days ago, and began to struggle, “Forget it, it’s even more dizzy when leaning.”
Zou Lang whispered in his ear, “Don’t be shy, no one on this bus knows anyone, and we won’t see the others here again in this lifetime after getting off the bus.” As he spoke, he squeezed through the bus, turned his body to block the aisle, but carefully reached out from behind, wrapped his arm around Yu Jingtang’s waist, and let Yu Jingtang lean half on him.
Yu Jingtang pushed a few times without pushing away, so he let him be.
This little movement couldn’t be seen by the people in front, but it was clear in the eyes of a few people behind.
Regarding the casual sprinkle of dog food, even if the people didn’t say anything, they were sneering in their hearts. Thus, these two were labeled by the crowd as the soldier and his little pretty boyfriend.
They drove for a while, and by this time, they had been on the road for over two hours. The sky gradually darkened, and a yellow warning sign for a roadblock appeared on the road.
This sign was very familiar to everyone in the post-apocalyptic world, indicating that there was a quarantine station ahead.
This kind of highway quarantine station was built on the original rest area, and the structure of the rest area was modified. For better control, most of the rest areas removed the gas station and dining parts. And the original layout was changed to waiting area, rest area, isolation area, etc.
Since the zombie virus outbreak, this kind of quarantine station has become very common. The initial inspection was quite cumbersome, even requiring undressing. Later, Fang Yanzhou and his team invented a rapid blood test method, and the basic inspection method became temperature measurement and finger blood collection.
As long as a person was bitten, after 10 minutes, a little finger blood could be tested to see if they had been infected.
These people lived in the post-apocalyptic world, and they were accustomed to this kind of examination. They had to be tested when entering the city, leaving the city, going to large public places, and even felt that life was not fulfilling enough if they were not tested every day.
This inspection station implemented a person-vehicle separation policy. A gate was set up for passing vehicles, and only when all personnel were checked and found to be problem-free could the vehicle pass again.
The driver parked the bus in the parking lot of the inspection station, opened the door and got off the bus. Everyone was familiar with the process and consciously followed him off the bus.
Yu Jingtang and Zou Lang also followed the crowd into the quarantine station.
The waiting hall of this quarantine station was brightly lit, but it was very eerie, there was no one.
This was an empty quarantine station, with no people and no zombies. The safe passage after quarantine was closed. At first, people were a bit cautious, but after a round, they didn’t encounter a single staff member.
“What’s going on?” The driver scratched his head, this was the first time he had encountered such a situation.
Someone among the passengers asked, “Did the staff abandon their posts?”
Another person said, “Maybe they went to dinner?”
This answer was quickly denied by others, “They should have shifts for dinner.”
“Maybe there was a zombie outbreak.” A passenger spoke up.
The driver gave him a glance, “Don’t jinx it. The staff at the quarantine station are fully protected and equipped with weapons. It’s not that easy to get bitten by zombies.”
“Is it possible that this quarantine point has been withdrawn?” Another passenger guessed.
“Impossible,” the driver categorically denied, “If the point is withdrawn, the passage will be opened. Anyway, if you can’t find anyone, you can’t pass, and my bus can’t pass either.”
Without quarantine staff, they couldn’t pass here.
“So what do we do now? There’s no village in front and no shop behind. Should we call the police?” The passenger who looked like a boss asked.
“Let me contact the staff here first.” The driver said, picked up his phone and dialed a number. The phone went through, but no one answered.
Yu Jingtang had been standing on the outskirts of the crowd. The sky outside was gloomy, and there was a muffled thunder in the distance. Then it started to rain.
Yu Jingtang felt a vague unease in his heart. When they came in, there were still several cars waiting for inspection parked next to them. Logically speaking, the fastest inspection time for a car was 10 minutes, and the slowest was 30 minutes. The inspection station was equipped with 5-6 staff members. But now, not only were the staff not there, but the passengers who should have gotten off the bus for inspection were also not there. Where did all these people go?
But it was quiet here, very quiet. Other than the sound of the rain, there was no other noise, and it didn’t seem like there were any zombies.
Zou Lang saw him frowning but didn’t say anything, standing to one side, listening to the driver and the other passengers discussing.
It was as if the people on this bus had suddenly been thrown onto a deserted island, cut off from the world, with all other people in the world disappearing.
The driver dialed the phone again, but still no one answered. He was getting a bit impatient and turned his head to say, “I’m going to check the back, does anyone want to come with me?”
In addition to the gate they had passed through, there was a small area used to accommodate temporary isolation personnel and staff for accommodation and rest.
The driver decided to go there to see if they could find a living person, at least to ask what was going on.
Among the crowd, Zou Lang and Yu Jingtang looked at each other, their eyes crossed, and Yu Jingtang nodded slightly.
Zou Lang stepped forward and said to the driver, “I’ll go with you.”
“No!” In the crowd, the fat man suddenly jumped out and said, “In case something really happens, you, the soldier, should stay and protect us.”
“The soldier doesn’t owe you anything, don’t order him around. Besides, he’s going with the driver to find people, which is also for our smooth departure.” The female student couldn’t stand it anymore.
“Soldiers are raised by us taxpayers’ money, isn’t it right to protect the people?” The fat man continued.
“So what do you suggest? We all wait here? Spend the night here?” The female student adjusted her glasses. She hadn’t spoken before, and everyone thought she was a gentle girl. They didn’t expect her to be so sharp when she started to be sarcastic.
Yu Jingtang, who had been silent all along, took a step forward and said to Zou Lang and the others, “I’ll watch here.”
The crowd looked at him and recognized him as the one who had been carsick on the bus earlier. They didn’t seem to expect him to do anything. But when someone responded, it boosted everyone’s courage.
Yu Jingtang then said to the driver, “Give me the keys. If there’s a special situation, we’ll retreat back to the bus.”
The driver hesitated a bit, and Zou Lang said on the side, “Give it to him. If my friend is not reliable, then there’s no reliable person in this world.”
Only then did the driver hand the car keys to Yu Jingtang.
Yu Jingtang took the keys and said to Zou Lang, “Be careful.”
“I know.” Zou Lang handed his bag to Yu Jingtang, then took an axe from a nearby emergency box. The driver also took a wrench just in case.
The driver led Zou Lang away, leaving Yu Jingtang and about thirty passengers in the hall.
The middle-aged man who looked like a boss didn’t think much of Yu Jingtang and said, “Young man, are you up to it? You look like you could be blown over by a gust of wind. Don’t leave us and run when the zombies come.”
Yu Jingtang didn’t want to reveal his identity and stood aside without answering.
Two girls suddenly walked out of the crowd, chatting and laughing as they walked to one side. Yu Jingtang frowned and asked, “Where are you going?”
“Handsome guy, we’re going to the bathroom.” The two girls giggled, “Do you want to come with us?”
Yu Jingtang was not amused, his face turned slightly red, but he still said, “Don’t just the two of you go, go in a group. Anyone else need to go to the bathroom?”
A few more people stood up from the crowd, both men and women.
The bathroom was on the side of the inspection area. They needed to go through a short corridor.
Those people went together.
Yu Jingtang’s nerves were still tense, his gaze turned to the door. It was still raining outside, and it was getting heavier. The visibility outside was very low. Yu Jingtang suddenly saw some vague black figures in the rain not far away.
At first, Yu Jingtang thought the staff had finally returned, but upon closer inspection, the pace of the figures suggested they might be zombies!
At the same time, a scream came from the direction of the bathroom. The people who had gone to the bathroom ran back in terror, “There are zombies in the bathroom!”
Yu Jingtang knew something was wrong. The zombies here were different from the ones he was used to seeing outside, roaring and baring their fangs.
They seemed to be “silent”, hiding themselves quietly until their prey appeared and entered their cage, then they showed their fangs…
“Everyone, quickly retreat to the bus!” Realizing something was wrong, a sense of worry rose in Yu Jingtang’s heart. He was more worried about Zou Lang’s situation than the situation here…
