- Chapter 39 - Before Dawn (Rita's Perspective)
Feeling somewhat light and dreamy, Rita woke up. She had the sense that she had been enjoying a pleasant dream. The room was still dark—it seemed to be before dawn.
Next to her, Folca was sound asleep.
As she recalled what had happened the night before, her face grew warm. Embarrassing as it was, she felt happy.
Worried that it might have all been a dream, Rita pinched her right cheek. It hurt. Still anxious, she pinched her left cheek too. That hurt as well.
The sensations were clear, and it didn’t seem like a dream.
For now, she decided to get dressed. She sat up, intending to stand, but as she moved, she felt a liquid trickle down her inner thighs. She immediately understood what had happened and, in a fluster, pulled a handkerchief from the pocket of her clothes hanging next to the bed to clean herself up.
As she wiped herself, she reminded herself that she’d have to find a way to discreetly wash the handkerchief later. She hurriedly dressed.
Rita moved over to the mirror, tugged at her collar to fix the wrinkles in her clothes, and pulled up her hair to fasten it. Now, everything looked as it usually did, but she quickly shook her head.
Things were no longer the same as yesterday. Her appearance might be the same, her work might be the same, but her relationship with Folca had changed.
She sat on the edge of the bed. Folca was still asleep. His face was peaceful, almost childlike in its innocence. He looked so cute. Rita had the urge to kiss him. She hesitated for a moment, wondering if it was appropriate to kiss her sleeping lord, but after everything they had done last night, surely it wouldn’t be a problem. She gently placed a kiss on his cheek. Folca’s skin was smooth and soft, and it felt nice.
“Lord Folca, I love you.”
Saying it out loud made her cheeks loosen into a smile. From now on, she didn’t have to hide her feelings for Folca.
She would still choose her time and place, of course, but she could tell the person she loved that she loved him. That made her incredibly happy.
Before she knew it, tears were streaming down her cheeks. She wiped them away with her fingers.
A bird chirped, signaling that dawn was near. Perhaps it was the sound of the bird that caused Folca to stir. He shifted slightly and opened his eyes.
“Good morning, Lord Folca. I love you.”
With the brightest smile she could muster, Rita spoke those words.
