Promise
“…Why did you appear in front of me now?”
Before I realized it, I had posed the question.
Sakurazaka-san looked surprised, her expression filled with question marks.
“What do you mean?”
“There must have been plenty of opportunities for you to approach me before. Why did you show up in front of me only now?”
Sakurazaka-san narrowed her eyes slightly, lowering her gaze.
“I’ve been suffering from amnesia for a certain period. I only regained my memories in the middle of August. Since then, I’ve been trying to locate where you were, going through the transfer procedures, and doing various things.”
“Amnesia…”
“Yes. I don’t know what triggered it, but I had forgotten about the power to rewind time and our memories together… It’s awful, isn’t it? Forgetting about Yu-kun…it’s truly unbelievable.”
Suddenly, her eyes darkened, and she bit her lower lip so hard that blood seemed to emerge.
Suddenly, as if snapping back to reality, she continued her story.
“So, I was in an accident. It seemed I was on the brink of life and death, but when I woke up, I remembered everything about Yu-kun and this power. Ah, I’m bad at explaining things. Even though I said I had amnesia, it wasn’t like I forgot everything. I had just completely forgotten about Yu-kun and this power. So, I still remember my utterly boring elementary and middle school days.”
“Can you transfer schools that easily?”
“Yeah. I just need to threaten someone in power. So, I searched for any dirt on the principal. That took the most time. The information I got about him being involved in a sugar daddy relationship was a huge win. Using that as leverage, I managed to arrange my transfer.”
She’d go to such lengths just to get close to me…
“… You’re crazy…”
“This is normal. Don’t say it like that.”
She pouted, sticking out her lips like an upset octopus.
I felt like giving up on trying to understand her.
She’s an existence beyond my comprehension.
Her thought processes were entirely different from mine.
I wasn’t even sure if I should consider her within the framework of a normal human being.
Faced with such an unknown, what should I do?
Should I just give up?
It was a fleeting moment just as I was starting to feel resigned——
“Yu-kun, where are you looking? Just look at me.”
I was staring out of the window.
Sakurazaka-san, with her eyes fixed on me, spoke with a hint of dissatisfaction.
However, I couldn’t divert my gaze from the window.
Because——
“…What the hell?”
A girl was floating in mid-air, right there.
As she opened the window, she entered the room without any hesitation.
Even if I hadn’t locked the door, would anyone just waltz in like this?
No, wait, why is she floating in the first place?
“Um, who might you be?”
Sakurazaka-san seemed unfazed, even with a girl floating in the air.
She positioned herself as if to shield me and faced the girl.
“I am Haruka Yuuki. I have come to kill you.”
“I’d rather not be killed. No but, how are you floating?”
“I float because I can.”
“Are you okay in the head?”
Sakurazaka-san said so with a hint of amusement.
However, this girl— this Yuuki-san was genuinely floating.
Even now, after intruding into the living room, she was hovering about twenty centimeters off the ground.
Her height was only around 150 centimeters, so she didn’t seem too high off the ground.
“I am aware that you possess the power to rewind time.”
“How do you know that?”
“Because I’ve been affected by your power. Today is the seventh time for me.”
“Huh?”
“To put it bluntly, it’s a nuisance. Please disappear.”
“…Why, why does a woman I’ve just met have this power too?… It should be a privilege only for Yu-kun…”
She gritted her teeth hard, the highlights in her eyes vanishing.
Her gaze was sharp, full of hostility.
I was completely overwhelmed, unable to utter a word.
“Is Yu-kun the name of that man over there?”
Sakurazaka-san doesn’t answer.
Taking the silence as confirmation, Yuuki-san places her hand on her chin, a thoughtful look on her face.
“Hmm. So, do you also possess a power?”
“Huh? I don’t have…”
I surely don’t have such supernatural abilities.
What is happening here?
It’s as if I’ve wandered into a world of fiction.
That thought seemed to make more sense in this baffling situation; my mind was already at its limit.
“I see. My assumption was a bit off.”
“What do you mean? Are there others who can pull off these ridiculous things?”
“Yes. There are others who possess powers like me and her. They just hide very well. Some with more showy powers seem to flaunt them, though.”
“…what a chuunibyou setup.”
This was giving me a headache.
Normally, I would dismiss such claims, but the sight before me added credibility.
Humans can’t float, and they certainly can’t rewind time.
Thinking that there are people with mysterious powers seemed more rational.
“We’ve strayed from the topic. In any case, your power is a nuisance. Please die.”
“…You’re the one that should die.”
A cold, low voice.
That inorganic voice, filled with hatred, sent shivers down my spine.
Sakurazaka-san slammed her chair to the ground as she stood up.
With unsteady steps, she approached Yuuki-san.
She drew a knife from her pocket and brandished it in a crescent arc.
“…!”
Yuuki-san narrowly stepped back in time.
Strands of her flaxen hair fell to the floor, cut by mere centimeters.
“You’re not so calm, are you?”
“I thought it was just me and Yu-kun… just the two of us! This ruins our perfect world together!”
Yuuki-san, too, was repeating the same day.
That fact irritated Sakurazaka-san to no end.
“You don’t seem like you’ll die easily.”
“You’re the one who should die.”
Without any hesitation, Sakurazaka-san aimed the knife at Yuuki-san.
Yuuki-san dodged in a way no human possibly could, almost birdlike.
It was acrobatics on a higher level.
With the knife’s limited reach, even grazing her seemed impossible.
“I guess it can’t be helped… I’ll choose another day.”
Yuuki-san swiftly exited through the window, cutting through the wind.
“What, running away?”
“I’m not very good at head-on confrontations.”
“Then why didn’t you ambush me?”
“I thought it would be regrettable to kill without any warning.”
With a faint smile, Yuuki-san turned on her heel.
And then, she disappeared upwards.
Sakurazaka-san seemed unconvinced, but after putting her knife back into her pocket, she returned to the seat across from me.
The cold expression on Sakurazaka-san’s face vanished, replaced by a warm, gentle smile.
“…Well, that was surprising. Who knew people could float?”
I wanted to retort with ‘Look who’s talking,’ but I agreed with her sentiment.
I never imagined there would be people who could levitate.
While being able to rewind time like Sakurazaka-san seems even more absurd, there’s no denying its reality.
“Are you okay? She did say she came to kill you.”
“Huh, are you worried about me?”
With an innocent smile, like a child presented with a feast, she brought her face closer to mine.
“…No, it’s not like that. I just—”
“Hehe, one way or another, Yu-kun is always so kind.”
“I just don’t want any trouble. It’d be problematic if I also got harmed.”
“Don’t worry. No matter what happens, I’ll always protect you. I promise.”
She raised her pinky finger and offered it to me.
It’s a pinky swear. I let out a sigh and looked away.
“Come on, like this.”
“Hey, wait—”
Sakurazaka-san forcefully grabbed my hand and initiated the pinky swear.
While singing the familiar chant of linking little fingers to confirm a promise, she joyfully moved our linked fingers up and down.
It’s hard to believe that just moments ago, she had brandished a knife.
This duality only emphasized the uniqueness of the girl known as Akari Sakurazaka.
Still, the fact that she always carries a knife is… unsettling.
Normally, one could be convinced with a simple reason like self-defense, but with Sakurazaka-san, it probably isn’t the case.
For instance, if I were to ask her to kill someone, she might agree without hesitation.
That’s what I felt.
