Absolute Regression - Chapter 1
They came in various forms: those with strong energy, those cunning and sly, skilled fighters, diplomatic negotiators, and occasionally those who possessed a combination of strength, cunningness, fighting prowess, and diplomacy. Yet, not a single one had ever left this realm alive.
But the man standing before him now was different from all the intruders he had encountered before.
Looking into the weary eyes that had tasted the bitterness of life, the specter couldn’t help but have one thought.
“Darn, is today my unlucky day?”
Suppressing his anxiety, the specter calmly asked, “Are you here to seek revenge?”
“No,” replied the man, his voice clear and pleasant to the ears.
“Then, what brings you here on this night?”
Please, let those words not be, “It’s a good day to die, you ghostly wretch.”
“I have a request,” the man said.
Relieved that the words he feared didn’t come, the specter inquired, “Please, go on.”
The request that followed was more astounding than any words the specter had heard in his lifetime.
“Send me back to the past.”
A moment of silence ensued.
The specter, gazing at the man with a subtle glint in his eyes, cautiously asked, “How can a human defy time?”
“I don’t know. You, the only one in this world who can unleash the Great Regression Law, should tell me.”
The specter did not deny this fact.
“How did you know that I could perform it?”
“Seo Jin.”
At the mention of that beloved name, the specter was overcome with emotion.
“How do you know my sister?”
“We were comrades during my wandering days.”
“Where is she now?”
“She’s dead.”
“Ah!”
The specter let out a deep sigh. The Great Regression Law had been studied and passed down in his lineage for hundreds of years. Even in his father’s generation, it remained incomplete, so he and his younger sister had been striving to assist their father in completing the Great Regression Law from a young age.
And ten years ago, his sister, unable to bear it any longer, left the family, determined to pursue her own path. The specter understood her decision. She had dedicated her youthful twenties to research under the guise of the family’s legacy.
“How did Jin die?”
“I avenged her, so don’t worry about it. Before she died, she wanted me to convey a message to you. She regretted living a life without freedom. She hoped that you wouldn’t live a life solely dedicated to researching the Law but instead live your own life.”
The specter fell into deep regret.
The man waited until he had composed himself before asking the most important question of the night.
“Has the law been completed?”
The specter nodded slowly.
“Yes. In my generation, we have finally completed the law.”
Joy flickered across the man’s face for a moment. Seeing his bright expression, the specter could tell that the man was quite charming.
“When can I go back?”
“That’s uncertain. You could go back ten years, thirty years, even to infancy. Or if you’re unlucky, you might go back to yesterday.”
“I consider myself lucky, so I’m not worried.”
“You think you can go back right away.”
A hint of bitterness crossed the specter’s face.
“That’s impossible. If it were possible, I would have already gone back.”
“But you said you completed the law?”
“I haven’t obtained all the necessary ingredients for the law.”
“I’ll get the ingredients for you.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Try me.”
“Among the ninety-nine required ingredients for the law, I haven’t obtained five of them. The first one is absolutely unobtainable. Have you heard of the Sound Thunder Bell?”
“The artifact of the Wind Heaven Sect?”
“Yes, that’s it.”
The Wind Heaven Sect was the most powerful force in Saewoe, the successor of the Blood Sect.
“To enact the Great Regression Law, we need the sound waves emitted when the Sound Thunder Bell rings. But that bell is a treasure of the Wind Heaven Sect, placed behind the sect leader’s throne. Can you even obtain it?”
The specter couldn’t even bring himself to ask for the Sound Thunder Bell. If he did, it would risk the family falling into the hands of the corrupt leader of the Wind Heaven Sect.
“I’ll get it for you.”
“!”
The man’s words struck the specter with great shock. He had never even dreamed that he was the son of the deceased Demon King.
Now, the specter understood the feats he had accomplished before. He knew he wasn’t an ordinary person, but he hadn’t realized his status was this significant.
“How did you survive, then?”
At this, the man loosened his clothes. The scars left on his chest were so fatal that the specter almost exclaimed, “Good heavens, how are you not a ghost?”
“When I woke up, I was in a pile of corpses. I crawled out just before being buried alive.”
“I see.”
“The reason I cannot forgive Hwamu-gi is not because he tried to kill me, nor because he killed our father, or even because he killed my cunning brother. Living a cursed life, who cares about dying at the hands of someone?”
“And then?”
“That day, Hwamu-gi killed everyone, from novices to experts, even children. He even killed the pets we had. He exterminated every living being in sight.”
“Lies! Unbelievable.”
“Whether you believe it or not is none of my concern.”
The specter could sense the truth in the man’s words. The man he had seen so far was not someone who would lie about such things.
“Who he is doesn’t matter now. He might actually be a significant figure in some grand scheme. He might even receive applause for uprooting the Demon Sect. But to me, Hwamu-gi is nothing more than the ruthless, cold-blooded enemy who killed my family without a shred of mercy. No matter how you look at it, I cannot kill him in this era, so I must go back and kill him. Before I do, I must ask: Were you really so strong that you had to kill children as well?”
The specter stared at the man with a bewildered expression. He had never imagined such a backstory for the man.
The man placed his hand over his chest.
“That day, my guards died trying to protect me. Not even friends, just acquaintances I barely knew. They sacrificed day and night to protect me. So please, don’t waste any more of my precious time. Tell me, what is the third ingredient?”
“You really…”
“I’m a busy man. So, what’s the next ingredient?”
Since meeting the man, the specter let out the deepest sigh he had ever breathed.
“No matter who you are, this time, you won’t be able to obtain it.”
“What is it?”
“The Sacred Carp of Ten Thousand Years. The last recorded sighting of the Sacred Carp was three hundred years ago. It might not even exist in this world anymore.”
“Truly a cursed ritual. Should I just chop you off here and now?”
“Please, be patient.”
“Patience it is. How did I end up here? Wait. This might take a while this time.”
“Do you think the Sacred Carp will just jump into your hands if you dangle a fishing rod?”
“Even the Sacred Carp is just an ordinary fish in the end, isn’t it? It must be somewhere in this world, underwater. Wait. I’ll make sure to obtain it.”
Watching him stride towards the impossible, the specter realized that stories about his brother and even his unknown name were not as important as he thought.
