Absolute Regression - Chapter 8
The rumor of a disciple of the Heavenly Blade Demon meeting their end at my hands began to spread rapidly throughout the sect, and Ian’s concern grew in proportion to its ripple effect.
“It’s chaotic. Everyone I meet talks only about you and Yangpo,” she sighed, adding, “…and about me too.”
As the instigator of the fight, it was natural that there would be various rumors surrounding her.
“It’s good to become famous. Isn’t striving for fame the essence of Murim?” I remarked.
“I don’t like it,” she replied.
“You’ll become even more famous in the future. What will you do then?” I asked.
Ian let out a light sigh, but her expression didn’t darken. There must have been a positive element of change at the center of this chaos.
“I’m worried because the Heavenly Blade Demon values honor. Please, just let it go,” she pleaded.
“Who said that? Does Heavenly Blade Demon value honor?” I asked.
“Don’t they? Isn’t that the case?” she responded.
“Would someone who values honor overlook and condone their disciples’ misconduct?” I countered.
“Maybe you don’t know?” she suggested.
“That’s underestimating the subtlety of our Heavenly Blade Demon,” I replied.
“I’ve heard this before. You always speak as if you know Lord Heavenly Blade Demon well,” she remarked.
“I know not only about Heavenly Blade Demon but also about other sect leaders. As the son of the Heavenly Demon, it’s necessary to be informed,” I explained.
Ian widened her eyes, looking at me. She might wonder when I had conducted such investigations without her knowing.
“Why then does Heavenly Blade Demon allow the misdeeds of the disciples?” she asked.
“That’s…,” I hesitated, unable to disclose the true reason to Ian
.
So, I offered another explanation that she could accept.
“Because it’s convenient,” I said.
“What?” she questioned.
“It’s easier to handle greedy and selfish individuals than well-behaved disciples. The Heavenly Blade Demon has not chosen disciples for a long time, allowing them to compete against each other. Why? Because it’s easier to use them as disposable pawns. Just watch, Yangpo’s vacant position will be filled within a few days,” I explained.
“You’re quite terrifying, Heavenly Blade Demon,” she remarked.
“I’m more afraid for the disciples. Those who rush in knowing full well what kind of person their master is,” I said.
“I’m glad to have you as my master,” she said.
“Of course. Where else would you compare?” I replied. “Ian, how about a drink after so long?”
She looked at me with surprise.
“Why are you so surprised?” I asked.
“It’s not just been a while, it’s the first time,” she replied.
“The first time?” I questioned.
“Yes.”
Had we never had a drink together until now? What compelled her to throw herself into this for me?
“Let’s go. Let’s drink and be merry today!” I declared.
I took Ian to Magachon, a village formed around the sect, located in all directions from the main school. What once started as a small village where the families of the disciples lived had now grown into a bustling city.
I took her to the most expensive and finest tavern in Magachon.
“It’s a historic day, so let’s drink in a nice place,” I suggested.
“I’m fine with a small place,” she responded.
She seemed uncomfortable in crowded places. Wherever she went, all eyes would inevitably be on her, which must have been unpleasant.
To accommodate her, we entered a private room reserved for us in the tavern.
“What’s your tolerance like?” I inquired.
“I can’t drink much,” she admitted.
“Let’s see how much you can handle today. Don’t worry, if you get drunk, I’ll carry you,” I assured her.
“But… I’ll be heavy,” she protested.
“It’s okay. Look at this arm,” I flexed, showing off my bicep.
“It’s only half the size of mine,” she observed.
“I haven’t even started exerting myself yet!” I joked.
As it was our first drinking session together, I ordered plenty of good wine and food.
“I’ve never tried this dish before. And that one too,” she remarked.
“Try them all, and if something tastes good, we’ll order more,” I suggested.
“My stomach will be surprised,” she chuckled.
“Eating haphazardly will only make you gain more weight. You have to be a gourmet to lose weight,” I teased.
“Ah! I didn’t know that! I’ll keep that in mind,” she said.
But I knew. No matter what she ate, or even if she starved herself, her weight never seemed to change. That weight wasn’t gained from food.
Of course, she knew too. She was just saying that because she thought I didn’t know about the side effects, or perhaps it was a joke mixed with a hint of reproach… She had become an adult too early.
“In the future, we’ll learn together while enjoying delicious food,” I said.
Ian looked at me intently and asked, “Can you tell me the secret?”
“What secret? Cooking?” I replied.
“No, how people can change like this,” she clarified.
I chuckled lightly as I looked at her. “Why? Do you want to change too?”
“It’s not that, but…” she trailed off.
She emptied her glass. Who wouldn’t want to change? Deep within her heart, the image of her younger self would forever reside. In times of hardship, she would recall those days, making her struggles even more difficult.
“When you regain your original self, you won’t need such secrets. Everyone will admire you,” I remarked.
Accepting the drink I offered politely, Ian then asked, “Master, what are your plans for the succession race?”
Her question, which she had never asked before, indicated that she saw the possibility in me.
Raising my glass, I replied, “Only fate will decide!”
Ian smiled and lightly tapped her glass against mine. “May you win the Master’s heart!”
We drank together. Despite claiming she couldn’t handle alcohol well, Ian drank rather easily. Of course, there was a price to pay for making her tipsy. I had to carry her back when she became too drunk.
As we made our way back, she shouted from my back, “Don’t worry! I’ll protect you, Master. Just trust me!”
“I wasn’t worried at all, but hearing you say that makes me worry,” I joked.
“You should be worried! You have to worry. But don’t worry, I’ll protect you!” she insisted.
“Sure, no worries,” I replied, chuckling.
At that moment, someone shouted from a nearby building, “Who’s making all that noise?”
Looking at the man leaning out of the window, I said, “Look at me and see.”
“Who are you?” he asked.
“I’m Gongza of the Celestial Horse Sect,” I declared.
After a moment of staring blankly at me, a swift apology flew out like a flash of light. “Oh, I’m sorry. Master Gongza!”
The window closed faster than it had opened. Ian was asleep on my back.
I’m sorry for lifting you up so late.
Leaving her lying on the bed, I went outside and sat in the courtyard, gazing up at the moon. Now I realize that after the defeat in the Demonic Abyss, I was plunged into deep despair during my life in hiding. Regretting that I didn’t pursue the Great Regression Law, I was overwhelmed by the deep melancholy to the point where I couldn’t sustain life without striving for regression.
What if I hadn’t met Seo Jin? If I hadn’t known about the Great Regression Law? Eventually… would I have chosen death? Or perhaps, I would have gone in search of the Infernal Weapon, only to tragically perish at the hands of the followers who had been following me without even meeting me. Yes, that would have been the case.
During that time, lost in various thoughts, something flashed in the moonlight right next to me. When I slowly turned my head, a large blade was by my face, reflecting my tense expression. The rough, bony hand holding the blade showed signs of experience, indicating years of rough living. Beyond those wrinkles, sharp eyes glared at me. It was none other than the Heavenly Blade Demon. I was surprised because I didn’t expect him to come so suddenly.
He was pointing the sword at my neck as if to cut it off. The sword poised to strike was his unique weapon, the Annihilating Heaven Great Blade. Renowned as one of the top ten weapons in the martial world, the Annihilating Heaven Great Blade earned the nickname “Weapon Destroyer” because it shattered any weapon it clashed against.
The cold aura emanating from the Annihilating Heaven Great Blade enveloped the surroundings. The chilling cold made my whole body stand on end as if my breath would stop.
If that blade strikes my neck, can I avoid it?
I couldn’t easily come up with an answer. No matter how deep my insight gained from my previous life was, my current martial arts skills were overwhelmingly inferior. Just as tension was reaching its peak, the icy aura surrounding me disappeared in an instant.
The Heavenly Blade Demon smirked and poked my side with the end of the Annihilating Heaven Great Blade’s handle.
“What was that for?”
The meaning behind his question was why did I kill his disciple. Just moments ago, it felt like he was here to kill me, but now he was poking my side like a friendly neighbor.
“Because he acted like a scoundrel.”
At my indifferent reply, the Heavenly Blade Demon stared at me intently. Similar to my father but with a different gaze. While my father’s gaze was inscrutable, the Heavenly Blade Demon’s gaze was clear. It was hostility.
I saw a flicker of flames in his eyes.
Swish!
The sword that had been resting on the Heavenly Blade Demon’s knee bounced back up and aimed at my neck again.
“Should I cut off this head and see if it bothers the Master’s eyes? It’d be hurtful, wouldn’t it?”
The purplish-red aura flowing over the blade carried the owner’s will, saying, it may sound like a joke, but it’s not.
“I doubt my head would fit into his terrifyingly mangled eyes.”
As I took a step back, the aura flowing over the blade instantly disappeared towards the handle. Impressive. With such a skinny body, he could control such a powerful aura so freely.
This time, the Heavenly Blade Demon drew a long line on the ground in front of us with the Annihilating Heaven Great Blade, and then drew a vertical line about a foot away from the left end.
“This is where I, and this is where you are.”
The line divided the space in a proportion of six to one, indicating the ratio between us.
“What’s this?”
“It’s how much the Master values.”
The Heavenly Blade Demon himself was six, and I was one.
I drew a new line with my finger at about one-third of the way.
“Even so, he’s still your son. This side is him, that side would be the Elder.”
This time, I was seven, and the Heavenly Blade Demon was three.
He chuckled softly.
“We can test it out. If I take this ‘son’ to the Master, will he really kill me or spare me?”
“Don’t underestimate the Master’s paternal affection.”
“That’s why I suggested we test it.”
The Annihilating Heaven Great Blade moved slowly towards me again.
I pressed the side of the blade with my palm to block it from approaching my neck. The blade was cold. No matter how brightly the Heavenly Blade Demon smiled, this chill was his essence. Forgetting that would mean death.
“No need for a test. He have two sons, but one Elder”
The Heavenly Blade Demon laughed heartily.
“This one is not a scoundrel like you.”
“If your disciple resembled the Elder, he would still be alive.”
The Heavenly Blade Demon tapped my shoulder and chuckled.
“This disciple, this old man, has lived a lifetime of misfortune. So it’s best not to see each other often.”
With those words, the Heavenly Blade Demon disappeared. The body that had suddenly sprung up next to me fell far into the darkness.
As the Heavenly Blade Demon disappeared, I grimaced from my side. There was a purplish bruise where he had playfully jabbed with the handle of the sword earlier. It looked like a playful “tap-tap,” but the impact on me felt more like a “thud-thud.” The last tap on my shoulder felt the same.
“Damn it, you old bastard.”
I had remained tense throughout my interaction with him. Despite the fact that I had returned, the potential danger created by the variables always had to be taken seriously.
The fact that he repeated twice that he would go find Father holding my head meant that he might actually consider doing it.
At first glance, he might seem whimsical, but he was not. He was always thorough in his calculations. If he seemed whimsical, it was a calculated kind of whimsy. That’s why dealing with him was tricky.
I had plenty of information about him, but knowing about him didn’t necessarily mean I could handle him well. Information was just information; variables that could overturn this fragility could always arise.
“But why did he come looking for me?”
Was it a warning about killing his disciple?
No. As I told Ian, he wasn’t someone who valued reputation.
He came to see me. The performance on the stage of combat would have been impressive, and the wish to hunt me down would have felt special. And having cut down his own disciple, he would have felt the need to test me. He came to taste whether I was sweet or bitter. To see if I could be the successor.
“What taste was I to you?”
To me, he was spicy. Just a touch, but fiery. Spicy, but delicious.
“Was the Heavenly Blade Demon my first opponent?”
Maybe it was. It was fitting that I was sent back to a day of combat with the Heavenly Blade Demon’s disciple.
Perhaps my sword caught the eye of the heavens in particular.
