Absolute Regression - Chapter 9
The next day, Ian came to me with a puzzled look on her face.
“How did I get back yesterday?”
“I came back carrying you. You don’t remember how you got back?”
Ian’s cheeks turned red.
“Don’t lie. I wasn’t that drunk. I was heavy, wasn’t I? I’m sorry, my lord.”
“If I say it was light, then that would be a lie. But it wasn’t so heavy that you need to apologize. Look at these muscles!”
“Oh, your arms look even thinner when you flex like that.”
“Look at these rugged muscles properly!”
After exchanging banter like that, Ian bowed her head slightly.
“Thank you, my lord.”
“Let’s drink again next time.”
“Yes, my lord.”
As she turned to leave, she asked again.
“If I made any mistakes, please forgive me with a generous heart. Honestly, I don’t remember what I said.”
“You didn’t make any mistakes, so don’t worry. Oh, if you happen to make a mistake next time, I’ll grant you clemency.”
“Clemency? What’s that?”
“It’s the right to be forgiven even if you make a mistake or do wrong by me.”
“You’re giving me that? But I haven’t accepted it.”
I reached out my hand to her.
“A handshake.”
Ian took my hand with her large hand.
“There, I’ve issued it now.”
“Since you’re issuing it, can’t you issue it for a pack of ten? I’ll be following you for the rest of my life, so one won’t be enough.”
“No! Just one. So use it wisely!”
“Yes! My lord!”
Her eyes, smiling brightly, disappeared into the darkness.
If there’s someone who needs to be forgiven by in this life, it’s me. Who else would it be? You should give me fifty tickets for clemency…
That night, I sat alone practicing my qi emission.
While I was detecting three directions at once, a strand flying to the left detected someone.
I was deeply immersed in the fun of identifying someone through my qi. When I send out my qi and detect someone, I start by examining the opponent from head to toe. How tall are they, what weapon do they use, and what level of martial arts do they have.
This time, just as I was about to examine the opponent, right at that moment.
The opponent dodged to the side sneakily.
Thinking it might be a coincidence, I sent out my qi towards him. However, the opponent moved his body to the opposite side again, avoiding my qi.
“Surely he wouldn’t know to dodge on purpose?”
This thin and subtle qi emission was something the opponent could never detect.
Yet, the opponent seemed to sense my qi somehow and skillfully avoided it.
“Who could it be?”
Curious about the opponent, I continued emitting qi as I left the room.
I practiced emitting qi while moving. Of course, it required much more mental energy than emitting while still, but in real combat, I would often need to emit qi while on the move.
I sensed the opponent stepping back. I pursued him, as if trying to catch something elusive.
Finally, I arrived at the courtyard of my inner quarters.
The moment I confirmed the person standing there, I couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
“Father!”
The person who had come here with my qi was none other than my father.
“Well, well. You seemed tense, as if someone else had sensed your qi.”
“As if your qi is anything remarkable. Even the dogs sleeping under that wall over there could sense it.”
“Dogs naturally have good instincts, don’t they? But what brings you to my place?”
“It was on my way.”
Although he said so, it was undoubtedly true that he had come to find me.
“It’s truly fateful for us to meet like this, even by chance.”
“Enough with the chatter.”
“Yes!”
I closed my mouth and quietly followed my father’s gaze to the night sky.
After a moment, I asked, “When will you choose a successor?”
“In a hundred years. You all have a long way to go.”
“Make it a hundred days. I feel like I’ve done enough.”
“If that were the case, the Heavenly Blade Demon wouldn’t have come to see you.”
“How did you know?”
It was a private meeting between the two of us, yet Father knew. In other words, it meant he was keeping an eye on me. Well, he knew about my ordeal in the mountains, so it wasn’t surprising.
“After meeting you, the Heavenly Blade Demon came to see me immediately.”
“What did he say?”
“He hoped to punish you.”
“Me?”
I was taken aback by his unexpected words. Could it be that the Heavenly Blade Demon went to Father asking for punishment?
“It was unexpected. Someone who came to me after their disciple died wouldn’t make such a demand.”
“Why on earth would he do that?”
I pretended not to know, but I could guess the true intentions of the Heavenly Blade Demon. He wanted to test the relationship between Father and me. Whether Father would really punish me, and if he did, what kind of punishment it would be. He wanted to see if Father considered me as his successor.
“So you plan to punish me.”
“I have no grounds to punish you. That disciple of his is the one who deserves to die.”
“Creating grounds is all it takes.”
I drew my sword and made a long line on the ground. Then, drawing about ten feet away, I said,
“The Heavenly Blade Demon told me. This longer side represents how you see yourself. Did that reason come from this line?”
Instead of answering, Father asked back the question I had asked in the hunting ground.
“Who among the Eight do I trust the most?”
“Yes.”
Father answered it now.
“No one trusts anyone.”
I could understand. With this answer, Father simultaneously answered that the line drawn by the Heavenly Blade Demon wasn’t accurate.
“Which side are you on? Do you trust people or not?”
“It depends on who the person is.”
“How can you know what kind of person they are?”
“You can learn by spending time with them, can’t you?”
“That’s a foolish thought. The one thing you can never know is the human heart. Even if someone seems transparent, you should never think you understand them.”
Suddenly, Ian came to mind. I thought I knew her well, but it was like constantly discovering new aspects of her.
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Didn’t I tell you to uphold the principles of the sect?”
“Yes.”
“Throw away the nonsense about eradicating corruption. Tell me your honest thoughts.”
“Can I really speak honestly?”
“When have you ever lied?”
“Not exactly. But this answer might be considered rude.”
“Speak.”
“From some time ago, we… I think we lost our way in the dark arts.”
Father’s eyes trembled beneath me. At least, it wasn’t something to say in front of Father.
“What do you think magic is?”
“What I think magic is…”
After a pause, I revealed the long-pondered thought.
“I believe it’s the sect’s belief in striking down absolute evil.”
It was an unexpected answer, and Father looked at me with widened eyes.
“…The sect’s belief in striking down absolute evil?”
“I believe it’s not about factions, but about absolute evil.”
“Then what is it?”
“Absolute evil.”
Surely, the words I was about to say wouldn’t be easily accepted by Father. Nevertheless, I calmly expressed my thoughts to him.
“There exists in the world a despicable, vile, and wicked evil that humans cannot bear. It’s a malevolence so heinous that even demons would recoil in horror. While the faction’s justice and cooperation may be able to suppress small evils, I don’t think they can handle this absolute evil. Because the faction inherently embraces forgiveness. As long as they hold onto a heart that cherishes humans, how can they handle the evil that runs amok, having forsaken humanity? Father, staring at me, was concentrating on my words. It was the first time he had shown such focus. Perhaps deep down in Father’s heart, he was thinking these thoughts. -Wasn’t that absolute evil us? -No, Father. I hope our Celestial Demon Sect is not absolute evil. I will make sure it isn’t.
My words continued.
“As the only existence in the Murim capable of eliminating the vilest and most wicked evil in even more vile and wicked ways, I believe we must find our raison d’être here. Whether we are good or evil doesn’t matter. Sometimes we show the face of righteousness, and sometimes the face of evil. I believe that only when the faction faces an overwhelming evil that it cannot handle, and that evil kneels before us trembling, do we truly establish true magic. Only then will the martial world truly bow its head before the majesty of the academy. Only then will they ask us for help when they cannot solve problems themselves. If only the Celestial Demon Sect can save the martial world. That’s what I think magic is.”
I assertively claimed that Father had never once entertained such thoughts in his life. This wasn’t something I had learned or realized at the academy. It was something I had felt while wandering through the Central Plains throughout my life.
“If we don’t establish magic properly, we won’t last long. For us to live… we must punish ourselves.”
Even Father, skilled at hiding emotions, couldn’t conceal the shock of this moment. He was the kind of person who would reveal the slightest hint of falsehood by fluttering his face. But at this moment, Father showed no reaction at all. Even if the wind blew, the story would have unfolded ten times more.
Father was lost in deep thought. Though I’ve lived a longer life than Father, I couldn’t guess what he was thinking right now.
But one thing was certain.
Father and I had only regressed for a few days, but both he and I were undergoing a change in destiny. We were starting to steer toward a different future.
Eventually, Father broke the long silence.
“Do you still have any arrogance left?”
“No, not today.”
I chuckled nervously, scratching my head.
“I think I know why the Blade Demon came to ask me to punish you.”
“Why is that?”
Father’s confident eyes gleamed intensely.
“He saw something in you. So, he’s trying to test you through me.”
“He probably saw the potential for me to become the successor.”
“It could ruin the sect.”
“Whichever it is… that old man with the skull face sure has a keen eye.”
After staring at me for a moment, Father seemed to make a decision and briskly walked towards the inner courtyard.
“Follow me.”
Father led me to the deepest part of the Celestial Pavilion. It was a place I was familiar with.
A plaque hung modestly above the stone cave.
“Little Heaven Cave.”
I exclaimed in surprise to Father.
“You don’t mean to tell me we’re going in there, do you?”
This was a place for the future Celestials to train, a sort of training ground.
Normally, when a Celestial’s disciple or child entered for a test, they never returned.
You could enter at your own risk, but getting out wasn’t guaranteed. I heard that if you couldn’t pass the gate, you’d never leave there forever. The success rate was fifty percent. In fact, half of the descendants of Celestials who entered here lost their lives.
That’s why even my ambitious brother never mentioned wanting to enter here himself.
But to become a Celestial, you had to pass through here at least once. After all, everyone who became a Celestial had passed through here. In that sense, becoming a Celestial was one of the most extreme professions.
“I entered here when I was your age.”
“So how long did it take for you to come out?”
“Two months.”
“Oh my. You’re asking me to spend my shining youth in this dark and humid place?”
“Don’t be mistaken. It was two months for me. The average breakthrough time is three years.”
Father was evaluated as the Celestial with the best martial skills in history. It was possible because I inherited his blood, being his son.
“Father, why are you doing this to me?”
“Didn’t I just say? I intend to punish you.”
“Isn’t this punishment too harsh?”
“The disciple you killed will spend eternity in the ground.”
“But what about the cheers and applause he received from the people he tormented?”
But Father had already hardened his heart.
Father, are you really sending me to a place where I could die? Just because that old fox said so?
Suddenly, Father’s words about the poison dart in hunting came to mind.
Is it okay for your son to die? Or do you hope I come out stronger?
If I couldn’t come out alive, it would be punishment, but if I did, it could become a reward.
Or are you trying to protect me from the Blade Demon, like a thorn that has popped out of your pocket?
Because Father never revealed his true feelings, I couldn’t decipher his intentions.
As Father infused his unique essence into the stone tablet beside the stone cave, the stone door opened.
Creak.
With a look from Father that said, “No more complaints, just go in,” I didn’t resist anymore.
“Alright. I’ll come out faster than you, Father.”
Creak.
As the stone door closed behind me, Father smirked coldly yet slyly.
“Perhaps. But don’t die.”
