- Chapter 1 - Twin Crossing
In the palace’s beautiful imperial garden, Second Princess Chu Yan stood by the pool, wearing a gorgeous, colorful long dress. Lifelike butterflies were embroidered on her skirt, and a sweet smile curled at the corner of her mouth. Yet a trace of imperceptible gloom flashed in her eyes as she called out to Chu Yue, who was standing nearby, “Third Imperial Sister, come and see! There’s a rare golden carp in the pool!”
Chu Yue was dressed in a moon-white palace robe, her posture graceful, her eyebrows and eyes inherently gentle and dignified. Hearing Chu Yan’s shout, she was slightly stunned, and a trace of doubt appeared in her heart. This second imperial sister had always been at odds with her, openly and secretly targeting her on weekdays. But today, she was being so enthusiastic, which was truly abnormal.
The royal princess’s upbringing and etiquette made it impossible for her to refuse her sister’s invitation. She sighed softly, moved lightly, and slowly walked towards the edge of the pool. The fifth princess, Chu Rou, followed behind her like a shadow, her eyes flickering and her hands unconsciously tugging at the corners of her clothes.
“Where?” Chu Yue leaned over and peered into the pool, only to see clear water, fields of lotus leaves, and swaying lotus flowers, but no sign of golden carp. Just as her doubts deepened, a sudden, powerful shove came from behind, leaving her no time to react to the ambassador of power.
Chu Yue instantly lost her balance, her body lurching forward uncontrollably. In a panic, she instinctively reached out to grab something, her fingertips brushing against Chu Hua’s waist. With a sharp rip, she tore off the priceless jade pendant from the Second Princess’s belt.
The bone-chilling pool water engulfed her instantly. Her elaborate palace robes became unbearably heavy in the water, like a pair of merciless hands dragging her relentlessly downward. “Help… save me…” Chu Yue struggled desperately in the water, each cry swallowed by the unforgiving depths.
She looked fearfully toward the shore, only to see the cold, indifferent figures of the Second Princess and Fifth Princess. A smug, icy smile curled the Second Princess’s lips, while the Fifth Princess, though her face showed panic, remained rooted to the spot, making no attempt to call for help.
“Now let’s see how you’ll play the virtuous saint before Father Emperor,” the Second Princess’s frigid voice cut through the water like a winter wind, piercing Chu Yue’s ears.
Darkness, endless darkness, like an immeasurable net, completely enveloped Chu Yue.
Meanwhile, in the distant modern world, Jiang Tian was drowning in a quagmire of cyberbullying, her anguish unbearable. She stared at the screen as a tidal wave of venomous comments flooded in, her fingers trembling uncontrollably as she swiped through them. Each comment was like a sharp knife, stabbing mercilessly into her heart, leaving it dripping with blood.
“Does this talentless influencer even deserve to be famous?”
“Plastic surgery face—you can tell it’s fake at a glance.”
“Heard her private life is a mess, tangled up with multiple sugar daddies…”
Just a few months ago, she had been a dazzling star in the short video world, her good looks and joyful, comedic daily life earning her hundreds of thousands of followers. Each video easily garnered over ten thousand likes. But in the past two weeks, a sudden and relentless wave of cyberbullying had struck like a bombshell, shattering her life into pieces and plunging her mercilessly into the abyss of darkness. Compounding her misery, Ye Shuyu had publicly announced his girlfriend a month earlier, leaving her feeling suffocated by these crushing burdens.
“Tiantian, don’t look at those comments anymore,” Zhou Lecheng said, her face etched with worry as she carried two steaming cups of milk tea from the kitchen. She gently placed one cup in front of Jiang Tian and said softly, “They’re just keyboard warriors. They’re not worth your sadness.”
Jiang Tian forced a smile that looked more like a grimace than genuine happiness. She reached for the cup, but her mind was so distracted that her hand trembled, causing the cup to clatter to the floor. The milk tea quickly spread across her newly bought white dress, forming a glaring stain.
“Ah!” Jiang Tian shrieked in panic, frantically trying to wipe it off. But the more she rubbed, the larger the stain grew, and her composure completely shattered. Tears streamed down her face as she covered it with her hands, her shoulders shaking violently. The pent-up pain and resentment she had suppressed for so long poured out like a dam bursting.
“I need some air,” Jiang Tian suddenly stood up, her voice choked with sobs, grabbed her car keys, and rushed out.
“Tiantian! It’s pouring outside! Where are you going?” Zhou Lecheng chased her to the door, but only saw the elevator doors slowly closing, leaving her with a look of worry and helplessness.
The torrential rain pounded down, bean-sized droplets smashing against the windshield. The wipers frantically swiped back and forth, but they couldn’t keep up with the deluge, blurring her vision. Jiang Tian gripped the steering wheel tightly, her eyes vacant as she drove aimlessly, the venomous comments echoing endlessly in her mind. Why? She had only wanted to share her simple, happy life. What had she done wrong to deserve such baseless malice? Why did she love Ye Shuyu so much, treat him so well, and assume he knew her feelings, only to have him publicly announce his girlfriend?
A blinding flash of lightning tore through the inky night sky, followed immediately by a pair of headlights. Jiang Tian flinched violently, her hands instinctively jerking the steering wheel. The car lurched out of control, careening wildly toward the roadside like a runaway horse. With a deafening crash, the vehicle slammed into the guardrail. The airbags deployed instantly, and darkness swallowed Jiang Tian as she lost consciousness.
