- Chapter 3 - Leaving the Hotel for the First Time
The glass door outside had been smashed long ago, and all the paper and pens inside had been robbed as resources, leaving some stationery of little to no use, which probably no one wanted.
Others were accustomed to this sight. As soon as they stepped in, they behaved in an expert manner. Some began to bandage those injured in the battle and while the rest prepared lunch.
Bai You glanced at Ji Mingyuan, who had been silent since just now, and was a little worried: “Leader, do you want to eat?”
Ji Mingyuan glanced at the military can of food in his hand and refused concisely: “No, you can eat it.”
Loss of appetite for normal food was also a sequelae of pollution levels exceeding 90.
Someone in the team glanced in their direction.
Some of the mercenaries who had been working with Ji Mingyuan since the beginning of the apocalypse already knew that important fact. As a result, they fell silent and increased the intensity of their hand movements, as if they were venting their anger on something.
They could feel that their leader’s supernatural power had improved by leaps and bounds during the current period. Such a thing was sometimes not good news for the Polluters.
Especially for those whose pollution value had exceeded eighty.
It was more likely similar to a countdown to death.
Ji Mingyuan didn’t want to talk about it, so they decided to not mention it.
It was an unconditional belief to not talk about. However, when the pollution value reached ninety-five, even if Ji Mingyuan was not willing to report it, his bracelet which was bound to them would report it mandatorily.
When that would happen, they would no longer be reliable companions.
Although some mercenaries speculated that Ji Mingyuan’s pollution level might have hit ninety, no one even imagined that it had already reached a high risk value— ninety-four.
After everyone had finished their meal, Ji Mingyuan suddenly stood up: “There seems to be a school over there.”
Someone looked at the map and answred, “Well, it was a middle school before the End of the World.”
Ji Mingyuan said in a calm tone: “I’ll go over and take a look.”
Bai You looked surprised: “Leader, it’s too dangerous to be alone. Let me go with you…”
Before he could finish his words, he was stopped by another person in the team.
The man shook his head vaguely.
Everyone stopped talking, put down what they were doing, and stared at Ji Mingyuan.
Ji Mingyuan didn’t seem to feel the sudden heavy atmosphere in the air. He casually waved his hands at them and walked out of the stationery store with his long legs wrapped in black combat uniform.
And then slowly, he disappeared from everyone’s sight.
Bai You was a newcomer who had just joined their mercenary group. He didn’t react for a moment: “Why didn’t the leader take a gun at least?”
After saying this, the face of the person who had just stopped him darkened, and the other people who usually liked to joke with him remained silent at this moment.
Bai You’s eyes suddenly widened, and he finally understood what Ji Mingyuan’s sudden departure meant.
…
On the other side, the Hotel had been undergoing thoroughrenovations for past two days.
After spending two days in the Hotel, Wen Bei finally had a rough grasp of the structure of the entire Hotel.
Although it looked like a crumbling building ready for demolition, the condition was actually very different. Apart from the occasional creaking wooden floor, the hotel was still very solid.
Wen Bei was relieved. At least, he don’t have to worry about the building falling apart when he was asleep.
There were actually three floors in total, with a large elevator with stairs on both its sides.
However, Wen Bei could currently only go up to the second floor. The second floor was reserved for the employees. Only the Boss of the Hotel and its employees could go to the second floor. Wen Bei’s room was also on the second floor.
It was the largest room, but the furniture only included a bed, a television, a sofa and a large wardrobe. Fortunately, the bathroom and toilet in the room had all the toiletries he needed, and there was even a large bathtub.
The third floor needed to be unlocked.
The condition which needed to be fulfilled in order to unlock it was simple. The Hotel needs to entertain its first guest.
Wen Bei sat at the counter in the lobby on the first floor and was speechless for a while: “Who would come to this wilderness?”
Butler Rabbit gnawed on the carrot: “Isn’t there a promotional coupon in the novice gift bag? Give that a try.”
Wen Bei chose to use the propaganda roll without any hope.
Half an hour later, nothing happened.
Butler Rabbit coughed, picked up a new carrot and held it up to his mouth to change the subject: “Let’s eat.”
The carrots were the carrots that they had obtained through the novice gift pack.
There wa no food in the Hotel apart from the carrots. Thus, Wen Bei had been eating carrots for two days in a row.
This was not an unbearable thing for Wen Bei since he was a person who often went to bed hungry as a child. What made Wen Bei feel unbearable was that he could only eat the carrots raw.
Among the many activity rooms in the lobby on the first floor, there was obviously an area that belonged to the kitchen.
But he couldn’t get access to it.
It turned out that even the Hotel’s kitchen needed to be unlocked.
The condition to unlock it was obtaining the first recipe.
However, to obtain a recipe, one needs to have two or more recipe ingredients.
His carrots could only occupy one of the ingredient criteria.
He needed to find another ingredient from outside in order to meet the criteria.
The rabbit butler encouraged him: “You don’t belong to this world, so you won’t be polluted. As long as you go out, you will definitely find other ingredients.”
Wen Bei, who was a stranger to the apocalypse world, was not easily persuaded.
Butler Rabbit took out the restaurant’s menu and showed it to him: “As long as the kitchen is unlocked, we can sell every dish.”
A portion of dumpling soup, which was the easiest to unlock, could be sold for ten crystals.
An hour’s sleep in the hourly room on the first floor of the hotel only costed ten crystals.
Selling food and beverages was obviously a big source of income for hotels.
Butler Rabbit thought of more ways to persuade Wen Bei, but there was no need for that. Because, the next second, he saw Wen Bei, who was holding a carrot just now looking like he would never set a foot out of the hotel, standing at the door of the hotel with a backpack on his back.
He was holding the black dagger from the novice gift bag in his hand, and his black and white cat eyes were shining with determination, as if nothing could stop him from finding a way to make a fortune, oh not fortune but raw materials.
…
Although Wen Bei would not be contaminated, it would still be attacked by filth.
The biggest characteristic of filth was that they had a strong desire for destruction, and destruction had become their code of conduct. Especially for some creatures, even if the opponent was not edible, as long as they appeared in sight, they would find ways to attack.
The only equipment Wen Bei had on him was the backpack and the dagger, both of which were obtained from the novice package.
He had only used the black dagger to peel carrots, and had no general understanding of its specific sharpness.
But since he received it from the novice gift package, the quality was naturally supposed to be pretty good.
Butler Rabbit had told him that he was the steward of the Hotel and could not leave the Hotel casually. Thus, the rabbit did not follow him.
Wen Bei reasonably suspected that the Rabbit Butler was afraid of death.
It wasn’t a bad thing that the rabbit did not tag along because the weak rabbit would only hinder his path to wealth if he had come along.
Thus, Wenbei embarked on the road to find ingredients alone.
In order to prevent himself from getting lost, he determined his destination at a nearby middle school and planned to return after a short walk.
Although the strange vines covering the Hotel looked scary, Wen Bei realised that one wouldn’t be attacked by them as long as they weren’t touched.
This was the conclusion that he had arrived to after spending a whole day in observation the previous day.
He avoided the vines and successfully walked out of the area carefully without even being touching the vines by a piece of his clothes.
The sun shined down wantonly, and for the first time he saw clearly what the doomsday looked like.
The large tracts of plants spread out and the original appearance of the city was no longer visible. Occasionally, there were small filth creatures running through the jungle.
There was a fishy smell in the air, which created a completely different experience for Wen Bei after staying in the Hotel. The place was full of dangers and murderous traps.
With a foresight hundred times better than that of normal people, Wen Bei managed to run from the street to the gate of the middle school. However, hw was almost bitten into half by a passing filthy hamster.
The hamster seemed to be as big as two people. Its right cheek was bitten by something, and a big terrifying hole exposed its insides.
When Wen Bei saw it, it was holding a corpse and enjoying it, and a pale human hand had also fallenf out of the big hole in its cheek.
It had quickly picked it up again and gnawed at it. After discovering Wen Bei, it hid the uneaten corpses on its left cheek and immediately chased after him.
Just after walking two streets, he had a near death encounter. He realised that without having awakened any powers, he was like a living target walking on the road.
The hamster that was originally chasing him relentlessly stopped when it saw him running towards the gate of the middle school. The creature hesitated and gave up the pursuit. It showed its yellow fangs and roared a few times before retreating.
The filth had almost no IQ or reasoning. There was only one explanation as to why it would leave- there was a far more terrifying filth hidden in the middle school.
Wen Bei looked back at the open door of the middle school and muttered: “Why…..”
After saying that, he grasped the black dagger and stepped in. His eyes, which seemed to have a tiny stream of light, were calm at the moment, as if he was not the prey, but a confident hunter.
He walked through the back door of the school and had to walk up a gentle slope to see the playground. When he saw the playground, he immediately understood why the hamster was unwilling to enter.
The playground was densely covered with white spider silk, and there were clusters of white eggs, five or six of which were stuck together to form an incubation nest.
And there wasn’t just one such nest, but hundreds. The entire playground was covered with such hatching nests!
Wen Bei, who never had any expression even while watching horror movies, frowned tightly at this moment.
He cautiously approached the nearest nest of spider eggs. Each egg had four familiar depressions on it.
Wen Bei held his breath and observed, and his scalp instantly became numb.
Because when he looked at the depressions together, he could clearly distinguish the distribution of human facial features. Each of the eggs had a vaguely visible human face!
One didn’t have to be a fool to know that the spider eggs couldn’t move.
He took a step back, planning to avoid the white eggs and directly walked to the dormitory area to take a look.
When he had entered the school, he had glanced at the map at the guard booth and written down the layout of the entire school.
The canteen was the closest to the dormitory. There could be some leftover things in there. Everything would be more than fine if he managed to find something useful, even some expired flour would be very helpful.
Wen Bei calmed down and walked down another path.
The path was full of white spider silk, and he chose to step on it only when there was no way to avoid it.
