- Chapter 30 - Captain Lan
The last compartment was a utility room, which was filled with mops and other tools. The girl had fallen on it and all the cleaning tools had been dyed red.
Even though she was completely unrecognisable, Wen Bei still recognized her at a glance as the girl who visited the factory with him yesterday.
She was only sixteen years old.
Before the apocalypse, she should have been at the age of going to school and acting like a spoiled child in front of her parents’ arms.
Wen Bei’s face turned gloomy. He had rarely been that angry.
Before he could think of his next move, another person entered the toilet. At a glance, he saw Wen Bei standing by the compartment motionless, and he couldn’t help but curiously approached: “Are you new here? What are you looking at?”
The moment he walked in, his pupils shrank sharply and he screamed: “Again, another person has died!”
…
Soon the lawful army arrived, led by a man who looked to be about thirty years old. He looked very elegant, with two small devil-like horns protruding from his forehead due to deformation.
His eyes revealed a sharpness that was inconsistent with his appearance, and he seemed to be able to see through people at a glance.
”Captain Lan, I am not the first witness, he is.” The employee who had screamed earlier to attract everyone pointed at Wen Bei and said loudly.
His voice was trembling: “Can I go back to work?”
The man known as Captain Lan raised his eyebrows and glanced at Wen Bei: “New to the base?”
It could be said that he was a man with very vicious eyes.
Wen Bei calmly said: “Yeah.”
He looked a little too calm, which was a sharp contrast to the trembling man beside him.
Captain Lan laughed inexplicably and looked at the employee who had just spoken: “You are so brave, it is not easy for you to survive for such a long time in the apocalypse.”
The employee who was ridiculed felt a little embarrassed. He tried his best to whisper to the person next to him: “I’m just an ordinary person. What’s wrong with being timid? Isn’t protecting us what they, the polluters, should do?”
He spoke in what he thought was a quiet voice, but he forgot that all indicators of polluters were higher than ordinary people, even their hearing was at a different level from the norms.
The several soldiers following Captain Lan looked a little dissatisfied, upon hearing the man’s words.
Wen Bei, who was standing aside, took the minor disputes into consideration.
It seemed that just as he had expected, there was not only a huge gap between the rich and poor, but also conflicts between polluters and ordinary people.
It was indeed inevitable.
Captain Lan seemed to be the most indifferent. He made a move: “Come with me to give a statement.”
Wen Bei was a little surprised.
The process was actually similar to the system followed by police before the apocalypse.
Captain Lan seemed to see his doubts and asked with a half-smile: “Do you know how many people have died in the Snowflake Factory in the past two weeks?”
Wen Bei shook his head.
Captain Lan’s expression became serious: “Including this girl, fifteen people in total.”
There were only a few people working in the factory, but fifteen people had already died in just half a month.
If it were an ordinary murder case, it might not have attracted much attention in the apocalyptic world where killing each other was far too common.
But the serial murder case was different. When the external threat was serious, the case had to be controlled well in order to avoid panic among the public inside the base. If the murderer was not found within a day, it would turn into a clear threat for the Lawful Army.
When Wen Bei followed them, he happened to see the woman who had asked the girl to follow herself the previous day.
She was in tears, looking at the girl’s body wrapped in white cloth, she was just like her daughter whom she was unable to protect at the beginning. Unexpectedly, she had still failed to protect the innocent girl.
The woman cried quietly, but the people around her resonated with her cry. The surrounding which was noisy just a moment ago suddenly became much quieter.
Almost all people who had survived in the apocalypse had lost relatives and friends.
”It must have been the polluters.”
”What, a polluter? Filthy…”
”Shh! Don’t mention this. Are you willing to die?”
Captain Lan, who had been unresponsive, sharply turned around after hearing the bystander’s words and glanced at the people who had just spoken with clear warning in his gaze.
The coercion from the high-level polluter spread out, causing those people to shrink back in fear.
It was just a small episode, but Wen Bei noticed that the faces of the soldiers became much gloomier.
It wasn’t until he finished giving his statement that the person performing the autopsy obtained the specific time of the girl’s death.
It was midnight last night.
Captain Lan looked at Wen Bei: “What were you doing last night?”
Wen Bei: “I have been sleeping in the guest house, and I have roommates to prove it.”
His suspicion was minimal.
Not only was he an ordinary person without special powers, but he was also a newcomer who had just entered the base.
When the serial murders had occurred, he had not even entered the base.
But as the first witness, he still had to go through the process.
Captain Lan asked a few more questions and planned to let Wen Bei go back first.
When Wen Bei finally left, he couldn’t help but turn around and ask: “Can I take the liberty of asking a question?”
Captain Lan smiled: “Excuse me.”
He returned to his original elegant appearance.
Wen Bei: “Why were you angry just now?”
Captain Lan paused for a moment, and the polite smile in his eyes faded a little: “The word filthy… It’s an insulting word.”
After saying that, seeing that he obviously didn’t mean to explain in depth, Wen Bei said sorry and then slowly walked out of his sight.
…
After something like that happened, Wen Bei’s plan to visit the Snowflake Factory had to be interrupted.
He simply returned to his room in the guest house.
Unexpectedly, by chance, he met Ruan Tiantian once again.
He was at the door chatting with a man who looked mediocre and had yellow teeth due to mutation.
When the man smiled, all the yellow teeth in his mouth were exposed, and there was a foul smell.
Ruan Tiantian almost felt sick to his stomach, but it was his business and he could only continue to laugh.
But he didn’t expect that Wen Bei would return suddenly, and he didn’t expect that as soon as Wen Bei came over, the man who was touching his little hand and calling him a sweetheart would suddenly give his full attention to him.
The look of coveting was like a leprous looking at the pure white swan and wanting to stick to it.
Until Wen Bei entered his room and closed the door, he couldn’t move his eyes and opened and closed his mouth: “Tiantian, who is that?”
Ruan Tiantian was just about to get angry when he suddenly had a bad idea: “He is just a pretty boy who is kept by a polluter.”
As soon as the man heard the word “kept”, he suddenly had many thoughts in his heart: “I am willing to give a lot of crystal stones, can I make him follow me?”
Ruan Tiantian had never seen him look so worthless. He was so jealous that he was going to go crazy but he pretended to be hesitant at the same time: “But his current backer seems to be very powerful.”
”Would a powerful person live in a guest house?” The man obviously didn’t believe it, and his inner arrogance was easily aroused by Ruan Tiantian.
Ruan Tiantian encouraged him to harass Wen Bei without leaving any trace.
As soon as the man was complimented, he immediately didn’t know what the heavens and earth were like. He thought of the stunning beauty he had just seen when Wen Bei passed by.
There seemed to be countless ants gnawing at him inside.
He couldn’t help but raise his hand to knock on the door.
Ruan Tiantian was overjoyed when he saw it. He hurried back to his room, locked the door, and pretended that the matter had nothing to do with him.
Wen Bei did not open the door completely. He only opened a small crack and looked at him indifferently through the crack: “Is something wrong?”
Man: “Isn’t it comfortable to live here?”
Wen Bei glanced at him inexplicably, but still didn’t realise what he meant.
Only when he noticed his lustful and evil eyes did he realise what the man’s intentions were.
Sure enough, the man continued to talk shamelessly: “I have a three-bedroom house in this base. If you are willing to follow me, you can move out of this dilapidated house, and I can also pay you every month… ..”
”Pay for what?”
A cold voice sounded from behind him.
Huang Ya hadn’t realised the seriousness of the problem yet, so he turned back: “Who the hell are you…”
Before he could finish speaking, the moment he looked into those scarlet eyes, he suddenly silenced himself like a duck being strangled.
At that moment, he even thought he saw an evil ghost crawling up from hell.
Qiu Tin repeated word for word: “What can you pay?”
Without waiting for his answer, he continued: “Your life?”
A ring of black metal-like material suddenly locked around his throat and lifted him up.
The man’s toes could no longer touch the floor, and his face instantly turned pale.
At the moment when he was about to roll his eyes and faint, Qiu Tin moved his fingertips, and the circle of black material let go of him.
The man retched, almost vomiting out the acidic water in his stomach.
He gasped for fresh air and even stuck out his tongue.
But before he could take a breath, the black circle locked his neck again.
After repeating it, Huangya lost even the slightest strength to resist, his fingers twitched, and his eyes were dark due to the squeeze.
Qiu Tin was like a bad hunter teasing his prey, with a slight curve in his mouth, but there was no smile in his eyes.
He stood there relaxedly, as if he was not pushing a person back and forth to the edge of death.
