Chapter 80 – “Be Good.”
Wen Bei withdrew his gaze from the corpse and looked at the girl again.
Although she was a little dirty, she still looked pretty, with no obvious deformed features. Her hair was short and somewhat messy pink, and there was something like pink scales under her right eye that was faintly visible in the sunlight. She was not very old, probably around sixteen at most.
This degree of distortion is common only to ordinary people.
She was wearing too little just now, and Wen Bei didn’t look at her out of politeness. Only now did he notice that she didn’t have any detection ring on her.
Ji Mingyuan had told him that the detection ring was a popular item and was generally available in all registered safe areas.
Wen Bei asked directly: “Where is your detection ring?”
The girl was stunned for a moment, her eyes were very innocent: “What is that?”
‘She didn’t even know about the detection ring?’
Wen Bei: “Where are you from?”
The girl scratched her tangled hair and said, “He and I ran away from the same Yoshi Village, and he said he wanted to take me away with him.”
Due to their isolation, some small villages would form self-contained safe zones in the early days of the apocalypse. Although most of them would not last more than two years, it is not completely ruled out that some villages were lucky enough to have survived until now and to not have been discovered and registered by the base.
Wen Bei had heard Ji Mingyuan talk about similar examples several times. Most of the people in these “safe zones” had no idea of the existence of the base, let alone seeking asylum. Some villages even thought that the whole world had been destroyed and they were the only ones left.
When Ji Mingyuan was on an outdoor mission, he had to register and manage these “safe zones” that were discovered later. He found that these places all had one characteristic, that is, they hid some unknown secrets and most of them were xenophobic.
The safe zones that were discovered early on felt very excited and happy when they learned that a base had been built outside and that they could get some emergency shelter as long as they registered at the base. Their desire to survive skyrocketed, and it was impossible for them to become xenophobic.
It was different in the later stages. The independent safe zones in the later stages could survive for such a long time without being discovered. They must have unique means of preserving their lives. These things made them afraid of contact with the outside world.
Therefore, not every safe zone is willing to be registered by the base.
If this is where the Yoshi Village she mentioned came from, it would explain why neither she nor the male corpse was wearing a detection ring.
The girl looked up at him. She seemed a little afraid of Qiu Tin and preferred to talk to Wen Bei, who seemed to have a gentle personality. Her voice was also very small: “Can I go with you?”
It is an inevitable instinct for social animals to seek out powerful beings within the species to follow.
If they leave her there alone, she probably wouldn’t survive more than two days.
Wen Bei thought for a moment: “Well, but only you can follow us, he can’t.”
He pointed to the dead body.
The girl hesitated for a moment: “But he is my good friend, and he gave me his last bottle of water. He is a very good man.”
She said the last sentence with a very firm tone.
It was common to encounter a few mentally ill people in the end times.
Wen Bei did not show any surprise. He just walked forward and took a closer look at the body. The man died of thirst. Next to the body was an empty mineral water bottle without a drop of water in it.
Even though the little girl drank the last bottle of water, she looked thirsty for a long time. If she had not met them, she would probably have ended up like the male corpse.
He retreated calmly and asked, “Why did your good friend take you away from Yoshi Village?”
She shook her head slowly. “I don’t know. He suddenly said last night that he wanted to play a game with me. He said it was called… running away.”
As if she found it amusing, she pursed her lips and smiled slightly.
Wen Bei: “Can I ask your name?”
Fang Huahua: “Just call me Huahua.”
Wen Bei followed suit and introduced himself to Qiu Tin: “Hua Hua, do you want to choose to go with us?”
He didn’t have a savior complex and respected other people’s choices.
If Fang Huahua insisted on staying with this “friend”, the most he could do was leave her some water and food.
Fang Huahua thought for a while, then she looked back at her friend who had been silent and asked for his opinion in a low voice.
Naturally, no one paid attention to it.
Fang Huahua showed a little disappointment on her face. She seemed to have lost sight of the concept of death. She naively thought that her friend simply ignored her.
So she turned around and looked at Wen Bei: “I want to go with you, can you be my new friend?”
After standing outside for a while, Wen Bei was a little wilted by the sun, and the blush on his originally fair face became more obvious, like a porcelain doll that would melt at any time. He agreed to Fang Huahua’s naive words, and after making sure that she would catch up, he got back into the car.
Qiu Tin looked at him with some displeasure in his eyes, of course this emotion was directed at Fang Huahua.
Wei Bei had already thought about it. The man quickly and sensibly stuffed the task into Wen Bei’s arms.
The temperature in the car dropped a lot because of the cool air emitted by the tail. Wen Bei sighed comfortably, hugged the tail again, and let the tip of the tail rub against his soft face.
Fang Huahua got a new bottle of water while sitting in the back seat. She was so happy that she drank it in big gulps. She then took the bread handed to her by Wen Bei and did not look uneasy at all because of Qiu Tin’s cold look at her.
The car continued to move forward. Qiu Tin drove with one hand while looking sideways: “Can I have a drink?”
He was referring to the water that Wen Bei now had in his hands.
Wen Bei had just finished drinking, and his lips were still moist and looked kissable. He stopped twisting the bottle cap and handed the water to him again.
Qiu Tin drank it all in one breath, with no expression on his face, but his tail twisted around in the young man’s arms excitedly.
Wen Bei touched the scales on the tail. The cool feeling made him reluctant to let go in the scorching heat. It was like jade of extremely fine texture, but a little harder.
For some reason the road ahead collapsed, so they had to take a detour.
They stopped to rest once more. Qiu Tin looked at Fang Huahua, a hint of coldness flashing in his red eyes: “It would be too troublesome to let her stay.”
After being alone on the road with Wen Bei for a few days, he couldn’t help but want to strangle Fang Huahua with his tail when he saw her.
Qiu Tin had never been a good person. Wen Bei had no doubt that he could really do such a thing. He rubbed his brows and subconsciously tapped the tip of his tail as if to comfort him: “Be good.”
The tone was very much like someone who was comforting a small pet at home, but the tall man in front of him with a violent look on his face was obviously not a “small pet” at all.
What was strange was that with such a subtle movement, the man was like a large cat with its neck grabbed. He was dissatisfied but also quieted down, licking his paw pads and staring at his prey.
Fang Huahua was teasing a strange turtle nearby. There were strange patterns painted on its back, and its eyes had been gouged out for some reason. There were also pieces of unknown meat hanging from its mouth, making it look like it had just had a full meal.
Perhaps because of this, it did not attack Huahua immediately, but the thoughts of the filth were unpredictable, and it might suddenly bite off Fang Huahua’s fingers at any time.
Fang Huahua: “Why is there paint on the turtle’s back?”
Wen Bei took a look and pulled her away: “This is a pet turtle from before the end of the world. Some unscrupulous vendors would paint patterns on the turtle’s back to attract customers.”
It was just that this turtle was lucky enough to survive, and because of its deformity, it had not changed its shell for five years, and some of the pigment on its shell remained after being exposed to wind and sun.
Fang Huahua seemed to be thinking about something, with a look of pity in her eyes: “How pitiful.”
After saying that, she started staring at a big flying butterfly.
Wen Bei: “That kind of butterfly will ride on your face and suck your blood.”
Fang Huahua pouted.
In such hot weather, Wen Bei suddenly wanted to eat chilled watermelon.
He leaned against Qiu Tin and stroked his tail nonchalantly: “I should plant some watermelons in the back hills.”
Qiu Tin: “Yeah.”
Wen Bei glanced at him and found it a little funny: “You should say that it’s not right. Watermelon has a lot of water but it’s not filling. There’s limited space in the back hills so why not plant more potatoes that are filling?”
Qiu Tin lowered his head, a little puzzled: “You want to eat watermelon. This reason is enough.”
As if his heart skipped a beat, Wen Bei was silent for a moment, then stood up straight, as if he hadn’t heard anything: “Let’s go, keep driving, we’ve taken a detour and are going to waste time again.”
Wen Bei was still thinking about how he should leave Fang Huahua alone in a safe area after dark and then go back to the Hotel to rest. Unexpectedly, he didn’t even have a chance to think about it. They suddenly encountered a roadblock – someone put up a protective net on a small road ahead!
Due to the distortion of the surrounding trees, this road, which was originally a highway, was now only wide enough for one car to pass through. Unfortunately, even this small gap had been deliberately blocked.
This used to be a highway, and the fence looked like it had been specially reinforced. Judging from the scratches on the ground, it could be judged that it was definitely placed here recently to block the road.
He had heard before that some car repair shops used to spread nails at their doors, and the scene now seems to be similar to that.
Fang Huahua, who had been sitting quietly in the back seat, suddenly spoke up: “It’s Yoshi Village’s brothers and sisters.”
Wen Bei was stunned for a moment: “What?”
He knew that judging from the strength of Fang Huahua and the “friend” who died of thirst, they should have just walked not far from Yoshi Village, but he didn’t expect that he would run into them by car by such a coincidence.
For a moment he couldn’t figure out whether he was lucky or unlucky.
The only thing that was certain was that the other party didn’t seem to have much kindness in mind, and Fang Huahua had just said words like “escape”.
Wen Bei decided to temporarily consider his luck as bad.
They had to stop the car. If they forced their way through, even the modified front end of the car would be flattened.
As soon as the car stopped, a group of people rushed out from behind the tree trunks on both sides.
They were all wearing tattered clothes, holding weapons in their hands, and were aggressive: “Get out of the car!”
Fang Huahua shrank her neck and said, “My brothers and sisters are very fierce. Please don’t get out of the car.”
Wen Bei looked at the blood stains on their weapons with a calm expression: “Ah, really?”
He winked at Qiu Tin, indicating that he could deal with it in any way he wanted.
Receiving the gaze, Qiu Tin slowly let go of the steering wheel. He pushed open the car door leisurely, a murderous look flashed in his eyes, and the corners of his lips suddenly curled up.
The anger that had nowhere to vent found a source of venting.
