After the Lord of the Abyss Awakens - Chapter 26.1
Cat…Was this really a cat?
Impossible!
Andre was literally frightened.
His system judgment flashed for an instant, showing level 23 clearly hanging above the gray cat’s head. It was just a small magical beast, not even able to break his skin.
But in that instant, his hair stood on end. He immediately retreated several steps, staring intently at the cat and the young man in black.
The young man had delicate features, a rare appearance that might have come from the East or North. His short, scattered hair was neatly trimmed, giving people a very fresh and comfortable feeling. His temperament was gentle, with a unique friendliness. Anyone who saw him at first glance would likely feel goodwill towards him.
The young man was carrying a small basket in his left hand, with a black bird inside. For warmth, some cotton cloth had been placed in as well. His right arm was holding the gray cat, his movements natural and ordinary, extremely casual. He looked like an ordinary passerby from any angle.
However, Andre’s heart was pounding. He felt this young man was definitely not ordinary!
Think about it, who would go out carrying the God of Darkness?
Would you? Would you dare? Could you?
Even he couldn’t think of such a subversive act! This could be recorded in history!
Andre’s inner thoughts were in turmoil, especially when the gray cat suddenly broke the silence and yawned.
This cat actually dared to yawn carelessly in front of him, a level 94!
Andre’s pupils trembled.
It – He was definitely not a cat, but an abyss species! Those trademark emerald eyes– there weren’t many species in the abyss that could make him so wary. Excluding those below level 90, he immediately thought of–an Abyss Lord.
This cat might well be the transformed shape of some Abyss Lord!
Andre’s whole body shook.
One couldn’t blame Andre for losing composure, because he had truly never seen such a scene before. His mind temporarily couldn’t process it.
If someone appeared before you with a god in one hand and an Abyss Lord in the other, could you react immediately?
As Andre was inexplicably silent, the black bird trembled. Not from fear, but because it had once been mortally wounded by the other party. Once close to them, the curse that had destroyed its divine body would frantically act up, causing it to uncontrollably shake by instinct.
The black bird’s movement alerted Xiu Si.
Xiu Si had already felt something was off about the person opposite. Looking down, he saw the black bird in the basket actually trembling, seeming very afraid of the person across from them.
This reaction could only mean one thing.
Xiu Si of course realized that the black bird must have been seriously injured by the other party. Who would have thought they’d run into each other here?
The other person wasn’t a pure magician, because pure magicians were rarely this muscular. He likely practiced other professions as well.
But regardless of profession or identity, torturing an animal in the middle of the night was definitely not something a good person would do.
Xiu Si’s eyes grew cold. From a distance, he asked directly. “Did you do this?”
Andre paused, outwardly calm but extremely wary inside.
This person had saved the God of Darkness and was walking around the Imperial City holding an Abyss Lord. Who exactly was he? What did he want to do?
Andre hesitated, but his system judgment showed the other was only level 25! And just an ordinary human at that.
How could a level 25 human accomplish something like this? Forget about an Abyss Lord, even the God of Darkness wouldn’t allow a level 25 human to carry them around like this.
While Andre was still frantically thinking, the young man stared at him and said solemnly. “Was it you who hurt him?”
“I…”
Andre inexplicably felt as if he was being accused of a crime. Under the gaze of those black eyes, his heart trembled with fear, instinctively feeling several traces of terror from the very core of his being.
He wanted to say “So what if I did?” He not only wanted to hurt him, but also steal his divine core and kill him. But his throat felt as if it had been bitten by a venomous insect, painfully numb, unable to utter even a single syllable.
Andre also realized that the person was angry. His cold gaze fixed on him, the terrifying look almost enough to kill.
He was born rebellious, challenging authority. Facing anyone – kings, heroes, even gods, even the primordial gods – he had never feared, only wanting to frantically destroy and replace them. But this person – he couldn’t understand.
Could it be that the other had hidden his strength, and was actually far beyond level 25?
But Andre had exhausted his level assessment ability, and could still only determine that this person was – just level 25! Ordinary in every way, showing not the slightest trace of extraordinariness. Yet how could this person casually carry two god-level beings? It was too bizarre.
Andre was too shocked. In a matter of seconds, he ransacked his knowledge, but still couldn’t comprehend the person before him.
“Yes…”
He finally spoke, suppressing his complex emotions, his voice trembling. Even he found it hard to believe. Who was he? A member of the great Freedom Alliance, whose creed was to rebel against and destroy everything. How could he be so wary of an ordinary person judged to be only level 25!
The other silently looked at him, thoughts unknown, perhaps contemplating his demise. Finally, the other glanced at him, brushing past. The casual footsteps sounded like midnight bells, solemn and majestic, terrifyingly august, echoing in his mind step by step, making his head buzz incessantly, freezing all the blood in his body.
Andre’s whole body stiffened. He turned with great effort, only to see that person walking away from him.
The gray-furred, emerald-eyed cat lay on that person’s shoulder, staring straight at him, suddenly smiling.
Andre’s hair stood on end, feeling he had been targeted. Only two choices remained: fight the other to the death, in broad daylight in the crowded Imperial City. But the other was an Abyss Lord – what were his chances of victory?
Or flee, as far away as possible.
This student of Matros was no ordinary person. He was strange–very strange.
Andre thought frantically, his fists clenched. Then he suddenly realized: the other had left without doing anything to him. Didn’t that mean the other might also be wary of him?
Yes, he had the God of Darkness’s divine core in hand. That was a primordial god’s divine core. The other must have been wary, otherwise why would he let him go?
However, just as Andre’s mouth curved into a smile, the space around him suddenly distorted.
At this moment, the gray cat lay on Xiu Si’s shoulder, turning its head back, lowering its gaze, and asking the bird through thought transmission. “It was that guy, right? The one who stole your divine core.”
The black bird, unaware of what had happened in the corridor earlier, finally breathed a sigh of relief once they were far away. Looking at the cat’s eyes through the gaps in the basket, it replied. “Yes, it was him. I never imagined he’d deliver himself to our doorstep. Do I actually have a luck buff? I offended the Goddess of Fortune before, thought she’d never give me a buff again in this lifetime.”
Gods are all genderless, or rather, the gender of gods is their divinity. The reason goddesses are called goddesses is because they appear more often in female form. Human historians recorded this, passed it down, and it spread widely, forming a fixed impression.
Gray cat: “It’s probably unrelated to the Goddess of Fortune. That guy came looking for Father, because Father is ‘Matros’s student’. It doesn’t have much to do with you, otherwise he wouldn’t have been so shocked by your presence. But he seemed quite ordinary. You were reduced to this state by someone like that? How useless. Today’s gods are too inferior.”
“What did you say?!”
The black bird was indignant. “He tricked me! It’s different from you Abyss Lords. We’ve been studied for thousands of years! Almost all information about us gods has been thoroughly researched. If they couldn’t defeat us with that, it would only mean they’re inferior. Don’t underestimate thousands of years of human effort. Humans are very powerful too, you know!”
The gray cat was amused, especially by the bird’s self-righteousness. It said, “Do you remember you’re a god? Now you’re praising humans?”
The black bird sighed. “I’m just telling the truth. I’ve been reduced to this state. Should I rage impotently and shout ‘Mere humans, you insects dare to harm me’? Hey, that’s outdated. I’m not like the God of Light and his followers. I’m a god who can progress. I know there’s a reason this era is called the Humans Era.”
“Impotent rage” was a phrase brought to this world by heroes. It had spread worldwide thousands of years ago. It’s said that many people couldn’t understand it at first, but it became more widely used later.
The gray cat blinked, suddenly smiling. “Wow, you make sense. By the way, I’ve researched magic to counter you gods. I just remembered, I wrote a magic formation to counter you, and even wrote theories and practices on how to destroy gods, called ‘100 Ways to Destroy Gods Before Birth’? The author was Macarona, another pseudonym of mine, haha.”
The black bird was stunned. “F**k! So you were the culprit?”
The gray cat rubbed its paw, its feline eyes glancing at him, seeming to think he was a country bird shocked by the city. It said, “What’s so strange? What I’ve done isn’t even a tenth of what my elder sibling Agares has done. What’s wrong with an Abyss Lord researching magic?”
The black bird choked, because of course it knew Agares’s great name. After awakening, it had specially supplemented its knowledge of this era’s history, only to find that both human history and the histories of other races were filled with Agares’s great name.
Hidden Sage, Abyss Lord, God of Truth, Lord of Dreams, Creator of the All-Race Level System, Constructor of the Continental Subspace Defense System… and so on, too many titles to remember. Agares’s greatness could be said to transcend race. You couldn’t find another being with more achievements.
Thinking of this, the black bird was even more shocked. “Eh, wait, Agares is actually your sibling? Does that mean all you Abyss Lords are siblings?”
The gray cat proudly said, “Basically all are my siblings, because those who aren’t siblings are dead. The Abyss is our territory, Father’s backyard. We’ll welcome Father back sooner or later.”
Before them, of course there were other Abyss Lords, but they later died at their hands.
After that, Abyss Lords naturally became equivalent to them.
After hearing this, the black bird felt its brain buzzing. Before this, it couldn’t have imagined to this extent! It asked somewhat foolishly. “Then, then your father is… one person?”
This was practically nonsense.
The gray cat nodded. Apart from their siblings, almost no other beings knew this, because they hated each other and would never reveal their kinship.
The gray cat pointed its paw at the bird and said, “Now you know.”
The black bird shuddered. “I know your secret now. You won’t kill me to silence me, will you?”
The gray cat revealed a fierce smile, as if it really wanted to kill the bird, but then restrained itself and said seriously, “We won’t do that, because Father wants to save you.”
The black bird paused, feeling a chill inside. It noticed that when the Abyss Lords weren’t in cat form, they were fine, but once in cat form they became particularly cat-like. Ah, it must be their physical form influencing their thought patterns.
Come to think of it, its own brain was a bit bird-like now too.
The gray cat stared at it. “So you understand now, Father’s importance to us.”
As it spoke, it suddenly released intimidating magical power, carrying a strong warning.
As soon as the words fell, the black bird’s feathers stood on end, its pupils trembling slightly.
Of course it understood now. That person was actually the creator of all current Abyss Lords!
As the God of Darkness, its memory stretched unimaginably far, yet in such a long history, it couldn’t find such a being.
Even the primordial gods could at most create eight archangel-level beings. Yet this person had created dozens, and even shaped its nemesis into them.
How was this accomplished? Who exactly was he?
Could someone capable of such feats still be called human?
The black bird’s wings shook, shedding a few more feathers. It felt that even if it hadn’t died from its severe injuries, it might die from shock.
No way, was it going to become the first god in history to die from shock?
Gray cat: “I see you understand. After you’re revived, don’t cling to Father. We siblings are numerous enough, we can’t allow one more. Got it?”
The black bird’s eyes flickered. It didn’t answer immediately, folding its small wings, unclear whether it was nodding or shaking its head.
It asked carefully. “Wait, can you help me deal with that undead? My divine core is in his hands. My authority is very useful, it can surely help your Father.”
The gray cat glanced at it, seemingly unconcerned.
The black bird was on tenterhooks, never having felt so anxious in its life. But it couldn’t give up. This was about its life!
So its black eyes stared steadily into the gray cat’s eyes.
The gray cat’s emerald eyes flickered, glancing at its Father’s profile. It knew Father had just been angry. Anyone who made Father unhappy had to die – this was a truth that should be written into the world’s rules! Retrieving the black bird’s divine core? That was just incidental.
The gray cat lowered its gaze and said, “Don’t worry, Morax has already come. He’s an astronomy enthusiast.”
Really? That guy who seemed to have a bad temper?
The black bird was delighted, but didn’t understand why “astronomy enthusiast” was added at the end.
The gray cat chuckled. “Of course it’s because he loves celestial bodies.”
After all, Morax’s usual hobby was playing with stars and pulling moons.
Andre was lost in thought in the corridor when he suddenly felt a chill all over. Looking up, he saw a flamboyant young man appear out of thin air, looking at him coldly as if at a dead man.
Without a word, the air was dead.
Being in the midst of it, he couldn’t see. But if there were others present, they would have seen the two men who were just in the corridor disappear in an instant, swallowed in the blink of an eye by a gigantic beast whose exact shape couldn’t be seen!
Space distorted as Andre utilized his strongest escape technique, pushing the power of the God of Darkness’s divine core to its limit. However, he still failed. A mysterious man suddenly appeared and firmly locked onto his location. Within a second, Andre fled to more than a dozen places but couldn’t shake off the man’s pursuit!
Andre realized the difference in levels. The other party’s level was above his. The domain he deployed had no effect on the opponent, and various magic tools he used were ineffective.
He thought quickly, instantly exploding with magical power and using every means at his disposal. He drew his sword and shattered countless spaces. Knowing he couldn’t escape, he set up a trap to gather power and counterattack the opponent. However, in an instant, he missed, only hearing a low laugh behind him.
Andre, who had plotted against so many people, tasted for the first time what it was like to be schemed against. He was ignited by an invisible enemy’s super-grade magic, his whole body burning with pure black fire, his skin and flesh boiling.
He was in the trap, while the opponent was outside. He released his magical power, wanting to dominate and control this domain, but it was useless. He couldn’t even find where the opponent was, unable to locate a target for his attacks.
