Chapter 27: Senior Sister, Please Behave
“Senior Sister, this place is so creepy…”
Pushing open the rotting wooden door, the white-clad boy glanced at the dilapidated statue in the main hall, his entire body shivering. He instinctively tightened his grip on Jiang Jinyue’s hand.
Jiang Jinyue turned to look at him, feeling a strange unease as the eerie atmosphere of the mountain temple seeped into her.
Before entering the hall, she had been somewhat annoyed about holding hands. But the heavy yin energy in this place was unsettling, even for a fox demon like her.
Though she was an Enchantress from a Western cult, the statue before them represented the corrupted image of an Eastern evil deity.
Different regions, different customs.
Western evil gods didn’t necessarily have jurisdiction over Eastern territories!
So now, Jiang Jinyue didn’t mind holding hands anymore. Even as a demoness, her hair stood on end—how could a mere mortal like He Yimo not feel the same?
To be honest, Jiang Jinyue found holding He Yimo’s hand somewhat reassuring. After all, he carried the protective token gifted by Sword Master Senior Sister Mo Yuyan.
It wasn’t that Jiang Jinyue lacked her own trump cards; it was just that if danger arose, relying on He Yimo’s token to save her life was far more convenient!
Of course.
While Jiang Jinyue’s mind was busy calculating her odds, He Yimo was thinking along similar lines as he held her hand.
“The deer cries… they seem to be coming from below!”
Jiang Jinyue cautiously approached the statue, crouching down to examine the floor carefully.
With her back to He Yimo, she discreetly activated her fox demon’s blood-red cursed eyes, scanning every detail of the mountain temple at lightning speed.
However, despite her thorough investigation, Jiang Jinyue couldn’t find any mechanism resembling a basement entrance.
“Senior Sister Jiang, don’t you think this statue seems to be staring at us?”
Behind her, He Yimo raised his lantern and casually dropped the comment.
Hearing this, Jiang Jinyue jolted in fright.
If she were in her true fox form, her tail would have shot straight up by now.
“Senior Sister, look up.”
Noticing her unease, He Yimo stepped closer and held the lantern up to Jiang Jinyue’s face.
He pointed at the statue, and Jiang Jinyue followed his gaze.
Silence fell. Goosebumps prickled across Jiang Jinyue’s skin as she instinctively grabbed He Yimo’s hand tighter—
“It… it really is.”
Her voice trembled slightly.
He Yimo remained calm. After all, in his past life playing the game, he already knew the secrets of this mountain temple.
“Senior Sister, look! There’s another small statue hidden in that corner!”
Feigning surprise, He Yimo shifted his gaze to a smaller statue in a side alcove of the main hall.
Jiang Jinyue followed him but kept her eyes fixed on the larger statue, unable to look away.
Ever since He Yimo mentioned it earlier, she’d felt as though the large statue’s eyes were following her no matter where she stood—right or left. Its gaze remained eerily fixed on her…
Jiang Jinyue couldn’t shake the feeling that if she turned her back on it, the decayed and crumbling statue would suddenly move.
Seeing that Jiang Jinyue was locked in a silent standoff with the statue, He Yimo quietly approached the smaller one and lit an incense stick in front of it.
Click—
“I lit an incense stick, and something seems to have moved.”
He Yimo feigned surprise as he pointed out the sound.
Jiang Jinyue turned to look, first at the small statue and then back at the large one behind her.
“Wait, the large statue isn’t staring at us anymore! What’s it looking at?”
She exclaimed in surprise.
Following its gaze, Jiang Jinyue spotted another small statue hidden in a shadowy corner.
“Wait, there’s another one!”
“Really? I’ll light an incense stick for this one too.”
Volunteering himself, He Yimo used his lantern’s flame to light another incense stick for the second small statue.
Click—
Another crisp mechanical sound echoed.
This time, there was a noticeable change in the large statue—it revealed three incense burners that rose from its pedestal.
“Could it be we need to light incense for these three burners in front of the large statue?”
Jiang Jinyue speculated aloud.
He Yimo nodded: “I think so. Why don’t you give it a try, Senior Sister?”
Stepping aside, he handed the lantern to Jiang Jinyue with an innocent smile.
For a moment, Jiang Jinyue hesitated as she took the lantern. A chill ran down her spine.
But she couldn’t refuse now. After all, He Yimo had already lit incense for two small statues—it was only fair that she handle the last one for the large statue.
“Tch… just don’t stare at me…”
Muttering under her breath, Jiang Jinyue reluctantly approached the large statue.
She kept her eyes fixed on its face, wary of any sudden movements. Ever since He Yimo pointed out its unsettling gaze earlier, she couldn’t shake off her paranoia.
“Senior Sister, hurry up! The wind outside is getting colder!”
A gust of wind blew through the hall as He Yimo feigned fear and hugged himself for warmth.
“Senior Sister, I feel like something eerie is watching me from outside!”
“Senior Sister… those two incense sticks we lit earlier are about to go out!”
He Yimo stood nearby and dramatically played along with his lines.
In truth, these were all phrases he’d seen as subtitles during his past life playing through this part of Fallen Immortal in the mountain temple questline.
He knew there were a few ghosts haunting this temple. But since he was here now, he figured he might as well help set the spooky atmosphere for Jiang Jinyue—enhancing her immersion in this creepy storyline.
The more he said, the more nervous Jiang Jinyue became.
Unlike mortal-born He Yimo, she’d witnessed firsthand how terrifying this world’s evil gods could be!
Respecting higher beings was basic common sense for any cultivator.
Click—
As Jiang Jinyue lit incense for the final burner in front of the large statue, another mechanical sound echoed through the hall.
And then—
“Oh crap! The statue’s eyes moved!”
He Yimo suddenly shouted in alarm.
Startled out of her wits, Jiang Jinyue stumbled backward into He Yimo’s arms.
But after several moments of clinging to him, they realized nothing had changed—the statue remained motionless.
Suspiciously glancing back at it, Jiang Jinyue saw He Yimo scratching his head with a confused expression:
“Maybe I imagined it? It seemed like I heard it mutter something and saw its eyes shift slightly!”
“M-maybe… I think I heard something too…”
Pale-faced and trembling slightly, Jiang Jinyue didn’t blame He Yimo. Instead, she supported his claim with her own observations.
Rather than suspecting him of deliberately scaring her to take advantage of her vulnerability, she believed Gu Wanglan had indeed cursed this temple with some ominous artifact.
After all—Gu Wanglan was also part of an evil cult. No one understood how deranged cultists could be better than Jiang Jinyue herself!
“Follow me—there must’ve been some mechanism triggered just now.”
After waiting for a while without further movement from the main hall, Jiang Jinyue mustered her courage and approached the large statue again.
This time though—He Yimo didn’t follow her immediately…
Instead—he quietly observed as she stepped closer—watching intently until her embroidered shoes pressed down on a specific stone slab before—
Rumble rumble rumble!!!
A loud noise erupted from above the statue!
Startled like a frightened kitten—Jiang Jinyue flipped backward instinctively—retreating several steps away…
Clang!
This time—the statue’s eyeballs fell out entirely!
Jiang Jinyue gasped audibly—her retreat causing her to bump into He Yimo again—her delicate fragrance wafting into his nose…
But amidst this chaos—she had no time for such details…
Fixating on the statue—she watched as its form split apart—revealing a hidden trapdoor beneath its base…
“What is that?!”
Jiang Jinyue exclaimed—her previously pale face lighting up with excitement…
Beside her—He Yimo’s face flushed slightly as he tried to focus elsewhere—clearly struggling with something internally…
Truth be told—the legendary innate charm of Jiang Jinyue’s Enchantress physique was overwhelming. Just having her close—even catching a whiff of her scent—was enough to push He Yimo dangerously close to losing control…
“Look! There’s really a secret chamber—”
Turning back excitedly towards him—she stopped mid-sentence upon noticing his flushed face and labored breathing: “You… why is your face so red?”
“I don’t know… maybe I’m just startled…”
He muttered awkwardly—taking a step back to maintain some distance…
Meanwhile—Jiang Jinyue noticed something else entirely—a certain “tent” rising prominently…
Recalling how she’d accidentally bumped into him earlier—the experienced fox demoness quickly pieced things together—her cheeks reddening slightly too…
Honestly—it could’ve been brushed off—but He Yimo’s reaction was so exaggerated that it was impossible not to notice…
“Your… reaction is certainly unique.”
She glanced at him awkwardly before turning away with an embarrassed cough:
“Maybe you should calm down first—it feels… strange otherwise.”
In truth—even as a fox demoness—she’d never encountered such situations before…
Back in Western regions—a single glance from her would leave people trembling—not daring any inappropriate thoughts…
And within Wuji Sect—interactions with fellow disciples rarely went beyond confessions—let alone triggering such blatant physiological responses…
So after all these years—He Yimo was genuinely her first…
Even Jiang Jinyue herself began wondering—was it her allure being too potent—or was He Yimo simply far more reactive than normal?
After some thought—she concluded it wasn’t her fault. After all—she hadn’t intentionally seduced him—it must’ve been He Yimo’s impure thoughts!
Especially considering his earlier mistake of mistaking her for a brothel courtesan!
Surely he’d been harboring inappropriate thoughts about me all along!
Pouting slightly—she glared at him with faint annoyance:
“Hey… are you done yet?”
“Yeah… almost.” He clasped his hands together silently apologizing inwardly…
Seeing this—she blushed slightly while placing hands on hips:
“Junior Brother—you really need better self-control! If this were Sword Master Senior Sister—you’d probably lose your ability to have children by now!”
“Don’t worry—Senior Sister Mo wouldn’t throw herself into my arms and rub against me…”
He retorted seriously…
Hearing this made Jiang Jinyue gasp sharply—her face turning bright red:
“W-who rubbed against you?! I was forced into it! That statue kept staring at me—it scared me half to death! If it’d been staring at you—you’d probably be clinging onto my leg crying by now!”
She stammered defensively—but He Yimo seemed uninterested…
Leaving Jiang Jinyue feeling utterly wronged…
Shrugging indifferently he replied:
“So let’s call it even—I promise not to mention tonight—and you don’t hold my natural reaction against me.”
“Fine—but don’t let it happen again! If you ever let your desires get out of control—I won’t hold back either!”
She crouched down glaring pointedly at him while gesturing threateningly towards his pants…
Smirking faintly he countered:
“And Senior Sister should behave herself too—stop unintentionally releasing your alluring scent… I’m young and full of energy—I can’t handle such tests.”
“I told you—I wasn’t trying to seduce you!!!”
Her outburst came instantly—a mix of anger and embarrassment…
But deep down—it hit a nerve she’d carried for years…
Some joked—but others held mirrors—and for Jiang Jinyue—the truth lay somewhere between…
Born with innate charm—it wasn’t something she could control…
Yet here she was being accused nonetheless…
“Then why throw yourself at me?”
“I was scared by that statue!”
“And I was scared into reacting—it must be that overly seductive statue tempting me…”
“You—!”
……
……
……
Underneath three statues’ watchful gazes—they bickered endlessly over trivialities…
Most arguments were meaningless—but amidst their banter—the eerie atmosphere within mountain temple gradually lightened considerably…
Eventually unable out-argue him further—Jiang Jinyue begrudgingly shifted focus towards trapdoor:
“Forget all that—we should check below! Maybe we’ll uncover truth behind deer cries!”
“But Senior Sister—the basement looks so creepy… do we really need go down?”
Standing hesitantly at entrance he voiced concern…
Hearing this reminded her about protective token he carried—and any lingering resentment vanished instantly replaced by gentle smile:
“Don’t worry Junior Brother! Stay behind me—I’ll protect you!”
Her reassurance brought instant relief—as he beamed brightly:
“With Senior Sister leading—I feel much safer!”
