Chapter 37 – ‘This Ancestor Has A Kind Of Magic’
The windows in the study were open, and the cool breeze that used to be refreshing now made Sun Peifeng feel cold.
It felt like there was a knife hanging over his heart. Between closing his eyes and opening them, the knife would fall and sever all the family love he had given over the years.
The premonition became stronger and stronger. He closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, he loosened his grip on Sun Zhi’s arm and showed a disapproving expression. “He said that Jia Yu became like this today because someone was deliberately harming our family.”
“Really?” Sun Zhi retreated to his uncle’s side and patted his shoulder soothingly. “Do you believe it?”
“Of course I don’t believe it.” Sun Peifeng said, “Our family has never made enemies with anyone, who would want to harm us? The Chen guy must be talking nonsense.”
Sun Zhi smiled again and gently advised: “I told you before not to look for those so-called heavenly masters. They are unreliable. It is better to send Jiayu to the hospital and let the doctor treat him properly.”
Sun Peifeng frowned, “We’ve taken him to the hospital before, but you can see it’s useless.”
He took two steps back tiredly and sat down on the sofa with a thud. His tone was worried, as if he really saw no hope. “Xiaozhi, besides Jiayu, you are the one that Uncle loves the most. He has never treated you as an outsider.”
“Why is Second Uncle suddenly saying this?” Sun Zhi half-knelt down, his eyes level with the middle-aged man opposite him. “Of course, I also regard my Second Uncle and Second Aunt as my relatives. Every time I call my parents, they ask me to be filial to you.”
Sun Peifeng nodded and said in a raised tone: “I know you are a good kid. So, if Jiayu’s life is like this, Second Uncle plans to hand over the management rights to you. Jiayu will only hold shares and will not participate in decision-making. But you have to promise me that you will take good care of him.”
“Management rights?” Sun Zhi adjusted his glasses. “What are you saying, Second Uncle? Jiayu will definitely get better.”
He looked up at the antique clock across from him and said, “It’s getting late. I’ll go over first.”
Sun Peifeng supported his head with his hands and waved his hands in an exhausted manner, “Go.”
Sun Zhi nodded, walked out of the study room in an orderly manner, and closed the door.
He did not leave immediately, but stood outside the door, staring down at the wooden floor in front of his toes. Sun Peifeng had plenty of money, and even the wooden flooring was purchased from abroad and shipped back specially.
“Management rights?” Sun Zhi shook his head and sneered.
Behind a pillar not far away, Mrs. Sun covered her mouth and tried to shrink her body as much as possible to avoid being discovered.
She pricked up her ears and waited until the footsteps disappeared before sticking her head out. After confirming that Sun Zhi had entered her son’s room, she walked into the study with an angry face and slammed the door shut.
Sun Peifeng, who was immersed in the brief confrontation with Sun Zhi, was startled by a bang and raised his head abruptly.
Seeing that it was his wife, he lowered his head again, rubbed his aching temple, and asked, “What’s wrong? Who made you angry again?”
Mrs. Sun put her hands behind her back and locked the study door. The heels of her high heels hit the ground, making a thumping sound.
Sun Peifeng was feeling annoyed and couldn’t help but frown and said, “Can you please stop wearing high heels at home? It’s so noisy.”
Her husband had always been a gentle man and seldom commented on her behavior. Mrs. Sun did not take it to heart and just sat down in the empty seat next to him.
“If you are not happy about it, why do you still say those things to Sun Zhi?”
“You eavesdropped on our conversation!” Sun Peifeng stood up suddenly, pacing anxiously with his hands behind his back, “How much did you hear?”
“I heard everything.” Mrs. Sun found her husband staring at her and said angrily, “Who told you to be so abnormal tonight, staring at Sun Zhi all the time?”
Sun Peifeng stopped and said, “Mr. Chen said that our Jiayu is like this because of someone else. Did you also hear that?”
“Oh, I heard it.” Ever since she married Sun Peifeng, she had been working in the business world with her husband. She only took a break in recent years.
She knew clearly in her heart, “What you said just now was not sincere. You were testing him.”
Sun Peifeng glanced at the study door, turned around and walked to the desk, turned on the camera icon on the computer, and the pinhole camera installed outside the study door did not capture anyone in the corridor.
He waved to his wife, motioning her to come closer, and then told her everything Chen Ling had told him, without missing a word.
Mrs. Sun was so angry that veins on her forehead bulged. Her nails decorated with crystals dug into her palms tightly. “Did Mr. Chen really say that?”
“Yes.” Thinking of his previous cold words to the young man, Sun Peifeng regretted it and said, “Maybe he is not wrong. Xiaozhi does have problems.”
The few words just now didn’t actually reveal anything substantial, but they just gave him a new understanding of his nephew whom he had taken care of for more than ten years.
Sun Zhi’s gentleness was so impeccable, like a robot with set emotional modes. No matter what he heard, he could show a perfect smile in the next second and whisper what one wanted to hear.
Horrible.
It’s so scary.
Sun Peifeng quickly walked to the window and closed the window that was letting in the cool breeze. The chill on his body seemed to have improved.
Mrs. Sun stood there for a long time. She spoke softly without asking any questions about Sun Zhi. She just looked at her husband with expectant and worried eyes: “What should we do with our son? Can he become the Jiayu he once was?”
She couldn’t imagine, if it was true as Chen Ling said, that Jiayu’s soul was replaced by a wild ghost, then how would they treat the remaining “Jia Yu” who was not the real Jiayu?
Could they ask a Taoist to drive away the wild ghost, leaving behind an empty shell?
Or should they burn the wild ghost along with its body, and let the evil spirit be buried with his son?
Mrs. Sun took a deep breath and suppressed the discomfort in her heart. “Go find Mr. Chen and apologize to him, or I can go with you and ask him to come back to help us.”
“Don’t be impatient…”
“How can I not be anxious!” Mrs. Sun couldn’t even yell in anger for fear that Sun Zhi, who was on the same floor, would hear her. She spoke in a very aggrieved tone, “What else do you want to test? You still believe it’s Sun Zhi, right?!”
Sun Peifeng shook his head, took his wife to the desk, and pressed her to sit on the chair. “Calm down first. Didn’t Mr. Chen give us a talisman before he left? When Jiayu falls asleep, let’s put the talisman under his pillow. If the wild ghost wants to harm him, at least the talisman paper can save his life. As for Sun Zhi…”
“We still have to think long-term. After all, we don’t know what connection he has with the other soul in Jiayu’s body. What if he discovers our suspicions and cruelly manipulates the ghost to kill Jiayu?”
Sun Peifeng didn’t dare tell his wife that he was thinking of more than that.
Since Sun Zhi dared to do such a thing to his cousin whom he grew up with, he naturally dared to do it to him and his wife.
The older generation of the Sun family had passed away, and now only he, his eldest brother, and two generations, Sun Jiayu and Sun Zhi, were left. His wife was an only child, and her parents had passed away two years ago due to health reasons.
If something happened to their family of three, the biggest beneficiary would be his eldest brother’s family.
A heartless person doesn’t care whether he hurts one more person or one less person.
Mrs. Sun felt a stuffy pain in her chest and her throat was blocked and sore. She opened her mouth and took a few deep breaths, forcing herself to suppress her emotions.
“Then call Mr. Chen now.”
Sun Peifeng slapped his forehead and then remembered that he had left his phone in the living room. He left the study with his wife and heard someone calling him when he went downstairs.
Sun Zhi came out of the room at some point and was leaning on the armrest looking down. “Second Uncle and Second Aunt, are you going out?”
Sun Peifeng: “Yes, we are going downstairs to take a walk.”
“Then please be careful on the road.” Sun Zhi narrowed his eyes behind the lenses, and no one knew whether this statement was sincere.
Sun Peifeng didn’t want to go out, but since she had said that, he could only pull his wife and pretend to go out for a walk in a relaxed manner.
The couple entered the elevator together, found a secluded pavilion downstairs, took out their cell phones, sat down, and called Chen Ling.
The call didn’t go through, and the short and urgent busy tone told him that the line was busy.
Chen Ling was talking to Wu Weiwei on the phone, asking him to come to the guest house as soon as possible.
While Wu Weiwei was packing his pajamas, he asked, “What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
Chen Ling thought for a moment and said, “It’s too boring for me to be alone. Hurry up and bring your game console over.”
Wu Weiwei looked at the end call interface on the screen, scratched his head, put the phone back into his trouser pocket, picked up his bag and went to Zhao Xunchang.
Zhao Xunchang was holding his phone, looking over and over the parrot’s photograph his apprentice had sent him. When he saw someone coming in, he was reluctant to raise his head, “What’s wrong?”
“Brother Chen asked me to stay with him.” Wu Weiwei said, “It’s just you and Brother Jiang at home, it should be okay.”
Zhao Xunchang snorted and laughed, “Your brother Jiang left a long time ago.”
The man from the Jiang family always habitually concealed his breath, but with his current ability, as long as he carefully observed and perceived it, he could still smell a little bit of the unusual yin energy leaking out.
Wu Weiwei was stunned and said, “Why didn’t I know that Brother Jiang went out?”
“I just found out about this, too.” Zhao Xunchang said, “You’d better not interfere in his affairs. Just be obedient. If he asks you to run errands, do it diligently. It will be good for your future.”
Wu Weiwei thought, ‘isn’t it just about currying favor with someone powerful? Why is he being so subtle about it?’
“I know, Mr. Zhao, don’t worry, Brother Jiang is our financial manager, I will definitely listen to him.”
“That’s enough for you to know. Go ahead.” Zhao Xunchang waved his hand, holding up his mobile phone to send a message to his apprentice, asking him to take two more photos.
In the guesthouse.
As soon as Chen Ling hung up the phone, Sun Peifeng called.
Afraid that the young man was still angry about what happened in the afternoon and was unwilling to listen to him, Sun Peifeng apologized sincerely without saying a word after the call was connected.
Listening to her husband’s rambling, Mrs. Sun was anxious and snatched the phone away: “Mr. Chen, my husband spoke rudely to you before because he couldn’t accept that someone he had always treated as his own son would harm and betray our family. Please don’t take it to heart.”
“No.” Chen Ling glanced at the parrot that was curled up stiffly in his arms, and the corner of his mouth twitched.
He turned his back to face the wall and continued, “You two are calling now. Is there something wrong with Sun Jiayu?”
Mrs. Sun: “Not yet.”
Before, while Chen Ling’s phone was unreachable, she asked the maid to deliver some fruit to her son’s room. After the maid went downstairs, she sent her a message saying that the young master was alone in the room and Sun Zhi had returned to his room.
“Mr. Chen, my husband and I are very worried about Jiayu’s situation. We are afraid that he might be in danger.” Mrs. Sun’s eyes were red and tears were welling up in her eyes.
Although the windows were tightly closed, Chen Ling still felt a familiar chill coming up.
He pretended not to know and soothed her gently, “Not for now. Sun Jiayu has a lot of Yang energy in his body, and that’s why the wild spirit has not been able to completely take over his body. But just in case, you’d better hide the talisman paper under his pillow as soon as possible.”
“Okay, we’ll do it right away.” Mrs. Sun agreed and then asked in a pleading tone, “If it’s convenient, how about I ask Peifeng to pick you up now? I know this will be very troublesome for you, but I…”
“Mrs. Sun, I live in the guesthouse of the breeding base, not far from your home. If there is any problem with the talisman paper, I can feel it and will go there as soon as possible.” The wild ghost squeezed in Sun Jiayu’s body is not an old ghost with profound Taoism. It has just possessed the owner of the body with his consent, so it was more troublesome to drive it away.
If it really had evil intentions and planned to fight to death to tear Sun Jiayu’s soul apart, the power of the talisman paper would be enough to deal him a heavy blow.
The young man’s calm tone comforted Mrs. Sun. After hanging up the phone, she took her husband back home.
It is ironic to say that although they were in their own home, the couple had to sneak into their own son’s room like thieves, fold the talisman paper into a small roll and stuff it into the pillow.
After doing all this, Sun Peifeng felt like he had run a marathon. His heart was beating so fast that it hurt his ribs.
Chen Ling wasn’t much better.
He hung up the phone, held the little guy tightly in his arms, and shouted into the air: “Jiang Yu, I know it’s you.”
There was only the corridor light left in the room, and except for the corridor and the bathroom, everywhere else was dim.
He noticed that the light in one corner was abnormally dark, as thick as ink. Although he could not see anything, he always felt as if there was danger lurking around him, as if some terrible, ferocious monster from the abyss would suddenly jump out from the corner.
The darkness was slowly getting bigger, and a human figure was emerging from it.
The outline deepened and the darkness faded, leaving behind a male body standing tall and straight like a pine tree.
Jiang Yu smiled at the young man, “Your perception of me is becoming more and more acute.”
Chen Ling stuffed the parrot into his clothes, and then protected its head through the clothes: “Is it because of the monument?”
“Yeah.” Jiang Yu sat down next to the young man. His tall body made the originally wide sofa seem narrow.
Chen Ling glanced at the parrot on his chest, which had gone from stiff to trembling, and said, “You scared it.”
Jiang Yu glanced at the bulging clothes, his eyes dark, “You just stuffed it into your clothes like this?”
“Yes, otherwise you would scare it to death.” Chen Ling did not notice the condemnation and resentment in his words, but Jiang Yu’s eyes became even gloomier.
After a moment of silence, he stood up and sat on a separate sofa farther away, “Put it out, I can stay away from it.”
Chen Ling measured the distance between the two sides with his eyes and discussed with the parrot: “It’s more than half a meter away. Do you want to come out and get some fresh air? You’ll get suffocated if you stay there for too long.”
The young man’s voice was soft and coaxing, which attracted Jiang Yu’s attention. He chuckled, “You treat him much better than you treat me as a friend.”
Chen Ling: “…”
The parrot poked its head out, its trembling symptoms improved somewhat, and it stared curiously at the man on the separate sofa.
After staring at him for a while, it shrank its head, crawled out of Chen Ling’s clothes, flew to the bed, and crawled into the quilt.
Chen Ling patted the fur on its body and looked straight into the man’s eyes: “Manager Jiang, are you telling me that you are jealous of a bird?”
“What’s wrong with me being honest? If friends and confidants are not honest with each other, negative emotions will accumulate and turn into conflicts if they are not relieved. Some conflicts cannot be repaired.” Jiang Yu’s eyes were deep and full of meaning, but he seemed to have no emotions at all. “I don’t want any unnecessary rifts to arise between you and me.”
Here it comes, the straight ball comes again.
Chen Ling secretly regretted that he should not have asked this person to show up because he was so rude!
Now, how was he to respond? Should he clap his hands and say, “Ancestor, you are really right?”
Jiang Yu was pleased by the helpless look on the young man’s face, and leaned forward slightly. “You have been hiding from me on purpose recently, this is not good, and it is not conducive to communication and further solving problems.”
Chen Ling seemed to be pushed to the extreme and rebounded, no longer caring about his face or his dignity.
‘Don’t you want to play it straight? Then let’s play it together.’ He also imitated the man and leaned forward. “Then stop saying those ambiguous words.”
Jiang Yu: “I just spoke the truth, it has nothing to do with ambiguity.”
The ancestor’s words were so powerful that Chen Ling was speechless and could only stare blankly.
Jiang Yu sighed, thinking that the young man’s eyes were wide open and very cute, but it was a pity that he couldn’t pat his head.
As a second choice, he reached out and put his hand on his shoulder, his palm perfectly embedded in the thin bones of the young man, “There are differences between you and me, I understand, and I am willing to wait. During this time, you cannot interfere with my feelings and attitude towards you. Whether it becomes shallower or deeper, we will let nature take its course.”
‘This ancestor has a kind of magic,’ Chen Ling thought, ‘a magic that is irresistible.’
After thinking for a while with his eyelids drooping, he nodded obediently and said “OK”.
Jiang Yu curled his lips in satisfaction, his eyes stopped on the bulge in the quilt, and he stood up and walked over.
The solidified ball began to tremble again. Chen Ling thought with concern that when he lifted the quilt, he would find small purple and blue feathers inside.
As if it had heard his thoughts, a hand with distinct joints and cold white skin actually lifted up the quilt.
Jiang Yu picked up the parrot with one hand: “Are you afraid of me?”
The parrot closed its eyes and pretended to be dead.
Chen Ling came over, took the parrot and hugged it like a baby, “Please don’t scare it, it’s quite pitiful.” He dared not eat well or sleep well, he would feel half a pound lighter when he woke up tomorrow morning.
Jiang Yu’s face darkened because of the young man’s disgusted expression. He was patient and said to the parrot who was still pretending to be dead: “I won’t hurt you.”
The parrot’s head suddenly moved, and it opened one eye to peek at the scary man who was speaking.
After the two looked at each other for a moment, it opened its other eye, straightened its limp neck, and repeated in a low voice: “Really, really.”
Jiang Yu snorted with an ambiguous tone, which was considered as his agreement.
Chen Ling didn’t expect this kind of development tonight. He was in a good mood and quickly ran to the coffee table to bring some melon seeds to the little guy so that he could eat as much as he wanted without worrying about it.
The parrot’s claws and beak are very flexible, and it can crack the melon seeds with a crackling sound.
Chen Ling thought it was very interesting to watch that the whole night. Just as he was thinking about whether he should go to the front desk to see if there were any other nuts, there was a knock on the door.
As soon as the door locked, Wu Weiwei grinned at the person at the door, “Brother Chen, I brought the things you asked me to bring.”
“Let’s play on TV.” Chen Ling led people into the
