- Chapter 19 - The Hero and Martial Artist-san â‘
Finally, we had a chance to sit down and talk properly.
“So, Master, why are you here?”
“This place has nothing.”
“Right.”
“Perfect for training.”
“I see.”
“Is that really okay!?”
“Like I said, that’s just how she is.”
That’s just how she is—but for all her eccentricities, Master is remarkably skilled at survival. She’d found a spot in the middle of this wilderness with a spring and made it her base. She’d even set up a simple tent-like structure with enough space for three people to relax. Just being able to escape the sun and drink some water felt like a blessing. Truly, roofs are one of humanity’s greatest inventions.
“At least now we can rest for a bit.”
Red Hair-chan spoke gently to the little bird in her hands. As if responding, the bird let out a faint chirp. However, its voice was noticeably weaker than before.
“Thank you for helping us earlier.”
“Don’t worry about it. It’s a master’s duty to help their disciple.”
“I’m honored.”
Without changing her expression, Master munched noisily on what appeared to be hardtack from her provisions. Alongside it were dried meat, a jar of salt, and even some vegetables of unknown origin. It seemed she really had been training in this area. Honestly, this person lives far too freely.
“Um, Master-san?”
“What?”
“It’s just… you eat a lot with such enthusiasm, despite being so small.”
Of all people, you shouldn’t be the one to say that, I thought.
“Eating well is important. You, on the other hand, should eat more. Your food hasn’t gone down at all.”
Now that she mentioned it, it was true. Despite being famously enthusiastic about eating, the bread and meat I’d given Red Hair-chan hadn’t decreased at all. Before the golem attack, she’d been complaining about being hungry, so it wasn’t like she’d lost her appetite.
“U-uh, Master-san, how have you lived so long? Is there some kind of secret to it?”
Clearly trying to change the subject, Red Hair-chan threw a nonsensical question at Master. There’s no way there’s a secret to living to 1,023 years old. It’s obviously unnatural. She’s blatantly defying the laws of nature.
“Eat well, move well, sleep well. That alone keeps a person healthy.”
“I-I see.”
“Master, stop giving such vague answers.”
“Hmph. I’m completely serious. This is the truth.”
Well… she’s not wrong.
“Uh, Hero-san?”
“Yeah? What is it?”
“Could you take another look at this little one? I’ve been giving it bread crumbs, but it doesn’t seem to be eating much.”
Looking up at me with a pleading expression, Red Hair-chan held out the little bird.
Ah… I get it. Red Hair-chan’s low energy is because she’s been so focused on the bird in her hands. I wanted to help if I could, but I had another task to take care of.
I glanced over at Master. Busy drinking water from a gourd, she caught my look and gave me a quick wink.
Alright. If it’s Master, I can trust her to handle Red Hair-chan and the bird.
“Sorry, Red Hair-chan. I think I might’ve left something back where we fought the golem.”
“Left something?”
“Yeah. I need to go retrieve it. Can you let Master take care of the bird for now?”
“I… I understand. Then, I’ll come with you—”
“No, it’s fine. I’ll go alone. I’m really sorry about this.”
After gently patting her vibrant red hair, I stepped out of the tent.
Lowering my shoulders, loosening my knees, and stretching my back, I took a deep breath.
“Alright. Let’s do this.”
Time to fetch my “forgotten item.”
I had a feeling.
That golem wasn’t a natural one.
