- Chapter 27 - The Hero and Necromancer-san
“Wow~. It’s huge.”
“Isn’t it?”
Together with Red Hair-chan, I made my way to the docked ship. The golem we fought before was large, but it was tall, whereas this ship was massive in both width and scale. It could easily be mistaken for a luxury cruise liner.
Nearby, one of the dragons was enjoying a bath in the seawater. The way it shook its body, almost like a dog shaking off water, was oddly cute, eliciting delighted cheers from the children watching.
“Dragon-san seems so docile…”
“That dragon is entirely under Necromancer-san’s control. There’s absolutely no chance it’ll go rogue or act out of control.”
“Is that because of Necromancer-san’s magi—”
“Hero-samaa!!!”
A voice rang out.
It wasn’t coming from the right. It wasn’t coming from the left. Naturally, it wasn’t coming from below.
Which left one possibility: above.
Calmly, I set my juice cup down on the ground, widened my stance, lowered my center of gravity, and extended my arms to prepare to catch whatever was falling.
“It’s been so long!”
And then, I caught it.
“…Yeah, long time no see.”
“Oh, Hero-sama! It truly is you!”
Yes, yes, it’s me, Hero-sama. Are those beautiful eyes of yours just for decoration?
“I’ve been longing to see you! Are you well? Is your body in good health?”
The most voluptuous figure in our party squirmed in my arms. Please, I’m begging you, stop moving like that—it’s harmful to my eyes.
“I’m fine. I’m glad to see you’re doing well, Necromancer-san.”
“Oh, how wonderful! How wonderful it is to know that you’ve been thinking of me so fondly!”
She’s as out there as ever. Honestly, she’s been like this the entire time since joining the party.
“Could you, I don’t know, stop jumping out of the sky?”
“My apologies. I saw you waiting below from the window of the ship and simply couldn’t help myself… But, you see, I knew you would catch me. I had faith that you, Hero-sama, would never let someone as helpless as me fall to the ground and kiss the dirt.”
“You’re the one who decided to jump, though.”
This woman truly doesn’t listen.
“Is your work finished?”
“No, not at all. We’ve just docked at the port, so not even close.”
“That’s not good.”
“Yes, I’m a hopeless woman. But the idea of not seeing Hero-sama, even with urgent work waiting for me, isn’t an option I can accept!”
“That makes you even more hopeless.”
“Yes, yes, I’m a hopeless woman… So, Hero-sama, please scold me for being so hopeless.”
“You know, Necromancer-san, I get the feeling you enjoy being scolded more than doing the scolding.”
“Of course.”
“At least pretend to be embarrassed.”
The conversation was veering into dangerous territory, so I glanced over at Red Hair-chan. As expected, she was frozen in place, utterly bewildered by Necromancer-san’s completely different energy compared to the others she’d met so far. Yeah, I can’t blame her.
“Red Hair-chan, sorry to bother you, but could you go buy us something to snack on? Anything’s fine.”
“Oh, um, okay!”
“Ara. My apologies for the trouble. Thank you so much.”
Still clinging to me, Necromancer-san watched Red Hair-chan’s retreating figure. I couldn’t hold her forever, so I set her down and picked up the juice I’d earlier placed on the ground.
“That girl, is she the one?”
“You know the situation?”
“Of course. Sage-sama has informed me.”
“That’s good to hear.”
“Did you come all the way here with just her?”
“Yeah. Along the way, we stopped by to meet the others… Oh, by the way, I ran into Martial Artist-san after a long time.”
“Ara, so she hasn’t died in a ditch somewhere. How disappointing. I dislike her.”
“Uh…”
Sure, they used to be enemies, but we ended up saving the world together. No need to hold such a grudge…
Not knowing how to respond, I awkwardly took a sip of my juice.
“Hero-sama.”
“Hm?”
“Do you… like that girl?”
Spitting out my drink would’ve been the classic reaction, but instead, her question made me turn serious.
“Would it be a problem if I did?”
“Yes, it would.”
She leaned in close, her hand brushing against my skin. Her warmth was like a soothing bath, and I couldn’t help but narrow my eyes.
“I’m jealous.”
She whispered softly into my ear.
