- Chapter 56 - A Bit of an Unexpected Temper
Orson returned to the dormitory. Hearing the sound of the door opening downstairs, Litte quickly jumped off Orson’s bed, hurriedly tidied up the sheets and blanket, and then walked to the top of the stairs.
“Welcome back, Orson.”
Orson looked at Litte, who was standing at the staircase to greet him, and smiled.
“Mm, I’m back.”
“How did the discussion about the engagement go?”
Litte walked downstairs, made Orson a cup of tea in the living room, and asked.
“Uh…” Orson hesitated, unsure if he should say it.
“What’s wrong?” Seeing Orson’s hesitation, Litte grew nervous.
Could it be that Orson didn’t manage to annul his engagement with Lianca?
“The engagement was annulled… but not entirely,” Orson continued. “Lianca and I are no longer engaged. As of now, she’s no longer my fiancée.”
“Oh.” Litte nodded. “Then what do you mean by ‘not entirely’?”
“Well… while Lianca is no longer my fiancée, her sister Olivia has taken her place.”
“Wha—what?!” Litte exclaimed, jumping up from the sofa. “Orson, are you serious?!”
Olivia, of all people, is now Orson’s fiancée?
“Mm.” Orson nodded and began explaining the series of events that led to this.
“…” After listening, Litte sat silently, staring at the coffee table with an unhappy expression.
“What’s wrong, Litte?” Seeing Litte’s troubled expression, Orson asked with a smile.
“Is it that you don’t like Olivia? You don’t want her to become your sister-in-law?”
“No, no,” Litte quickly shook her head.
Orson could tell from Litte’s expression what he was really thinking.
He sighed helplessly.
Who knows what Olivia did to make Litte so against the idea of her and me being together?
“You’re not even in a relationship yourself, yet you’re worrying about me,” Orson said, tapping Litte lightly on the forehead.
“Ugh…”
“Don’t worry. Olivia and I are just engaged for now. There’s no guarantee she’ll become your sister-in-law in the future.” Orson took a sip of tea and changed the subject.
“By the way, Litte, your classes ended pretty early today, didn’t they? Didn’t you have elective courses to choose from? Which ones did you pick?”
“Mm… I picked a few. Here, take a look,” Litte said, handing her schedule to Orson.
Orson glanced at Litte’s schedule and noticed something interesting.
“‘Basic Alchemy’? You chose Professor Hecatia’s course?”
“Mm.” Litte nodded.
“Haven’t you heard about Professor Hecatia’s ‘glorious reputation’? She’s infamous for treating her students like burdens. You’d probably learn more about alchemy from me.”
“If Professor Hecatia can remain at the academy, she must have her own strengths. I believe I can learn something from her.”
“Besides… she helped me on the first day of school. If I didn’t choose her course, it might get canceled…” Litte said softly.
After the morning class ended, Hecatia had asked Litte to stay behind and explained her situation, even asking for his help.
“Please, Litte. I know you’re my best student. I’m begging you to sign up for my elective course. If you don’t, my course might get canceled, and I’ll lose my rank and benefits.”
Seeing the dejected Hecatia pleading with her, Litte couldn’t bring herself to refuse and agreed.
“So, you’re just being a good Samaritan, helping her fill her class?” Orson said, chuckling.
“No! Professor Hecatia said I can use her alchemy lab whenever I want, and she’ll always be there.”
“Alright.” Orson nodded. “If you’re serious about learning alchemy, having access to a lab is definitely important.”
Orson realized that the conversation had drifted. His original goal had been to match Litte with Lianca.
After thinking for a moment, he brought the topic back. “Litte, are there any impressive people in your class?”
“Hmm? Impressive people?” Litte thought for a moment and then nodded. “Yes, Lianca. She’s actually my deskmate.”
“Oh? That’s great!” Orson couldn’t help but exclaim.
As expected of the protagonist—even with the timeline altered, Litte still managed to connect with Lianca.
And they’re deskmates! If I give them a little nudge, wouldn’t it be easy for them to get together?
With this thought, Orson cleared his throat and said:
“Litte, what are your thoughts on romance? Do you have someone you like?”
“Eh?” Litte looked at Orson in surprise, her cheeks turning slightly red. “N-no, I don’t.”
“I see.” Orson smiled knowingly, his expression akin to that of a doting aunt.
“You know, at a certain point in life, people tend to feel lonely. That’s when having someone by your side becomes important.”
“Litte, if possible, try to find someone during your four years at the academy…”
Litte listened to Orson’s advice, feeling her face grow hotter by the second.
Is Orson hinting at my real gender? Is he trying to subtly express his feelings for me?
Or… does Orson actually like me in my male disguise?
Before Litte’s imagination could run any wilder, Orson’s next words shattered her fantasies.
“I think Lianca would be a great choice for you.”
“Eh?” Litte froze. “Orson, what… what did you just say?”
“I said, I think Lianca would be a great match for you. Why not consider giving it a try?” Orson said, nudging Litte’s arm with his elbow.
“She’s the second daughter of the Essenberg family and incredibly talented. She’s already a Tier 4 warrior at such a young age. Litte, you—” Orson’s words were abruptly cut off by Litte.
“But didn’t you just annul your engagement with her?” Litte said, her tone inexplicably tinged with anger.
Why is Orson trying to push someone he doesn’t want onto me?!
Orson immediately realized his mistake.
He had just annulled his engagement with Lianca. If she held any resentment toward him, it might extend to Litte as well. Asking Litte to approach her now might backfire.
I didn’t expect Litte, who usually keeps a low profile, to have such a sharp sense when it comes to relationships.
Realizing his blunder, Orson quickly apologized.
“Sorry, Litte. I forgot about that. Maybe later, after some time has passed, you can give it a try…”
“Orson, I’m feeling a bit tired. I’m going upstairs to rest.” For some reason, Litte didn’t want to continue the conversation. She stood up abruptly and, with a hint of irritation, went upstairs.
Leaving Orson standing there, dumbfounded.
