- Chapter 78 - "Betrayal"
“Litte, don’t be nervous during the trial. Just say everything you know and stick to the truth. Don’t let other people’s words influence your judgment.”
In the room, Orson gave Litte his final reminder.
The trial was about to begin. The seats for the witness, the victim, and the accused were already prepared, and the audience was gradually filling the hall.
The venue was packed to the brim.
Naturally, the person presiding over the trial was Headmaster Luca.
“Ahem, as everyone knows, a major incident has recently occurred at the academy, and the student body’s reaction has been intense. Many students have called for a trial, and in the spirit of democracy, we have taken their opinions into account and convened this trial today.”
Luca said this from the podium.
“Now, let the accused enter.” With this, Orson led Litte into the hall from one side and seated him at the defendant’s table.
“Let the witness enter.”
Then, one of Tyril’s lackeys who had testified earlier took the seat designated for the witness.
“Finally, let the victim enter.”
Donny, who had been treating the trial as a comedy show, suddenly froze when he saw Olivia supporting Anya as they walked onto the stage. Anya took the victim’s seat.
When did Anya get involved with Olivia?
A bad feeling immediately welled up in Donny’s chest.
After Anya was seated, Olivia stepped off the stage and sat beside Orson.
“How did you get involved with the victim?” Orson couldn’t help but ask Olivia.
“Just wait and see. The surprise I promised is about to arrive,” Olivia said with a simple smile, not answering his question.
“Now, let’s hear from the witness.” Once everyone was seated, Luca officially announced the start of the trial, beginning with the witness’s testimony.
“That day…” Tyril’s lackey recited the lines Tyril had given him with practiced fluency.
After listening to the testimony, Luca nodded and turned to Litte.
“Defendant Litte, do you have anything to refute?”
“Mm.” Litte nodded, then stood up and recounted everything that had happened from her perspective that day.
As she spoke, Litte’s voice was noticeably trembling. Although Orson knew it was due to Litte’s emotional agitation and nervousness, to the audience in the seats below, it came across as a sign of guilt.
“Very well.” Luca nodded again, then looked at Anya. “Victim, please correct any discrepancies in the previous testimonies.”
“…” Anya remained silent for a moment before standing up and bowing deeply to everyone.
Tyril, watching Anya, had already started smiling.
As long as Anya recited the lines he had given her, everything would proceed as planned…
But then, he saw Anya hand a piece of paper to Luca.
Luca glanced at the note and raised his eyebrows in surprise.
“Do you want me to read this out loud?” Luca asked Anya.
“Yes.” Anya nodded.
“Alright, I’ll read it then.” Luca said this as he began to read the lines Tyril had given to Anya, word for word.
He even read the parenthetical instructions, like “add emotion here” and “include sobbing tone,” with a straight and meticulous tone.
Hearing Luca’s serious voice reading the stage directions caused the audience to burst into laughter.
After Luca finished reading, Anya finally spoke.
“These lines were given to me by someone who wanted me to say them during the trial to frame Litte.”
With this, Anya recounted what had truly happened that day, which aligned perfectly with Litte’s account.
“What the hell is going on?!” Tyril couldn’t help but curse aloud.
Donny also frowned deeply.
“There was someone who approached me when my mother fell gravely ill and my family needed a large sum of money. They said they’d pay for my mother’s treatment if I helped frame Litte. I believed them at the time and carried out the plan to frame him. I’m very sorry.” Anya bowed deeply to Litte, then to the audience.
“I also lied to all of you, my fellow students who are full of a sense of justice. I’m deeply sorry.”
Saying this, Anya bowed again to the students in the audience.
The audience couldn’t help but murmur and sigh at the dramatic turn of events.
“Anya, are you certain these words are your own and that no one coerced you into saying them?” Luca asked. “If someone forced you, I can protect you.”
“I can guarantee that everything I’ve said is true.” Anya nodded firmly.
“Then, since you’ve said this much, who instructed you?” Luca pressed further.
“That person is in the audience right now.” Anya looked up and stared directly at Tyril.
She then stepped off the stage, walked up to Tyril’s seat, and pointed at him.
“It was Tyril. Tyril instructed me to frame Litte.”
“You’re joking!” Tyril couldn’t sit still anymore. He stood up and loudly defended himself. “Everyone, don’t you think it’s strange? Why is the victim accusing me now?”
“She must have been coerced by Orson! That’s definitely it!”
“Just because I had some conflicts with Litte before, President Orson is now using his authority to threaten Anya into framing me. This is slander—pure slander!”
Luca looked at Tyril and smiled faintly.
“Whether it’s slander or not, the trial will now include one more person. Tyril, come up here.”
Since the Headmaster had spoken, Tyril had no choice but to reluctantly follow Anya onto the stage.
“Tyril, if I recall correctly, didn’t you cause trouble during the recent Student Council elections?” Luca said. “From a motive standpoint, you are indeed the most likely person to harm Litte.”
“Yes.” Olivia stepped onto the stage at this moment, handing a sheet of paper to Luca.
“This is Tyril’s entrance exam. Headmaster, you can compare the handwriting.”
“Oh?” Luca took the paper and compared the handwriting. It was a match.
“Indeed, the handwriting is identical.” Luca then looked at Tyril, his gaze growing colder.
“Tyril, this isn’t your first time, is it?”
“…” Tyril wanted to defend himself, but no one was willing to believe him anymore.
“Also, Tyril was recently expelled from Class 1-1 by Professor Hecatia for using a powerful fire spell during a magic lesson to harm Litte.”
“Oh? Is that so?” Luca’s expression grew even colder upon hearing this.
Tyril, meanwhile, felt the world spinning around him.
He couldn’t understand why Anya had betrayed him.
