Choices Without Love Never Lead to Good Results
The white smoke swirled, smoldering without a place to go.
In her own room, prepared by Fiene, Unya gazed at a cigarette package while leaning against the wall with one knee up.
Click, click, click… Opening and closing her Zippo lighter repeatedly, she aimed her hollow gaze at the package.
The brand, heavy in tar for a woman’s choice, seemed more suited for men. Inside the crumpled package, three old cigarettes continued to sleep, their fate sealed without being needed by anyone.
Before long, rain poured over the Hawaiian Islands, a place not known for high annual rainfall.
Ignoring the thin rain, the noise of raindrops drowned her ears, and from the cigarette in her mouth, a wisp of purple smoke danced.

“…Onii-chan.”
With a single word, she called out for her Onii-chan.
“Sumire. Call Unya-sensei. As she said, this place wasn’t meant for angels to live together in harmony. We’re going home.”
When I, soaked to the bone from my return, gave that order, my sister opened her mouth, dumbfounded.
“Wh-why so sudden? When we came to pick you up, you were almost ready to apply for permanent residency.”
“…’I have a bad feeling.'”
While drying Yura’s head, still clinging to my arm, I tossed a bath towel to Sumire and looked for the butlers, but they were nowhere to be found inside.
The “bad feeling” intensified.
In order to prepare to leave, I rushed up to Sumire’s room, rifled through the dresser without permission, and threw her undergarments into the suitcase.
“Onii-chan, it seems Unya-sensei has gone out. I can’t find her anywhere—she has finally succumbed to desire!”
“Because I was suddenly kidnapped, I’m only prepared as I am, dressed as I stand. Hurry up and get ready. If necessary, I’ll carry you myself.”
I picked up Sumire, who lay silent on the spot, collected also Yura, who had fallen in the hallway, and threw both of them in front of the entrance.
“Let’s go, it’s the climax. Escape from the island crawling with murderers, and we can watch the end credits from the sofa at home.”
“Onii-chan, is it okay? To leave behind Unya-sensei and Yui-senpai?”
“Have you ever worried about a lion living in the savannah? Come on, stand up. You’ve arranged a way out, haven’t you?”
My sister stood up gleefully, saying, “Of course, there is, but there’s ‘a condition.'”
“Leave Yura-senpai behind.”
The light seemed to fade from Yura’s eyes.
“Sorry, senpai. My boat only fits two.”
“Then, it’s ‘just right.'”
With a face that seemed ready to burst into laughter at any moment, Yura crouched down and, as if to intimidate, thrust both hands into her bag.
“It’s just the two of us from now on.”
To such a threat, Sumire returned a lovely, mocking laugh.
“Ahaha, don’t you get it yet? Onii-chan will choose me. Did you know that the longer a couple spends together on a holiday, the higher the husband’s happiness index jumps? Yura-senpai, can you tell me how many hours a day you spend with Onii-chan?”
“Twenty-four hours.”
“…Should I put a beautiful flower on the desk for you?”
Can we postpone the flirting for later?
As I watched the situation with a cold gaze, Yura turned bloodshot eyes toward me and spat out her words with a grabbing intensity.
“Akira-sama… Between me and this girl… Which one will you choose?”
—In the end, who do you love?
The words of the sensei, who wasn’t supposed to be here, echoed, and I realized I was being forced to make yet another choice.
—Is it Minatsuki, is it Sumire, is it Kinugasa… or is it Fiene?
Ultimately, life is a series of choices, and this is just one of them. Yet, it feels like it could be a decisive “strike.” Just because she’s relatively safe, choosing my sister feels like it would “fix my life” forever.
“Onii-chan!! You’ll choose me, right!? You love me the most, right!? If there wasn’t a future where I’m chosen by Onii-chan, I wouldn’t have been born into this world, right!? Right!? Right!?”
Do they want what’s called my heart? What do they plan to do with such an intangible thing? Don’t they know the saying, “Money makes the world go round”? If I could live comfortably as a kept man, that would be enough for me.
—I want Darling’s heart.
Even though that should be enough… Why did I reject Fiene’s courtship? If I had followed the path she wanted, I could have found a place of peace.
When I walked towards Fiene, who had her arms open that time, I saw in her eyes a life of “me as a kept man,” where there was no Minatsuki-san, no Sumire, no Yura, no Maria, and no sensei… and I thought, “I am not there.”
Maybe, I still want to be with these people—The front door swung open, and Fiene, drenched to the bone, glared at us with an intense look.
Within the labyrinth of her aquamarine eyes, a “lost me” existed.
“Let’s settle this… Alright, let’s have a game… ‘The three of us’ and Fii… will bet on Akira-kun…”
Choices were laid out.
“Understood.”
If that’s the case, then I—
“Let’s have a contest.”
—I’ll just have to choose from among them.
