- Chapter 1 - There Has to Be a Limit to Having a Party!
Swish, swish, swish—
Tap, tap, tap—
The sound of rain and hooves intertwined, echoing in Leon’s ears.
The cold rainwater hit his face, bringing a bone-chilling coolness.
Why is it raining? Shouldn’t I be in a hospital bed right now?
In a daze, Leon remembered that he was working a part-time job handing out flyers at the school gate and got heatstroke because he didn’t respect summer enough.
Based on that, he should be in the hospital or the school infirmary.
But, this bed seems a bit crowded?
Leon could feel people all around him, above, below, left, and right, surrounded by warm breaths.
Besides the cramped living space, it was also somewhat bumpy.
It must be a dream.
How could a hospital pile so many people onto one bed? There’s a limit to having a party!
“Damn it, shit, truly unlucky.”
“Quickly bury this group of people. We also need to wash ourselves thoroughly with holy water when we go back, lest we get infected with the plague.”
“Yeah, how could we be so unlucky to be assigned this? I spent 10 copper coins at the pastry shop just to touch Miss Jenny’s toes.”
“Never lick a woman’s foot, look, my mouth still hasn’t healed.”
Unfamiliar voices of discussion interrupted Leon’s thoughts.
The bumpy feeling of weightlessness disappeared, and a light source gradually approached.
The person holding the lantern appeared before Leon, directly dragging him out of the cart while his consciousness was still half-muddled, and roughly threw him onto the ground. The pain gradually cleared Leon’s head.
He realized this might not be a dream, because it was too real.
Mud splattered all over him. He rubbed his head, which was ringing from the fall, and it felt even more painful.
A memory that didn’t belong to him surged forth.
After a brief pause in thought, Leon finally understood his situation.
He had transmigrated! Leon Moria, a Holy Empire citizen, the illegitimate son of a certain important figure.
He had lived with his mother in the border town of Blueberry for many years until his mother passed away, telling him to find his biological father.
So, he quit his job at the blacksmith shop, took a merchant caravan’s cart, and headed together towards Green Shade Territory, but unfortunately, they encountered bandits who robbed the caravan.
They finally managed to escape and came to the city gate for help, but were treated as sick refugees, knocked unconscious by guards with sticks, and sent here.
Now the guards’ mission was to bury this group of people alive to ensure the disease didn’t spread throughout the city.
“Don’t bury us alive, we’re not infected, we’re a legitimate merchant caravan.”
The caravan captain stood up. He was a middle-aged man with a full beard. He felt around in his pocket, wanting to bribe the guards, but found that he was already penniless.
Other people who were conscious also began to beg for mercy.
“Please, spare us, we’re not sick.”
“Truly, we are still very healthy. Sirs, please believe us, we are just a merchant caravan that encountered bandits, we really haven’t contracted the disease.”
“We are also legal citizens of the Empire, you cannot do this, we will protest against you.”
The scene instantly became chaotic. If the guards hadn’t been holding weapons, the adult men in the caravan probably would have started resisting.
“Selfish and filthy underground rats, do you want to bring disease to Green Shade Territory?”
The guard wearing soft leather armor drew his short sword and heavily struck the head of the caravan captain who was leading the commotion.
Blood overflowed from the captain’s forehead, gushing out. He fell into a pool of blood, his eyes wide open, as if accusing the world of injustice.
“Sick people always say they’re not sick, everyone quiet down.”
The guard angrily scolded. The sounds of pleading instantly became much quieter.
After everyone quieted down, Leon spoke,
“I am the illegitimate son of Lord Moria, the Lord of Green Shade Territory, you cannot kill me.”
Hearing Leon’s words, the guard indeed put away his short sword.
Just as Leon’s tense nerves had slightly relaxed, he heard familiar words echo in his ears.
“I am also the illegitimate son of Lord Moria, the Lord of Green Shade Territory, you cannot kill me.”
“I am the illegitimate son of Lord Moria, the Lord of Green Shade Territory, you cannot kill me.”
“I am truly the illegitimate son of Lord Moria, the Lord of Green Shade Territory, you cannot kill me.”
The people from the caravan panicked. To save their lives, they actually competed to imitate Leon.
Leon also panicked. This group of people, they don’t play fair!
The guard indeed drew his short sword again.
“A bunch of shit! If you’re the Lord’s illegitimate sons, then I’m the Lord’s grandfather! How dare you make fun of Grandpa.”
Four or five guards drew their weapons and started a brutal beating on everyone.
Just as the guard’s short sword was about to stab Leon, the guard’s pupils suddenly dilated, revealing an expression of extreme fear.
They quickly turned around and fled in panic.
“Why did the guards leave?”
“Did they believe us?”
“Anyway, we don’t have to die, that’s great.”
Just as everyone was rejoicing about escaping the fate of being buried alive, they heard the guards’ screams.
“Ah—damn it, it’s got me, help, help.”
Accompanied by desperate screams, the lantern clattered to the ground, and the horses neighed in fright.
In the faint lamplight, everyone saw that soldier’s body being torn apart by something, his intestines spilling out.
Then the other few soldiers raised their short swords and shields, but unfortunately, they didn’t know what unknown terror they had encountered. After a series of chaotic screams, the forest returned to silence.
The short swords and shields were stained with blood, lying quietly not far from the lantern.
Everyone’s hearts instantly rose to their throats.
Some women couldn’t help but scream out.
Leon’s throat bobbed, constantly producing saliva.
The lantern was stepped out by something, the surroundings plunged into endless darkness, and the atmosphere of terror reached its peak.
Crunch—crunch—crunch—
It sounded like something was coming!
“Damn it, run! This is White Bone Forest!”
“Run, run!”
“Help!”
Agile people were the first to climb out of the mud and rush outwards.
Leon could only pinch his thigh to temporarily drive away the fear with pain, allowing him to think calmly.
No! Don’t move, these monsters should clearly be closer to us, but they attacked the guards first. If it wasn’t because of the light source, it’s because they were moving!
His guess was quickly proven right.
The first group of people who rushed out encountered a sudden attack.
In the blink of an eye, flesh and blood flew everywhere. Their bodies were as fragile as paper figures, instantly torn to shreds.
Broken limbs fell in front of Leon, and warm blood splattered all over his face.
The rain had stopped at some point, the dark clouds dispersed, and a ray of moonlight shone down.
Leon clearly saw the faces of the monsters.
They were mutated trees,
Their trunks were topped with features similar to human faces, but these features were twisted into a mess,
Bulging eyeballs rolled around, the branches were soft and slender, constantly dancing in the sky, as if trying to catch any living thing that passed before them.
They hung the people they had torn to shreds on themselves, as if they were their trophies.
A pungent smell of blood spread to every corner.
The tree monsters let out chilling laughter, mixed with the sound of the night wind whistling through, stimulating Leon’s nerves.
Leon stood frozen in place, fear crawling over his entire body like a persistent parasite. His legs felt like they were filled with lead, his body completely losing the ability to move.
He had never seen such a terrifying scene.
Compared to these strong tree monsters, humans were simply no match.
Just standing still like this probably only delays the time until death.
When the monsters kill everyone, I still won’t survive.
Could it be that I will die here on the first day of transmigrating?
How unwilling I am…
Before Leon could even recall his short life, he heard the heavy sound of chains in his ears.
Clang, clang, clang—
The monsters in the forest stopped their movements, collectively looking into the deep darkness.
As if a more terrifying presence was approaching…
