- Chapter 18 - On the High Wall
The faint light of dawn sprinkled over Green Shade Territory, awakening the lord-city.
Leon, as the Lord, inspected his territory for the first time.
Accompanied by the Head of Internal Affairs, Karel Dennis, he rode in a luxurious eight-horse carriage, appearing on the main street of Green Shade Territory’s main city with Sophie. His personal maids, Anna and Annie, also accompanied him.
Evergreen trees were planted on both sides of the main street. These were the symbolic trees of Green Shade Territory, green throughout the year, representing vitality and hope.
An honor guard carrying flags led the way in front, and a troop of guards surrounded the carriage.
Subjects dressed in splendid clothing filled the streets on both sides, cheering enthusiastically.
After learning that Sophie had not obtained the 【On the Verge of Losing Control】 entry, they were genuinely happy.
Colorful, pointed buildings were arranged side by side. As the carriage moved, they gradually became silhouettes of color, dissipating like clouds and smoke in the field of vision, replaced by new building complexes and unfamiliar faces.
“Lord Leon, you should wave to your subjects. This way, they will feel your friendliness.”
The heavily made-up and splendidly dressed Head of Internal Affairs, Karel Dennis, suggested.
“Of course.”
Leon raised his hand and waved stiffly, immediately receiving a more enthusiastic cheer.
Being a Lord for the first time, Leon was inevitably a bit unaccustomed.
But his hand waved more and more smoothly, feeling like he was capable again.
His One-Star Knight state allowed him to wave for half an hour without feeling tired.
Of course, he certainly wouldn’t do that; it would look too foolish.
Just interact occasionally to avoid the situation becoming too awkward.
Amidst the cheers and shouts, the luxurious carriage carrying the new Lord of Green Shade Territory and the Guardian Witch passed through the inner city wall, moving from the inner city to the outer city.
Karel Dennis introduced,
“Nobles live in the inner city, commoners live in the outer city. The inner wall is 15 meters high and 3 meters thick. If the outer city falls, the inner wall is the last refuge.”
Compared to the inner city, the buildings in the outer city were much more uniform in color, mainly black, blue, and gray. The subjects’ clothing was also simpler, mostly made of linen.
Women who cared about beauty adorned themselves with flowers, not jewels.
But their enthusiasm was even higher than that of the inner city nobles.
“Lord! Lord!”
“It’s the Ice Witch! The Ice Witch is here!”
“Lady Ice Witch, can you continue to protect us?”
Innocent children rushed forward together, but were stopped by the guards in front of the carriage.
At Leon’s signal, the guards withdrew the weapons they had placed in front of the children.
Sophie looked at them and nodded slightly.
A little girl excitedly gave the wild flowers in her hand to Sophie.
“Lady Ice Witch, please continue to protect us.”
Sophie accepted the wild flowers and nodded again.
The carriage continued forward. Leon saw Sophie carefully putting the wild flowers into her clothes pocket and said with a smile,
“You’ll smother it like that.”
Sophie, being receptive to advice, took the wild flowers out of her pocket and handed them to Leon.
Leon wove the wild flowers into a wreath and placed it on Sophie’s head.
“This way, its value can be shown.”
Sophie touched the wreath on her head. She liked it a little.
But she still had no expression.
Karel Dennis coughed twice, feeling that if he didn’t make a sound soon, he would be treated as air.
Anna and Annie simultaneously looked at Karel Dennis, their eyes as if they wanted to stab him.
Karel Dennis’s mouth twitched slightly, and he let out a proud cold snort through his nose.
Just maids, would I, the Head of Internal Affairs, be afraid?
Leon turned back, looked at Karel Dennis, and spread his hands,
“Sorry, Karel Dennis, I don’t have enough materials to make a flower wreath for you too.”
“Compared to these wild flowers, I prefer lilies, roses, and tulips.”
Karel Dennis said proudly.
The survivors of the merchant caravan from Blueberry Town were also among the crowd. They looked at Leon in the carriage in surprise.
They hadn’t expected that he was not only Lord Moria’s illegitimate son but had also directly inherited Moria’s position as Lord.
Their faces were full of disbelief and sincere regret about their attitude towards the Ice Witch previously.
“If I had known this would happen, I would have gone into the inner city with him and become friends.”
“Sigh, I missed a chance to soar.”
“We even impersonated Lord Moria’s illegitimate son before, he won’t hold a grudge, will he?”
While lamenting, they looked enviously at Leon in the luxurious carriage. Not only was he accompanied by the beautiful Ice Witch, but he also had two extra beautiful maids, and they were twin maids!
Just recently, when he was in Blueberry Territory, he was still an inconspicuous blacksmith apprentice, humbly begging the caravan captain to take him along.
Now the situation was completely different!
“After passing through this main street, we will reach the high wall. Before you arrived, the Ice Witch always lived in the high wall tower.”
Karel Dennis lifted a finger and said meaningfully.
Leon’s mouth twitched slightly. Yes, Miss Witch is living in my room now, so what?
“That’s the statue of City Lord Moria. It has been built for 30 years. If you don’t like it, we can tear it down and build yours. The height can be increased by another 5 meters.”
Karel Dennis was like a dedicated tour guide, introducing the various buildings of Green Shade Territory to Leon.
“That’s the Holy Cathedral. You’ve been in Green Shade Territory for so long and haven’t met the Bishop yet. Let me know when you have time, and I’ll arrange it.”
“That area is the pastry shop street. You wouldn’t want to know; it’s full of dirty men and women.”
Amidst Karel Dennis’s explanations, Leon finally arrived at the high wall.
Along the way, Anna and Annie remained quiet, only doing what maids should do.
For example, wiping Leon’s sweat, accepting the flowers from the subjects for him, or asking if he needed water.
Although Anna was very knowledgeable, she wouldn’t steal Karel Dennis’s spotlight at a time like this.
The height of the high wall was twice that of the inner wall, reaching 30 meters high, which reminded Leon of Attack on Titan for some reason.
The black high wall stretched as far as the eye could see. There were also magic defense formations on the wall, making it very spectacular.
Leon, Sophie, and Karel Dennis took the pulley lift and successfully ascended onto the high wall.
Looking at the slowly rising pulley lift, Leon started to think about the problem of generating electricity. Only with elevators could 30-story buildings become common. Stairs could only go up to the 8th floor at most.
Clearly, in this world of magic and swords, no one had yet developed electricity. Otherwise, the Lord’s Mansion wouldn’t still be using kerosene lamps.
There were a total of 4 lookout towers on the high wall, each capable of seeing the movements in the east, west, south, and north directions.
Normally, Sophie rested and patrolled in these lookout towers.
Of course, what she liked most was not staying inside the towers but walking aimlessly on the high wall.
So, after stepping onto the high wall, her mental state relaxed a lot, as if she had returned home. A hint of gentleness appeared in her eyes.
Although the high wall was 3 meters thick, Leon still felt a bit weak in the legs. Anna, noticing this, immediately stepped forward and quietly supported Leon.
From the high wall, one could overlook the entire view of Green Shade Territory, as well as the nearby villages and White Bone Forest.
But the weak-legged Leon was not in the mood to appreciate the scenery. He looked at Karel Dennis seriously,
“Why aren’t there railings on the high wall? How dangerous would it be if guards patrolling fell off?”
“Esteemed Lord, the high wall has not had railings since the beginning.”
Karel Dennis said.
“Safety first. Railings must be installed.”
“Yes, Lord Leon.”
The guards on the high wall all saluted Leon and developed a favorable impression of the young Lord.
Because he was the first person to care about the guards falling off.
“But, installing railings will be a considerable expense. We probably don’t have the money for it right now.”
Karel Dennis reminded him.
Leon turned back, looked at his overly pale face, and asked,
“When does tonight’s ball start?”
“8 o’clock.”
“Alright, inform the nobles that the ball has been moved. It will be held on the high wall. I will be waiting for them here.”
