- Chapter 7 - Be the Female Lead
Be the Female Lead
“Who is this?”
Kujima looked at the charming and lovely girl outside the shop, gathering from the conversation that she was someone Kimura knew.
“My girlfriend,” Kimura said calmly.
“Oh, so she’s Hayata’s girlfriend.”
Kujima suddenly understood, his gaze shifting between Asuka and Kimura.
Admittedly, judging by appearances alone, they looked quite compatible.
“Kujima-san, my girlfriend is here to pick me up, so I should head out first.”
Kimura took off the headband from his forehead and the apron around his waist, turned, and bid farewell to Kujima.
“Sure, take care on your way.”
Kimura’s voice brought Kujima back from his daze, nodding in response.
For some reason, he felt the girl standing outside was somewhat familiar, but he couldn’t recall where he had seen her.
This should be the first time he’s met Hayata’s girlfriend…
Perhaps it was just a misconception.
Kimura walked to Asuka’s side, lowering his head to look at the girl in front of him.
Water droplets adorned her fair cheeks, and her hair had become slightly damp.
Asuka lifted her head, smiled at him, and her crescent-shaped eyes curved.
Kimura took the umbrella handle from Asuka’s hand, feeling a warm sensation filling his heart.
“Did you run here?”
Asuka nodded obediently, “Mm.”
“The rain isn’t heavy. You can wait a while…”
“Mm.”
“Next time, you can take it slow.”
“Okay.”
Asuka’s long eyelashes twinkled in the lamplight, and her watery eyes gazed at him.
“I cooked dinner and am waiting for Hayata-chan.”
Kimura was momentarily surprised, then a gentle smile spread across his face.
“Let’s go home.”
“Just wait a moment.”
Asuka turned and walked towards the izakaya, under the puzzled gazes of Kimura and Kujima.
She approached Kujima, bowed gracefully, and said, “I’m truly grateful for Mr. Kujima’s care for Hayata-kun all this time.”
Kujima realized and quickly returned the gesture, “You’re too polite. Hayata has been a great help to the shop. Young people who are so capable are rare these days.”
After a brief exchange, Asuka bid farewell to Kujima and disappeared into the rain with Kimura.
Watching the two vanish into the distance, Kujima couldn’t help but sigh.
“Hayata really found an amazing girlfriend… but it feels like I’ve seen Hayata’s girlfriend somewhere. Strange, where could it be?”
Kujima scratched his head in confusion, pondering for a moment, but eventually gave up on figuring it out.
He walked to the dining table and began clearing the remnants. As he picked up the plate where the sweet potatoes were placed moments ago, a folded 1,000 yen bill caught his eye.
Kujima paused for a moment, then quickly realized it was the money Kimura left for the sweet potatoes.
“What’s this guy up to? I clearly told him it was on the house…”
……
“Did Hayata-chan have some drinks again?”
Under the umbrella, Kimura walked with Asuka.
Around them, raindrops fell diagonally, and the fine rain blurred the distant view, accompanied by the soothing sound of rain.
Asuka leaned her nose closer to Kimura’s coat, and her nose gently twitched.
“I had a little, sorry.”
Kimura scratched his cheek with his finger, glancing at Asuka’s expression from the corner of his eye.
“Why would Hayata-chan apologize?”
Asuka raised her head, blinking her adorable eyes in confusion.
“Because… I drank?”
“Pfft.”
Unexpectedly, at the next moment, Asuka couldn’t help but burst into laughter, covering her lips with her fair hand.
“Why are you laughing?”
“Hayata-chan thought I’m the unreasonable type of girlfriend?”
“Huh? Why do you ask that?”
Kimura tilted the umbrella slightly towards Asuka.
“Hayata-chan, while you work hard outside to earn money, do you think I would scold you, who works hard, for drinking?”
“But didn’t you say before…”
“Well, Hayata-chan, I believe you know how to handle things.”
As Asuka gazed at the water splashing beneath her feet, she lightly tucked the damp strands of hair behind her ear, and her clear voice reached Kimura’s ears.
Oops, his girlfriend was a bit too adorable.
Kimura swallowed and suddenly stopped in his tracks.
“Almost forgot.”
“What?”
Asuka took a step forward, then hesitated, looking at him with a puzzled expression.
Kimura mysteriously smiled, unzipped his coat, and reached into his pocket, pulling out the bag containing the roasted sweet potatoes.
The plastic bag was covered in fine water droplets, and you could vaguely see three dark objects inside.
“Take it.”
“Huh?”
Looking at what Kimura handed her, Asuka took it in her hands in a flurry.
The warmth in her hands felt like holding a small heater in this damp and cold weather.
“Roasted sweet potatoes!”
In the next moment, Asuka recognized what was in the bag and exclaimed in delight.
“I remember Asuka likes them, so I thought of packing some to take home…” Kimura paused for a moment, then hesitated, “I remembered correctly, right?”
“Thank you, Hayata-chan.”
Asuka hugged the bag tightly to her chest and expressed her happiness.
Kumura’s lips curled slightly, and it seemed he didn’t remember wrong.
“Let’s eat them when we get home.”
“Okay.”
Asuka looked at Kimura with sparkling eyes, and her steps inexplicably became lighter.
In the gloomy and dim sky, pedestrians with umbrellas hurriedly passed by in the drizzle.
The umbrella overhead seemed to isolate everything, leaving only her and Kimura walking in this small space.
Asuka slowed her steps slightly, keeping herself half a step behind Kimura.
She pursed her lips, quietly gazing at the handsome face of the young man, her expression gentle.
A faint rustling sound came from the back of her hand. Before Kimura could react, a soft and warm little hand had already rested on the hand holding the umbrella.
Kimura turned his head to look beside him, meeting Asuka’s bright and starry eyes.
……
Back at the rental house, even though Kimura knew in advance that Asuka had prepared dinner at home, he couldn’t help but be surprised when he saw the table full of dishes.
The feeling of coming home after a day’s work to find a hot meal waiting for him made Kimura feel a bit surreal.
Since coming to this world, it seemed like the first time he could have a meal at night when he returned to the rental house.
Amidst Asuka’s calls to have dinner, Kimura finally came back to his senses.
“Itadakimasu.”
“Itadakimasu.”
“…”
After dinner, Kimura stood in front of the kitchen island, washing the dishes.
Asuka’s two small, snow-white and tender feet stood on the edge of the chair, holding a spoon and eating sweet potatoes.
Outside the window, the twilight was deepening, and the bright lights inside enveloped the two.
“Asuka, I quit those part-time jobs today.”
Kimura’s clear voice rang out.
The spoon in Asuka’s hand suddenly stopped, she looked up at Kimura, smiled, made a soft “Mm,” and then lowered her head again to continue playing with the sweet potatoes.
Huh? Is that it?
That wasn’t the reaction he imagined. Kimura stared at the girl in front of him, and her response seemed a bit different from what he expected.
“Why doesn’t Asuka ask why?” Kimura hesitated.
Asuka tilted her head back, looking at him with dewy eyes.
“Why?”
“I have to submit the script for my graduation project in the film director program by the end of next month. I need to finish writing it by the end of this month and start shooting next month. I might not have time for part-time jobs.”
“Okay.” Asuka nodded, as if afraid that Kumura would overthink, she added, “Whatever decision Hayata-chan makes, I’ll support it.”
“Then, Asuka, be the female lead.”
