- Chapter 23 - The Man Who Grew Nine Tails
Yan Jin looked utterly confused.
Before he could say anything, Li Cheng’s hand was already on his face.
Her fingertips gently brushed and traced his features, slow and deliberate.
For more than three thousand years, Li Cheng had believed she’d been abandoned by the world—by everyone.
And yet now, without warning, she had found someone who could awaken all nine tails for her.
So there really was someone in this world who could love her.
That feeling was like sitting in a warm cabin, watching the snow fall outside in the freezing wind—softening the deepest, coldest parts of her heart.
“Thank you,” Li Cheng whispered, her voice light and fragile.
Yan Jin’s confusion deepened. “Thank me? For what?”
Li Cheng withdrew her hand. Thank you for loving me.
“Thank you for the food you made earlier. It was really good.”
She turned and walked out of the dining room.
Heading straight for the guest room, Li Cheng lay flat on the bed.
Yan Jin had awakened nine tails for her. It was almost beyond belief.
But another thought crept in—staring up at the ceiling, she wondered: Then why was Yan Xun’s Binding Mark black?
“No idea…”
“But that’s exactly why you have to save Yan Jin, Fox Host! Across the heavens and the earth, through all the ages, only Yan Jin’s soul can resonate with yours enough to awaken nine tails. You’re destined to be bound together.”
After a pause, A-Keng’s voice turned curious. “Fox Host, do you… like Yan Jin?”
Li Cheng’s gaze turned unfocused.
She thought of Yan Jin’s face.
Did she like him?
With a flick of her wrist, a silver ring appeared in her hand. “You know,” she said softly, “I once said that whoever could awaken nine tails for me would receive this Heartlock Ring. It’s made from my own fang. It brings good fortune, and it can summon me. It’s meant for my future husband.”
“Then… are you going to give it to Yan Jin?”
Li Cheng lifted the ring up before her eyes. The sunlight streaming through the window made it gleam like something far too beautiful for this world.
She sighed. “It’s for my husband. Once I’ve made him mine, I’ll give it to him.”
“Fox Host, I’ve seen right through him. Both of Yan Jin’s personalities have one thing in common—they both treat you like their wife.”
Li Cheng’s face immediately darkened.
She spun the ring once between her fingers, and it dissolved into a thin wisp of smoke.
Just as she was about to start cursing, her phone chimed.
She took it out—it was Wang Qi messaging her on WeChat, urging her to post on Weibo.
With another sigh, Li Cheng stood up and walked out to the living room.
Yan Jin was sitting there, reading through a stack of documents.
Li Cheng took the seat across from him.
He seemed focused, busy. For some reason, that made her hesitant to interrupt.
Yan Jin lifted his head slightly, catching her expression before she could speak. “What is it?”
“Can you take a picture of me?” she asked, already handing him her phone.
Yan Jin blinked, taking it. “How do you want it taken?”
“Just make it look good. I need it for Weibo.”
She adjusted her pose—cold eyes, that untouchable aura that said don’t mess with me.
Yan Jin frowned as he opened the camera. “If it’s for your fans, they’d probably prefer seeing you smile.”
Li Cheng stretched her lips into a grin.
Yan Jin gave a dry chuckle. “That looks half-hearted.”
He studied her for a moment, then added, “Maybe think of something that actually makes you happy.”
Something that made her happy…
The happiest thing she could remember in years was someone awakening nine tails for her.
Li Cheng turned her head toward him—and smiled.
Her head tilted ever so slightly, the softness in her expression blooming like sunlight through spring petals.
That unguarded smile made Yan Jin’s heart skip.
He almost forgot to press the shutter.
Catching himself, he quickly snapped several photos in succession, then handed her the phone.
“All done.”
Li Cheng glanced through the pictures, a little amazed—they really were better than anything she’d taken herself.
She sent them to Wang Qi, who immediately replied with a few thumbs-up emojis and praise.
Choosing the gentlest one, she posted it on Weibo with the caption:
Thank you all for your concern. I’m doing great. Work officially starts in a few days. Good night, everyone.
A few moments after she hit post, a phone on the coffee table lit up.
It flashed: Your favorite account, Li Cheng fox, just posted a Weibo one minute ago!
Yan Jin picked it up, skimmed through two WeChat messages, then opened Weibo as if by accident.
Within minutes, the post already had thousands of comments.
He clicked the photo open, enlarged it—and saved it.
Across from him, Li Cheng rested her chin in her palm, watching curiously. What’s he being all sneaky about?
“Fox Host! Yan Jin just saved your Weibo picture! He really, really likes you! I’m crying for this beautiful love story!”
Li Cheng’s lips curved into a helpless, beautiful smile.
He put on that aloof act so well, yet secretly saved her picture.
She suddenly stood up, crossed the room, and sat down right beside him.
Leaning in close, she said, “Let’s take a picture together.”
Yan Jin looked surprised. “Why?”
“For memory’s sake, of course.”
“Then again, forget it,” she said, pretending to move away.
“We’ll take it.” Yan Jin caught her by the wrist.
Li Cheng grinned, grabbed his phone, and switched to selfie mode.
She held up a peace sign and flashed a bright, dazzling smile. The two took a couple of photos together.
When they finished, Yan Jin said seriously, “Give me your WeChat. I’ll send them to you later.”
“Mm.” Li Cheng nodded.
Still, she felt a little anxious on his behalf. At this pace, it’d take him another few lifetimes to actually catch up to her.
“Fox Host! You still say you don’t like him, but you’re literally helping him chase you!”
Li Cheng’s expression darkened. “He’s mine. I’ll treat him well for life.”
“But he doesn’t want to be your wife.”
Li Cheng: “…”
She fell silent, leaning back on the sofa to rest her eyes.
Meanwhile, Yan Jin wasn’t working anymore.
He’d even retrieved the photo that Yan Xun had deleted before—and then set their newly taken picture as his phone wallpaper.
Absolutely insane.
It felt like Li Cheng had some kind of spell on him.
The more he struggled against it, the deeper he sank.
It wasn’t just affection.
It was madness in the name of love.
With Li Cheng beside him, he couldn’t focus on work at all.
He half-heartedly shuffled papers for a while, only to realize she’d already dozed off on the sofa.
Her breathing was calm and even.
Yan Jin reached out, brushing a fingertip over her lashes—delicate as a butterfly’s wings, unreal in their beauty.
A tingling warmth spread down his hand.
“I think… I really do like you.”
“Fox Host! He’s touching you again!”
