- Chapter 39 - The Fox Without a Tail
Yan Xun didn’t say another word. He just scooped Little Fox into his arms and strode toward the car.
“Put me down!” Little Fox pushed against his chest, but after being soaked in the rain for so long, his limbs felt weak and powerless.
Yan Xun knew that Little Fox never responded well to force; softness worked better on him. So he softened his tone.
“Let’s go back first. Once the rain stops, I’ll help you find it.”
Little Fox’s gaze was unfocused, his expression dull and lost.
[Fox Host, let’s go back for now. The danger level outside is too high. Once the rain eases, we can come back to search.]
Feeling drained, Little Fox didn’t resist anymore, but there was no warmth in Yan Xun’s hold—it was controlling, suffocating. He didn’t like it at all.
“Put me down. I’ll walk on my own.” His voice was soft, weightless, almost floating.
“Quit talking nonsense.” Yan Xun’s voice came out rough and low.
Little Fox gripped his shirt weakly, eyes dull and void of light. “I don’t want you to hold me.”
“Hah.” Yan Xun’s jaw tightened in anger. “Don’t want me to hold you? You want Yan Jin to do it instead? Didn’t you say you liked me? Shouldn’t you be happy I’m holding you?”
Yan Xun couldn’t figure him out. The man had been the one to provoke him first, yet now acted cold and distant for no reason at all.
Little Fox quietly replied, his tone neither defensive nor flattering—just a simple truth from the heart.
“You’re clearly the same person. Why do you treat me like this?”
His eyes, already damp from the rain, shimmered wetly in the dim light. Something trembled in Yan Xun’s chest.
His steps faltered, suddenly feeling heavy, uncertain of what to say.
“I’m not Yan Jin.” After a long pause, he finally spoke.
He didn’t put Little Fox down. Instead, he carried him straight into the car. Both of them were drenched through, and as soon as Little Fox sat down, his body began to tremble.
Yan Xun turned on the heater. His gaze lingered on Little Fox—he sat there silently, soaked and pitiful, like a small creature caught in a storm.
“Ah-choo…” Little Fox sneezed, his head feeling foggy. His stomach ached from hunger, and exhaustion tugged at his eyelids.
Yan Xun tossed a jacket at him. “You’re not in great shape to begin with, but you still have to push yourself, huh?”
Little Fox leaned his head against the car door, eyes closed, his breathing shallow.
His body felt cold.
And his heart was even colder.
[Oh no! When the Fox Host’s emotions drop too low, he sometimes reverts to his original form and curls up into a ball!]
[Fox Host is about to…]
[Turn into a little fox…]
[Ahh! Fox Host is sad, he’s heartbroken! Sob sob sob…]
[It’s all Yan Xun’s fault! I’m so mad!]
Ah Keng hadn’t even finished ranting when—
Yan Xun’s hand on the steering wheel suddenly twitched.
Because the person who’d just been sitting in the passenger seat…
Had turned into a small red fox.
!!!
The little fox’s fur was thick and soft. He was curled up tightly, his pale tail wrapped around his body, even covering his eyes. Only two delicate fox ears peeked out.
Yan Xun looked from the car window back to the tiny creature beside him.
“What the—!”
“He’s really a fox spirit!”
“Aw…”
The little fox let out a faint, miserable whine, soft and drawn-out, like he was pouting.
Yan Xun took a deep breath. His voice came out half in disbelief, half resigned. “So… you get mad and just turn into a fox?”
He raised a hand and cautiously patted the fox’s head. The little fox’s eyes flickered open to look at him, faint light shimmering within.
“Damn…”
“You’re crying now?”
Yan Xun froze midair, completely at a loss.
“Hey—don’t cry, okay? I told you I’d find it. Don’t cry… You’re making it look like I… like I bullied you or something.”
“Mrrp…” The little fox buried his face back into his tail, trembling faintly. His fur was still damp, clumping together in wet patches.
Yan Xun draped the jacket over him again and turned the heat up to the highest setting as he started the car.
A person… turning into a fox out of anger.
Unbelievable.
But Yan Xun had long known there was something off about Little Fox. He’d stopped thinking of him as a normal person a long time ago.
So instead of panicking, he actually felt a flicker of excitement.
A tiny, adorable fox like this—easy to tease, easy to hold.
He grabbed a tissue and wiped the tears from the little fox’s cheeks. “Come on, don’t cry…”
But the little fox just kept his head down, refusing to respond.
“I didn’t know the ring was yours, alright? Please don’t cry…” Yan Xun’s voice grew softer, almost guilty.
He couldn’t believe he’d made something this cute cry.
But the little fox ignored him the whole way home.
When they finally arrived at the villa, Yan Xun still felt dazed. He got out, still holding the little fox carefully in his arms.
Both of them were drenched from head to toe. Water still dripped from Yan Xun’s hair as he stepped inside.
He carried the fox straight to the bathroom.
Looking down at the shivering creature in his arms, he frowned. “Can you understand me?”
The little fox didn’t respond, his red eyes misty and dazed.
Yan Xun sighed, placed him in the bathtub, and washed him clean. He’d planned to just toss him onto a towel afterward—but something stopped him.
So instead, he grabbed a hairdryer and carefully blew the fox’s fur dry.
“You’re such a handful. I really don’t get what Yan Jin ever saw in you.”
“Chirp chirp…”
Hearing the tiny sound, Yan Xun smirked. The fox seemed to like him a little. He curled his lips in amusement, setting the now-fluffy fox on the dry countertop.
When everything was finally done, Yan Xun began stripping off his own soaked clothes.
He glanced down at the fox. “Well? Pretty impressive, huh?”
The little fox: ……………
After showering, Yan Xun carried the fox out and placed him on the sofa.
But the fox stayed silent, unmoving.
“Don’t tell me you’re not changing back until I find that ring?”
They had been struggling outside for hours. When he checked the clock, it was already two in the morning.
Rain still battered the windows, loud and relentless.
Suddenly, the little fox jumped off the sofa and darted toward the door.
Yan Xun thought he was going out to search for the ring again.
Panicking, he reached out to grab him—his hand caught the fox’s tail.
And just like that…
He pulled too hard.
The tail came clean off.
He had actually torn off the little fox’s tail!
The fox froze, stunned—his once-luxurious tail gone, leaving only a tiny bare stump.
“Ah!” Yan Xun stood there trembling, the red tail still in his hand.
