- Chapter 41 - Bitter Medicine and Sweeter Lies
“How many times have you said that already? Even if you’re not tired of it, I’m sick of hearing it.”
With that, Li Cheng flopped back onto the bed.
Suddenly, a heavy weight pressed down on her.
“Ah—”
Yan Xun held her shoulders firmly.
“Do you think I’m joking?”
Li Cheng’s gaze was hazy, her voice soft and sticky. “Young Master Yan, if you’re going to do it, hurry up. I’m trying to sleep.”
Yan Xun: ???
Her words inexplicably set his temper ablaze. He grabbed her chin.
“Li Cheng, you’re already with Yan Jin, yet you’re still trying to seduce me? What the hell is your game?”
Li Cheng blinked slowly, her eyelids heavy, and opened her eyes again. “You’re my boyfriend.”
The corner of Yan Xun’s mouth twitched. “The hell I am!”
“Yes, you are.” Li Cheng pulled the blanket close, curling into it. Everything in her mind was spinning, growing and shrinking in turns. Even her voice lacked strength.
“Your boyfriend is Yan Jin. I’ve got nothing to do with that!”
“Then give Yan Jin back to me…” Li Cheng’s eyes grew faintly red.
Maybe it was the fever, but she looked softer and more delicate than usual—nothing like her usual cold, untouchable self.
Yan Xun couldn’t help but stare for a moment. But when her words sank in, his anger reignited.
He froze, caught between thoughts, not knowing what to say.
“Are you out of your damn mind?” he finally spat.
Li Cheng’s long lashes fluttered. Her throat felt unbearably dry and hot, so she ignored him and changed the subject. “I want some water…”
“If you want water, get it yourself.” Yan Xun snapped. No one had ever dared to order him around like this before.
“…Then I won’t drink.” Li Cheng curled up again. She really didn’t have the strength to move. All she wanted was to sleep.
“You—!” Yan Xun cursed under his breath.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that if he didn’t go downstairs to get her that water, it would somehow be a sin.
So—
Yan Xun went downstairs, poured her a glass, and came back.
When he returned to the bedside, she was already asleep.
He touched her forehead—it was even hotter than before.
Frowning, he pulled her into his arms, thinking about how to get her to take the medicine.
“Li Cheng? Li Cheng?”
“Wake up… hey!”
After shaking her twice, she finally stirred, half-opening her eyes in a daze.
“Yan Jin…” she mumbled softly.
Her voice was lazy and sweet, soft enough to melt through the air.
Yan Xun’s expression darkened again, though this time not as angrily as before.
What he was thinking now was whether she would obediently take her medicine if it were Yan Jin telling her to.
He’d always thought Yan Jin’s polite exterior was nothing more than a mask—underneath that calm and courteous face was a calculating, manipulative man. A wolf in silk, hiding blades behind his smile.
Yan Xun had never cared to pretend.
But tonight, he did.
He lowered his voice, softening it deliberately. “Mm.”
Half-conscious, Li Cheng seemed soothed by that gentleness. She burrowed against his chest, wrapping her arms loosely around his waist.
Yan Xun’s heartbeat went haywire—fast and unsteady, like the crash after a sprint.
Anyone would lose their composure at this.
If she was this soft and sweet around Yan Jin, no wonder he couldn’t resist her. Hell, even Yan Xun himself could barely hold it together!
He picked up the medicine from the nightstand and said gently, “Drink the medicine.”
Li Cheng squirmed in his arms, pushing at the cup with her fingertip. “Don’t want it…”
“Be good.” Yan Xun felt his patience cracking. He wanted to pry her mouth open and pour it in.
“If you drink it, you won’t feel so bad. Drink it and then sleep, okay?”
Li Cheng frowned, her face the picture of resistance. Yan Xun brought the cup to her lips. “Come on. Be good. Drink it, and I’ll buy you candy.”
After a long internal struggle, she finally parted her lips and took a sip—then scowled.
Yan Xun sighed. “Just one more sip, and it’s done.”
Li Cheng knew that Yan Jin was always purposeful in everything he did.
If he wanted her to drink, he wouldn’t stop until she did. So, deciding it was better to get it over with, she finished the medicine in one go.
Yan Xun frowned at the sight of her grimacing. “Is it really that bitter?”
Li Cheng glared at him, then reached up to wrap her fingers around his neck, her eyes hazy and alluring.
Her lips—soft and red as pomegranate seeds—parted slightly, revealing a glimpse of tender pink within.
“You taste it…”
Yan Xun’s fingers clenched tight. Watching her lean in like that—offering herself, tempting him—he actually wanted to kiss her.
And then she did it for him, pressing her lips to his, looping her hand behind his neck.
She just wanted him to taste that bitterness too.
When she pulled back, she looked at him seriously. “It’s bitter, isn’t it?”
Yan Xun froze. Bitter, my ass—it was sweet! Damn it!
Before he even processed the thought, his body moved first. He grabbed her waist and pulled her close again, kissing her hard.
Dominant. Unrelenting.
“Mmh—”
Li Cheng thought, tonight, Yan Jin felt different—rougher, harsher, not gentle at all.
She tilted her head back. “I… I can’t breathe…”
“Yan Jin—mm…”
“Ah—”
She’d barely said his name when he bit her.
Two minutes later, Yan Xun finally let her go. Li Cheng was gasping for breath, her face flushed crimson.
“Between Yan Jin and me, who do you actually like?” His eyes were sharp and dangerous.
Li Cheng’s gaze was distant and heavy, her body still feverish. The medicine didn’t seem to help—she was still dazed, floating between heaven and earth.
Resting her head against him, she murmured softly, “…You’re the same person.”
“No.”
“Yes,” she insisted faintly.
“So you like us both?” He tried to keep his temper under control.
Li Cheng’s lips quivered. “He doesn’t listen. He bullies me…”
In her feverish haze, she was saying everything, as if in front of Yan Jin she had nothing to hide. Her voice was light, almost fragile. “He’ll… hurt you…”
“What do you mean?” Yan Xun’s mind spun. He knew she wasn’t human, so it wasn’t strange for her to sense things beyond normal comprehension.
Her words came in pieces, drifting in and out. “He doesn’t love me… but if he ever does… I can save you…”
Yan Xun’s knuckles cracked under his own grip.
He didn’t understand everything, but one thing was clear—everything Li Cheng had said and done before, every flirtatious look, every teasing touch—it had all been deliberate!
It wasn’t affection. It was manipulation.
She thought she could “save” Yan Jin by toying with him!
“So you treated Yan Jin well, cared for him, even got hurt for him—all just to make him fall for you?”
“You didn’t feel a damn thing, did you? It was all a lie?”
Li Cheng heard his voice rising, turning sharp and accusing. She finally understood what he was thinking.
“No…” she tried to say, but barely got the word out before—
Yan Xun’s breathing turned ragged. He shoved her down.
And in that moment, she knew—this wasn’t Yan Jin.
Yan Xun’s voice was harsh and furious. “You’d really do anything for him, wouldn’t you?”
“Am I just your toy?”
He pinned her down against the bed.
“Why are you playing with me?”
Li Cheng’s face flushed deep red. Her head spun even worse.
“Yan Xun…” She was sure of it now—it was him.
He had her trapped beneath him, his breath hitting her face, raw and violent.
“Li Cheng,” he growled, “playing with me comes with a price.”
