- Chapter 6 - The Fox’s Secret
Li Cheng’s eyes flew wide open as his stomach lurched violently—he gagged, but it was too late.
His abdomen cramped, nausea surged, and dizziness hit him all at once.
When he tried to stand, his elbow brushed against a glass fruit bowl on the table.
It was an elegant, modern piece—clear glass with an artistic design.
The moment he bumped it, the bowl slid off the table.
With a loud “clang!”, it shattered on the floor.
Li Cheng’s hand instinctively pressed down on the broken edge—cutting his palm open in the process.
“Hss—!”
What now? What am I supposed to do now?
【Fox Host, even though you’re a god, right now you don’t have a tail, and most of your divine power is gone. You’re basically no different from an ordinary animal.】
【Chocolate is toxic to you—it might cause poisoning and could even destabilize your human form. This is serious!】
【We need to get you to a hospital. Now!】
Li Cheng tried to brace himself on the table to stand again, but his limbs felt like jelly.
Suddenly, a strong hand grabbed his wrist. He blinked up—Yan Jin was right beside him, though Li Cheng hadn’t even noticed when he’d approached.
Yan Jin’s expression was unreadable, his brows drawn tight. “What’s wrong with you?”
Before Li Cheng could answer, Yan Jin opened a drawer beneath the table and took out a first-aid kit.
Without another word, he quickly wrapped Li Cheng’s bleeding hand with gauze.
He didn’t speak at all while working—his movements were neat, efficient, and oddly gentle.
Li Cheng’s bright, alluring eyes locked on Yan Jin’s face. A faint purple light shimmered in them—an otherworldly glint.
It was the Fox Clan’s innate gift: the Heart Enchantment Spell—a charm that could quietly bend human will.
“Yan Jin…”
“Look at me.”
Li Cheng had meant to use it just enough to make Yan Jin take him to the hospital.
But before he could say another word, he felt himself lifted clean off the ground.
Yan Jin’s low voice came next: “I’m taking you to the hospital.”
Li Cheng was stunned. What kind of posture is this?!
Being bridal-carried by a human?
Completely humiliating.
He struggled weakly, his pride kicking in. “Put me down!”
Yan Jin’s tone was sharp. He only tightened his grip. “Don’t move.”
Li Cheng’s body was weak, his palms slick with sweat.
His face had gone pale, and his heart was beating erratically—too fast, too loud.
Unbelievable, he thought bitterly. I’ve fallen so low I can’t even walk—no different from a mortal beast. The heavens will laugh themselves sick when they hear about this.
When he realized there was no breaking free, he gave up resisting and let Yan Jin carry him outside.
There were two cars parked in the villa’s driveway—a black Bentley and a Lamborghini. Two entirely different vibes, both equally expensive.
Yan Jin opened the Bentley’s back door and gently set him inside, then buckled his seat belt.
The space between them narrowed—close enough that Li Cheng could feel the warmth of his breath.
The faint tickle against his cheek made him avert his gaze.
His chest rose and fell sharply as he closed his eyes, trying to steady his breathing.
“Your stomach hurts?” Yan Jin asked, frowning slightly, his voice uncharacteristically soft.
Li Cheng nodded, then shook his head, his tone heavy and pained. “Everything hurts…”
Yan Jin touched his forehead—it was burning. “You have a fever.”
To Li Cheng, that sentence meant something entirely different.
He slapped Yan Jin’s hand away. “You’re the one in heat.”
“Just drive. Don’t touch me.”
Then he shut his eyes again, agitation simmering beneath his skin.
It’s just a few pieces of chocolate. Never again—never touching that cursed stuff again.
Yan Jin, seeing how miserable he looked, reached into the car’s small cooler and pulled out an ice pack. He handed it to Li Cheng. “Here. Hold this—it’ll help.”
Li Cheng took it obediently—then immediately shoved it into his mouth.
Yan Jin grabbed his wrist and covered his mouth with his other hand. “Are you out of your mind? You can’t eat that!”
Li Cheng glared up at him, eyes glassy and full of unspoken resentment.
From his lips came a soft, muffled “Chyuun…”
His voice slurred—half-conscious, words dissolving into small, animal-like sounds.
Yan Jin froze.
Li Cheng’s eyes, hazy and unfocused, still carried a trace of childish grievance, the kind seen in little creatures denied what they wanted.
Yan Jin’s heartbeat stuttered.
Cute.
The thought hit him before he could stop it. He immediately rejected it.
Am I losing my mind? Cute? He’s a man.
Yan Jin shoved the ice pack back into Li Cheng’s hands, coaxing him in a low tone. “You can’t eat this. Just hold it—it’s for cooling down.”
Then he quickly stepped out of the back seat and closed the door.
Li Cheng sat there, clutching the ice pack, too weak to protest. The car sped down the road, fast enough to make his head spin.
At the hospital, they ran every test imaginable—but the results all came back clean.
The doctor prescribed only some fever reducers and mild stomach medication.
“Take these with warm water and get plenty of rest,” the elderly doctor told Yan Jin kindly.
Yan Jin, seeing Li Cheng swaying unsteadily, asked with concern, “Are you sure he’s fine? Should we run more tests?”
“No need,” the doctor replied with a wave of his hand. “Just monitor him closely.”
Li Cheng leaned against the wall, intent on leaving. But before he could take more than two steps, Yan Jin swooped in and lifted him up again.
“I can walk on my own.”
“You mean crawl?” Yan Jin shot back flatly.
Li Cheng glared at him weakly, realizing he didn’t have the strength to argue.
He met Yan Jin’s eyes, his thoughts spinning sluggishly.
If he ever finds out what I really am… will he still be safe from me?
The question lingered even as his consciousness began to blur. His fingers curled around Yan Jin’s collar, and he murmured faintly,
“Not this hospital… You should’ve… taken me to a veterinary clinic.”
Yan Jin glanced down at him, confused, as Li Cheng mumbled something incoherent under his breath.
His voice was soft—almost adorable—like a small pet trying to speak.
After a moment of sleepy murmuring, four distinct words slipped from between his teeth: “I’m canine species.”
Yan Jin’s brows furrowed deeper.
He was convinced the fever had fried Li Cheng’s brain.
Li Cheng squirmed slightly in his arms, pressing his head against Yan Jin’s chest, voice a whisper of wind. “I’m… a fox…”
Yan Jin: “…What?”
His eyes widened. He wasn’t sure he’d heard correctly.
“What did you just say?” His tone darkened. “Are you out of your mind from acting too much?”
Li Cheng’s fingers twitched weakly at his collar but he was too exhausted to respond.
Yan Jin placed him in the back seat again—this time driving toward the central hospital, farther across the city.
The gastroenterology department there was one of the best in the capital.
Li Cheng gasped weakly, “Go back… I just want to sleep… I’m tired…”
He had already abandoned the idea of letting Yan Jin see his transformation—it would be too terrifying.
If Yan Jin died from shock, that would be even more troublesome.
He’d survive—worst case, he’d lose his human form for a few hours.
Tilting his head, he asked the system weakly, Can you block the pain for me? It really hurts.
【Fox Host, I don’t have that level of authorization yet.】
“Nnngh…” Li Cheng groaned, pain thick in his voice.
A strange numbness spread through his head, and he felt something shifting—two soft, pointed shapes starting to emerge from his scalp.
His fox ears.
“Ah—ahhh no, no!” Li Cheng clamped his hands over his head, panicked and clumsy.
Ears! They’re coming out—!
He darted a glance at Yan Jin driving up front—thankfully, the man hadn’t noticed.
System, I—I—my ears are out! I’m turning into a beast!
【Yes, Fox Host. Very fluffy. Extremely cute.】
Is that really your focus right now?!
【Fox Host, your cuteness was the main reason I picked you as my host.】
Li Cheng rolled his eyes so hard he nearly passed out. I can’t hold it much longer…
Do you think I’ll scare him to death?
【Unlikely. But… not impossible.】
“What’s wrong?” Yan Jin noticed him clutching his head and frowned. “We’re almost at the hospital. Hold on a little longer.”
Li Cheng shook his head weakly. “Go home… I just want to sleep…”
“Headache?” Yan Jin pressed.
If only it were just a headache, Li Cheng thought miserably, still clutching his head. Out loud, all he could manage was a faint, “Yeah…”
His voice was so weak it barely counted as speech.
Yan Jin hit the accelerator, driving even faster.
About half an hour later, Li Cheng couldn’t control his pulse anymore.
He bit his lip and whispered to the system, A-Keng, protect me. I can’t hold my human form.
All this… from a few pieces of chocolate. What cosmic joke is this? I’ve really hit rock bottom.
【Don’t worry, Fox Host. I won’t let anyone harm you. If it becomes dangerous, I’ll transfer you to the next world immediately.】
Good…
Li Cheng’s breathing slowed—heavier, deeper.
Then, all at once, a faint shimmer of light spread across his body.
The seat belt slipped loose.
In the blink of an eye, the man in the back seat vanished—replaced by a small, radiant red fox curled up against the leather seat.
Technically, not bald-tailed—he had one, though it was clearly fake, an accessory he’d bought on Heaven’s black market.
Like a human wearing a wig—Li Cheng, ever vain, would never tolerate being seen without a perfect tail.
The color didn’t quite match his body—a pale rose tint instead of red—but still dazzlingly beautiful, nothing like any earthly animal.
“Chyu… chyu…” came a soft whimper.
“Mnn…” another faint sound followed.
The little fox huddled into a ball, trembling slightly, eyes glinting with wary alertness.
Then—
“Screech—!”
The Bentley’s tires shrieked against the road, sparks flying.
Yan Jin slammed the brakes.
The world fell into stunned silence.
