- Chapter 104 - The Fox Host’s Answer to Love
Li Cheng’s fingers twitched slightly where they clasped Yuan Zheng’s hand.
Another way?
What way?
His body trembled faintly. The chill still hadn’t faded from his bones.
Moments ago, he’d been so cold he could barely feel anything at all.
After a shiver ran through him, he asked before he could stop himself, “What way?”
Yuan Zheng’s lips curved, his voice carrying a teasing warmth. “For example… if you take me to see your fox den, it’ll be warmer there.”
Li Cheng: ???
What is he saying?
And why did he—somehow—understand exactly what he meant?
Yuan Zheng, seeing the little fox still lazily leaning in his arms, only smiled faintly and kept walking forward.
Eventually, the two of them disappeared around a bend, leaving behind a faint shimmer of spiritual light that drifted through the air like a dissolving tail.
In the blink of an eye, even the scent in the wind changed.
When Li Cheng lifted his eyes, he realized Yuan Zheng had actually brought him to Jiujing Mountain.
Before him stretched a vast sea of crimson swallowtail blossoms, their petals fluttering like silk in the wind. The air was filled with the fragrance of plum-like sweetness—a scent he knew well.
The little fox’s home was here.
And he loved it here.
As warmth slowly returned to his limbs, Li Cheng wriggled in Yuan Zheng’s arms. “Put me down.”
Yuan Zheng refused instantly. “The ground’s cold. I’ll hold you.”
Li Cheng pushed against his shoulder and twisted slightly. “Put me down.”
In the process, he brushed somewhere he shouldn’t have.
Yuan Zheng pinched his waist lightly. “Don’t move.” His voice dropped, rough with restraint—he was certain the little fox had no idea how tempting he looked.
After a beat, Yuan Zheng finally let him down.
Li Cheng stood ankle-deep among the flowers, glancing around.
Beyond the swaying bloom field lay the small house that had once belonged to the fox.
Barefoot, he walked forward two steps—then suddenly dropped down into the blossoms and, in the next second, transformed back into his true form: a small curled-up ball of fur nestled among red petals.
Yuan Zheng walked over quietly.
His fingers trembled faintly as he looked down at the tiny fox, curled tight in a perfect circle. His heart ached, sharp and constant.
He’s angry…
When the little fox was angry, he always turned back into his true form.
Yuan Zheng crouched beside him, sitting down on the grass.
He ran his hand gently through the fox’s fur, then began weaving a small flower crown from the swallowtail blossoms nearby.
When it was done, he placed it on the fox’s head.
The delicate petals glistened faintly with dew, making the little creature look even more lively and adorable.
“Can I hold you?” Yuan Zheng asked softly.
The little fox didn’t respond.
“Let me explain.”
The fox glanced at him once, then turned his head away.
Yuan Zheng took that as permission and carefully lifted him into his arms.
He rubbed the top of the fox’s head. “I didn’t lie to you.”
The little fox: continues ignoring him.
Yuan Zheng continued anyway, his tone low and calm. “When you bit me back then, the heart-sealing spell turned black because my divine soul was incomplete. I was missing two fragments.”
“It wasn’t because I didn’t like you.”
At those words, a faint light flickered in the fox’s dim eyes. Yuan Zheng adjusted the flower crown resting between his ears.
“It’s because I do like you.”
Yuan Zheng’s voice was steady, sincere—like spring water flowing through mist, carrying a husky tenderness that brushed against the heart.
“I’ve always liked you.”
“And I’ll only ever like you.”
The little fox stared up at him, the tips of his eyes tinged with soft autumn red.
Yuan Zheng said he liked him.
Not that he didn’t.
The little fox’s mood brightened, though he still refused to show too much.
Yuan Zheng pinched his furry cheek gently. “I already lost two soul fragments. And to stay with you, I had to pull the rest out, too. You really are the most heartless creature in this world.”
He sighed. “But that’s all right. Foxes are fickle by nature. I know that.”
The little fox: ???
Yuan Zheng caught the expression that said I’m about to curse you out and blinked with amusement.
“But I also heard something,” he added softly. “When a fox bites someone, there are only two reasons. Either it wants to kill them… or it likes them.”
He lifted another flower crown he’d been weaving and dangled it playfully before the fox’s eyes. “And I think my little fox bit me because he liked me.”
Yuan Zheng’s smile was gentle, affectionate in a way Li Cheng had never seen before.
He said, “I like my little fox, too.”
Hearing that, Li Cheng—still in his fox form—couldn’t pretend he wasn’t happy.
I like my little fox, too.
What a beautiful thing to hear.
He loved hearing Yuan Zheng say words like that.
Seeing the faint curve at the corners of the fox’s eyes, Yuan Zheng ran his palm over his back.
“If you’re not mad anymore, why don’t you change back?”
The little fox let out a soft whimper.
After a moment, his form shimmered—and he turned back into himself.
Still in Yuan Zheng’s arms.
Li Cheng lifted his gaze. The face before him was Zhou Ci’s.
Even knowing they were the same person, he still whispered, “Change back.”
“Change back?” Yuan Zheng’s lips curved slightly. “You’re not afraid of me anymore?”
“I am.”
Li Cheng paused, then met his eyes. “Let me bully you once, and I won’t be.”
Yuan Zheng raised an eyebrow.
Bully?
What kind of bullying?
He wrapped his arm around Li Cheng’s waist. “How do you want to bully me?”
Li Cheng suddenly pushed him down into the sea of flowers, pinning Yuan Zheng’s wrists above his head.
“Like this!” he declared, completely serious—and maybe even a little excited.
“Oh.”
Yuan Zheng’s “oh” was pure mockery, laced with laughter he couldn’t quite hide.
“Then, little fox, do you know what comes next?”
Li Cheng’s eyes darted slightly.
Next, obviously, comes kissing.
Then clothes come off.
Then more kissing.
Before he could act, a firm hand caught the back of his neck and pulled him down sharply.
Li Cheng’s eyes flew wide; his balance broke, and he collapsed straight into Yuan Zheng’s chest.
“Mm…”
