- Chapter 67 - “Foxfire and Gunfire”
The young boy grabbed Li Cheng’s hand, his blood smearing across Li Cheng’s palm and sleeve.
His voice was young, soft but determined. “I can do it, Master. Please refine me—use me as your own!”
Li Cheng frowned at the sight, a flicker of hesitation crossing his gaze. The boy already looked exhausted, on the verge of collapse.
【Master Fox, he’s very weak right now. I suggest you don’t refine him yet.】
Li Cheng looked down at the boy’s blood staining his skin and clothes, his eyes dark and dangerous.
The man holding the spirit-hunting gun in front of them, hearing Li Cheng’s words, finally realized this was trouble. His expression turned scornful.
One of the men snapped harshly, “You dare get in the way of the Contracted Spirit Division’s target?”
Another raised his gun, aiming directly at the boy behind Li Cheng.
“Enough talk. If he’s hurt, we’ll send him to the hospital after. That spirit’s coming with us today!”
Contracted Spirit Division?
What was that place?
【Fox Master, the Contracted Spirit Division and the Weapon Research Center are opposing factions within the Realm of Illusions. They both study spirit beasts—but their research paths are completely different.】
【The Contracted Spirit Division is far more deranged, delving into terrifying, forbidden black domains.】
【You absolutely can’t let them take him! Their methods are horrific!】
Li Cheng exhaled softly, “Sorry, gentlemen. That’s my child.”
His hand curled slightly into a fist, his tone full of disdain. “If you want him—come take him yourselves.”
With that, Li Cheng stepped forward.
There were six men in total, and none of them took him seriously.
They hunted spirit beasts for a living—why would they fear an unarmed man?
“You asked for it. Don’t blame us when you die.”
The leader squeezed the trigger in one swift motion.
A streak of white light shot toward Li Cheng, blindingly fast—impossible to dodge.
The man even had time to call the police. “Hello, precinct? We’ve got someone obstructing official business. Just trace the IP for his corpse.”
He smirked disdainfully and hung up the holographic feed.
But Li Cheng didn’t fall.
There was no scream, no cry for mercy.
Instead, the man saw only a flash of movement—his wrist suddenly wrenched backward at a speed faster than the bullet itself.
“Ah!!!” Pain exploded through his arm, sharp as bone shattering. Cold sweat broke out across his forehead.
The spirit-hunting gun slipped from his grasp.
Li Cheng caught it midair, then tossed it to the boy behind him.
The boy caught the weapon immediately and aimed it at the group.
The men from the Contracted Spirit Division were no longer so relaxed.
How could this man move so fast?
Faster than a spirit beast—impossible!
No human should be capable of such speed.
“Kill him!” someone shouted.
Another raised his weapon and fired.
Li Cheng dodged the sneak attack from behind with a low grunt, then flipped the attacker over his shoulder and slammed him hard onto the ground.
Boom!
The boy, seeing another bullet whizz toward Li Cheng’s side, fired without hesitation.
The two bullets collided midair, bursting apart in a flash of energy that rippled outward in waves.
Though they outnumbered Li Cheng, the men were quickly losing ground.
Within minutes, their guns had all been knocked away.
Forced into close combat, they didn’t last long—barely two minutes later, they were bruised, swollen, and gasping for breath.
Li Cheng pressed his boot onto the leader’s shoulder, the captured gun aimed straight at his forehead.
“Well?” Li Cheng looked down coldly. “Can I take him now?”
Sweat rolled down the man’s temple in fat beads.
Li Cheng’s gaze dropped and lifted again, deep and terrifying.
“S-spare me! You can have the spirit beast!” the man stammered, fingers clawing at the dirt, ready to fling it into Li Cheng’s eyes the moment he looked away.
Li Cheng shifted, pressing down on the man’s hand with his boot. “When you pull tricks like that, learn to hide it from your eyes.”
“Aaaagh!!” The man’s fingers felt like they were being crushed. He curled up in agony, legs trembling.
Li Cheng glanced at the pathetic heap of men on the ground. He had no interest in wasting more time—dusk was falling, and he still had to get home to his wife.
But before he could even move his foot away—
Sirens wailed in the distance.
Li Cheng’s brows darkened.
【Fox Master, the police from the Realm of Illusions are here!】
【This alley’s a dead end—there’s only one way out.】
The men on the ground relaxed slightly at the sound of sirens. At least their lives were no longer in danger.
Li Cheng tossed the gun aside, letting it land in the mud.
The police would naturally side with humans. The situation wasn’t in his favor.
He looked at the boy covered in blood. Forcing a refinement now would harm them both.
Hiding him within his divine consciousness would be the best choice.
A faint purple gleam flickered in Li Cheng’s eyes as he took two steps toward the boy.
He spoke directly through a mental thread—only the boy could hear him.
“Listen.”
The boy’s gaze trembled, but he focused instantly, waiting for Li Cheng’s instructions.
“I’ll open my divine realm. Hide inside.”
“Don’t be afraid. I’ve got you.”
Hearing the words, the boy raised his bloodstained hand and pressed it to his forehead.
“Yes, Master.”
A crimson flower bloomed on his brow.
The moment Li Cheng opened his divine consciousness, the boy dissolved into a wisp of scarlet mist—vanishing completely.
Unseen, the mist slipped into Li Cheng’s eyes.
The men watching froze, stunned.
In the Realm of Illusions, spiritual networks bound every spirit beast. Their power was heavily restricted.
To disappear into thin air—no spirit beast could do that.
They were now burning with curiosity about who that boy truly was.
As the sirens drew closer, Li Cheng’s eyes returned to normal.
Tch.
He clicked his tongue, narrowing his gaze.
So what now—straight to the detention center?
【Relax, just call your husband to bail you out.】
Li Cheng’s thoughts churned.
He couldn’t blow his cover. His wife still didn’t like him yet—he had to play the obedient role for now.
The police floodlights swept into the alley.
Li Cheng smirked slightly—then his knees buckled, and he collapsed dramatically to the ground.
The movement was so smooth and practiced that the battered men just stared, dumbfounded.
