- Chapter 67 - The Fox’s Command
The warmth of smooth, delicate skin brushed lightly against his face—like silk, like water, soft and fleeting.
Zhou Ci’s fingertips trembled, an unfamiliar itch rising in his chest. Even the ends of his hair tingled.
When Li Cheng’s lips finally left his cheek, Zhou Ci still hadn’t recovered.
His thick, dark lashes fluttered twice in quick confusion.
And the culprit—after kissing him—simply walked away.
Watching Li Cheng stride toward the door of the marriage registry office, Zhou Ci froze for two whole seconds.
He’d… kissed him?
Damn it!
Suddenly, a holographic screen flickered before Zhou Ci’s eyes, flashing red warnings. A cold, mechanical voice sounded in his ear—one only he could hear:
“Mr. Zhou, your body is experiencing abnormal symptoms. Heart rate three times above normal. Would you like me to summon your personal physician?”
Zhou Ci flicked his hand sharply, dismissing the screen into nothingness.
With a low grunt, he turned on his heel and strode out.
The moment he left, the entire marriage office erupted into chaos.
They looked at each other, eyes wide, hearts racing.
“Oh my god! That was Zhou Ci—Zhou Ci!”
“Did Zhou Ci actually get married?” One clerk still stared at the direction Zhou Ci had gone, eyes dazed.
“No way!” another woman’s hand trembled, still reeling in disbelief. “He really came here in person to register his marriage… I almost died of fright—I didn’t even dare look at him.”
“Did you see who his partner was? A total nobody? Who is that? I’ve never even heard of him!” another person at the front desk joined in the gossip.
“No clue. But why would Zhou Ci marry an ordinary person? Isn’t he—”
The woman’s voice trailed off into a whisper.
“Who knows…”
——
When Li Cheng reached the entrance, he stopped, staring blankly at the wide street outside.
If they left him here, knowing his terrible sense of direction…
He’d never find his way back.
But he couldn’t go back now.
Li Cheng glanced around cautiously and asked A-Keng in his mind: Are you sure my tail is somewhere around here?
【Yes, Fox Host. It’s within one kilometer.】
Li Cheng turned slightly, looking at Zhou Ci as he exited the registry office. The man seemed to deliberately avoid his gaze.
Li Cheng took a small step closer, lifted his hand, and began gesturing: “I’d like to go home and grab a few things… is that okay?”
He pressed his lips together, eyes quietly searching Zhou Ci’s for an answer.
Zhou Ci crossed his arms. “The bar owner said your father sold you there. Where exactly do you plan to go? Back to your father? Or the bar owner?”
Li Cheng bit his lip, watery eyes flickering. His gaze softened, shimmering faintly. “So… I can’t?”
“Tsk.” Zhou Ci’s brow furrowed in irritation. The look of someone on the verge of tears grated on him. His hand moved roughly to wipe away the faint mist gathering at the corner of Li Cheng’s eyes.
But when his hand came near, Li Cheng instinctively flinched back—like someone long accustomed to being struck.
Zhou Ci’s irritation deepened at that reaction.
“Don’t cry!”
At the sharp tone, Li Cheng’s body trembled. He forced himself to stand still.
“I heard your father used to beat you,” Zhou Ci said flatly.
Li Cheng’s fingers fidgeted, but he said nothing. He lowered his head—a silent admission.
“I’ll have someone go with you,” Zhou Ci said coldly.
Li Cheng waved his hands quickly in refusal:
“Mr. Zhou, you’re busy. You don’t have to bother with me. I’ll be back soon.”
At that moment, an urgent voice sounded in Zhou Ci’s ear—one of his researchers from the Weapons Development Center:
“Sir, emergency situation!”
Zhou Ci’s brows furrowed deeply. He glanced at Li Cheng. “Be back before dark.”
Li Cheng nodded immediately.
Zhou Ci brushed a hand past his ear. “Go on.” He walked away in the opposite direction, already focused on the incoming transmission.
As soon as Zhou Ci’s figure vanished, Li Cheng turned on his heel and slipped away, footsteps light and fast—gone in seconds.
When Zhou Ci finally looked back, Li Cheng had already disappeared.
He narrowed his eyes. “So fragile-looking, yet he moves that fast?”
——
Li Cheng’s steps were light, swift, silent. Where is it? he asked.
【Nine hundred meters ahead—at the boundary between human and demon territory.】
He sped up.
Following A-Keng’s guidance, he arrived at a narrow, dimly lit corner. The darkness was nearly absolute.
There were faint sounds ahead—rustling, shifting.
Li Cheng slowed, eyes sharp.
In the corner, several men were pointing guns at a young boy dressed in tattered clothes.
The boy looked fifteen or sixteen—thin, but with a fierce light in his eyes.
The armed men all wore matching uniforms.
Li Cheng braced a hand on the wall and observed silently. Why would researchers from the Weapons Center be hunting a demon beast? To study them?
【Essentially, yes. The Weapons Research Center extracts genetic material from demon beasts to create weapons capable of destroying them.】
【That’s why demon beasts in the Illusory Realm are all under human control.】
Before A-Keng’s words even faded, Li Cheng heard one of the uniformed men say coldly:
“Capture him alive. Dr. Ji said his body composition is unique—we still don’t know what kind of beast he’s turned from. Very valuable research material.”
【Ha! Fox Host, they have no idea what kind of creature your tail actually is.】
Li Cheng: ……
He glanced again. The cornered boy clenched his fists and growled, “You’re all courting death!”
The men closed in, the pressure around him heavy and suffocating.
The boy’s injuries bled freely down his arm, blood dripping onto the ground. His neck, chest, and thigh were all slashed and bruised.
Li Cheng’s gaze softened slightly. He turned his wrist, red spiritual mist coiling between his fingers like smoke.
He whispered softly, “Come here.”
His voice—light, ethereal—seemed to thread directly into the boy’s mind, bypassing all distance.
The moment the words reached him, the boy’s head snapped toward Li Cheng. His pupils widened in shock.
M–Master…!
It was his master!
His lips parted, astonished beyond words. Then he moved—without hesitation, feet flying toward Li Cheng.
The instant he saw his master standing there, all fear vanished.
His master hadn’t abandoned him. He’d come to find him.
Ever since he’d fallen into the Illusory Realm, he’d lived each day hunted by humans—because they couldn’t identify his transformation, both factions had placed a high bounty on his head.
They all wanted to lock him away in some frozen lab.
But now… his master had come.
He wouldn’t have to live like that anymore. Never again.
The boy sprinted to Li Cheng’s side, while the armed men chased close behind.
“Master!” he cried out, trembling but overjoyed.
Li Cheng gently patted his head, then stepped forward, shielding the boy behind him.
“Don’t be afraid.”
The men caught up, guns raised.
The leader sneered. “A human protecting a demon? Now that’s rare.”
Another one smirked mockingly. “Kid, interfering with official duties in the Illusory Realm is a crime. You really want to protect a demon?”
A faint red glint flickered in Li Cheng’s eyes.
Seeing the blood dripping from the boy’s arm, his expression grew darker.
He tilted his head slightly. “Then tell me… what do I need to do to take him with me?”
He took another step forward, tone calm but cold.
“Knock you all down—would that be enough?”
As the words fell, he looked back at the boy, his voice steady yet commanding, carried by a thread of spiritual connection.
“Now.”
“Will you fight for me?”
