- Chapter 71 - A Dangerous Kind of Tenderness
Zhou Ci instinctively caught the soft, warm body that suddenly fell into his arms.
Just as he had imagined—supple, boneless, almost fluid beneath his palms. Even through the thin fabric, he could feel how lean the body was.
Li Cheng’s face was flushed with a faint, dew-like blush, and Zhou Ci’s sharp eyes searched him closely. Aside from a bit of dazed confusion, there was nothing else unusual about him.
That was strange. It shouldn’t be like this.
Even in a state like this, Li Cheng was still throwing himself into his arms.
Zhou Ci didn’t hold back. He simply scooped him up.
Li Cheng’s eyes stayed fixed on him—neither avoiding nor revealing much emotion, only calm detachment.
After tonight, Zhou Ci might start doubting his own suspicions.
That was to Li Cheng’s advantage.
As thoughts tangled in his head, he suddenly felt himself being laid down on the soft, comfortable bed.
Li Cheng instinctively looped his arms around Zhou Ci before he could move away, his fingers signing rapidly, like knitting a sweater: “Hold me.”
Hold him?
Zhou Ci’s hand froze. What was going on?
Why did his heartbeat suddenly start racing uncontrollably?
Li Cheng’s warm breath fanned against his neck, his body inexplicably clingy. He signed again: “Hold me.”
When Zhou Ci felt Li Cheng’s hands reach for his, clutching them softly, Li Cheng’s gaze carried faint traces of grievance. He stared at Zhou Ci for a long time before signing again: “Don’t go.”
Zhou Ci’s brow furrowed deeply.
The gene serum meant to expose monsters wasn’t harmful to humans.
At worst, it would act like a strong sedative.
Seeing Li Cheng in this half-drowsy, half-dreamy state—could it be that he was simply… sleepy?
Impossible. Li Cheng had to be half-beast. Zhou Ci couldn’t have been mistaken.
But the effects of the serum should’ve taken hold by now, and the person before him still hadn’t shown a hint of his beast form.
In fact, his reaction was identical to that of an ordinary human.
Zhou Ci frowned in disbelief. He’d seen Li Cheng’s fox form with his own eyes before.
He couldn’t possibly be human.
Then what was going on?
Could it be that a half-beast’s power exceeded that of an ordinary beast, making the serum useless against him?
Zhou Ci pushed Li Cheng aside and stood by the bed, studying him.
The beautiful fox’s eyes shimmered with something beyond mere drowsiness—an emotion that stirred the air itself.
Li Cheng’s lashes lowered slightly, and then—recklessly—he leaned forward and kissed him.
Every nerve in Zhou Ci’s body seemed to jolt awake.
But the moment their lips brushed, Zhou Ci pushed him away, chest heaving violently.
Li Cheng’s fingers curled faintly.
If his body reacted the same way as a human’s after taking the serum…
Perhaps he could use that to his advantage.
Propping himself up, Li Cheng looked at Zhou Ci, eyes brimming with a dark, restless desire anyone could read.
His fingers moved again, signing slowly: “Do you… find me disgusting?”
Zhou Ci froze. Disgusting…
Right.
Shouldn’t he?
Every time someone else so much as touched him, disgust and violent irritation would surge up instantly. Yet when Li Cheng had just kissed him… that feeling never came.
Seeing Li Cheng lower his gaze, visibly hurt, Zhou Ci blurted out before he could stop himself, “No!”
Li Cheng’s fingers caught his hand, then hesitated, withdrawing again. “Can you stay?”
Zhou Ci’s mind was in chaos. Why hadn’t Li Cheng revealed his beast form yet?
Instead… he was seducing him.
Li Cheng caught the fleeting emotion in Zhou Ci’s eyes—something conflicted, almost flustered. His own expression grew faintly amused, thoughtful.
Under the dim light, Li Cheng’s face was even more flushed than before, his beauty softened by a mist-like haze that stirred something dangerous and unsteady in Zhou Ci’s chest.
Zhou Ci hadn’t intended to stay. He never imagined the gene serum would make Li Cheng react like this.
He’d expected Li Cheng to reveal his beast form—or turn violent, even murderous.
Never this.
And certainly not for the serum to act like some kind of stimulant.
Zhou Ci loathed physical contact, let alone this kind of intimate proximity.
So he left him there.
“I still have official matters to deal with. Get some rest.”
With that, Zhou Ci practically fled the room.
Li Cheng blinked after him, stunned.
“…What the hell?”
For the first time, he began to wonder if he even deserved to call himself a fox.
After Zhou Ci left, Li Cheng rose from the bed and stepped out, only to find the hall empty.
Where did he go?
A’Keng’s voice answered instead, “Host, a side mission has been triggered.”
Li Cheng frowned. “Tell me where Zhou Ci went first.”
“Host, a vicious fox attacked more than a dozen people in the Void District within half an hour. The police couldn’t capture it and requested aid from the Weapons Research Center. Zhou Ci went there personally.”
Li Cheng’s brows drew together. “Personally?”
“That fox has been on the Void Realm’s kill list for a while. For a beast with that much power, Zhou Ci naturally wouldn’t pass up the chance.”
“The Soul Contract Division is there too—their goal’s the same beast.”
As Li Cheng showered, he asked calmly, “Is it that strong?”
“It’s not native to the Void Realm. It came from the Divine-Demon World, so the Void Realm’s spiritual network has almost no effect on it. Zhou Ci’s in real danger.”
“Our mission,” A’Keng continued, “is to capture it and bring it back to the Divine-Demon World.”
Li Cheng turned off the water and met his reflection in the mirror, his lips curving.
A fight.
He’d always liked fights.
“Since the mission dropped out of nowhere,” he said lazily, “you’ll need to neutralize this drug first.”
“Host, I’ll use my upgrade points to do it.”
As soon as A’Keng finished, the fog in Li Cheng’s mind lifted instantly.
“Didn’t spoil you for nothing,” he muttered with a smirk.
Once dressed, he left the house.
Following the system’s signal, he arrived at the Void District. The streets were eerily silent, and the holographic signs flashing everywhere all read the same: Danger—Evacuate.
He slowed when he heard the crack of spirit-hunting guns ahead.
“The fox will sense your divine aura,” A’Keng reminded him. “It may try to flee. Capture it—don’t let it disrupt the balance of this realm.”
Li Cheng’s gaze was calm, almost indifferent.
The closer he got to the gunfire, the slower his steps became.
Night had fallen; shadows were deep enough to hide anything.
From the corner of a side street, he finally saw the scene ahead.
And the moment he saw the fox, he let out a soft hum.
No wonder no one here could catch it.
A feral spirit beast—five-tailed white fox, unmistakably from the Divine-Demon World. There was no mistaking that kind of creature for anything born of this place.
In its human form, the beast still had pointed ears, sharp claws, and eyes red as blood—enough to make anyone flinch.
Amid his observation, Li Cheng spotted Zhou Ci and the armed researchers from the Weapons Center.
They were firing gene rifles—but on the fox, the bullets had no effect, like scratching an itch through armor.
Within meters of the beast lay blood and carnage—not its own, but from those it had torn apart.
The entire scene was chilling.
And opposite the fox, the Soul Contract Division stood poised, one of them holding a beast-capture net—the same man who’d handed Li Cheng his business card at the station.
The moment that man spotted Li Cheng, his expression twisted into a sneer.
“Well, well,” he drawled. “The future wife’s here.”
Li Cheng ignored him, his gaze settling only on Zhou Ci—standing at the very front of the group.
