- Chapter 72 - The Fox Host Enters the Battlefield
Dressed in a black shirt with a special vest over it to guard against beast claws, he looked strikingly similar to a modern police officer in tactical gear.
The way he held his gun—cold, sharp—gave him the presence of a soldier.
Zhou Ci fired his soul-extraction gun again, the round blazing toward the fox demon.
But it was easily deflected.
How reckless. Against overwhelming power, Zhou Ci’s persistence bordered on foolishness.
“Host, your husband can’t back away,” the system voice echoed in Li Cheng’s mind. “He’s the director of the Weapons Research Center—he has both the duty and the burden of protecting humanity. No matter how dangerous it gets, he’ll always step forward.”
Li Cheng was about to move when he noticed members of the Qi Ling Division dragging out several iron crates—and opening them.
In an instant, a pack of wolf demons burst from the crates, charging toward the fox demon.
Within moments, seven or eight wolf demons were locked in a violent melee, claw and fang against the fox’s silver-white fur.
But something was wrong. Each wolf demon had a collar clamped tightly around its neck.
Li Cheng’s expression turned dark. The Qi Ling Division… had they turned demons into house pets?
He furrowed his brows, mind growing heavy as he watched the scene.
“Fox Host,” the system explained, “the Qi Ling Division experiments on demons. Their methods are terrifying. They bind them with high-voltage collars and force them into servitude. Those who disobey are electrocuted to ash.”
“They’re also developing hybrid genes—fusing human and demon traits—to grant humans the lifespan and vitality of demons.”
Human-demon hybrids? Immortality for mortals?
If they discovered his half-human, half-demon nature…
That would push their research to a whole new level.
A half-demon—something the False Realm had never seen before—would make their blood boil with excitement.
“So, Fox Host,” the system warned, “if your identity is exposed, the Qi Ling Division will show you cruelty a hundred times worse than Zhou Ci’s department. Be careful. The original host’s fate ended with his brainstem extracted and his core dissected. He didn’t even leave a corpse behind.”
Li Cheng felt a chill creep down his spine.
His husband wanting to use him as a lab rat was one thing—but this? If his identity got out, everyone in the False Realm would want to cut him open.
The shrill howls of the wolf demons yanked him back to the present.
By now, several wolf demons lay dead, their blood soaking into the cracked ground.
Li Cheng spread his divine sense, his hand twisting slightly in the air.
A flash of light shimmered—a long golden chain appeared in his grasp, humming faintly with divine power.
He weighed it in his hand.
The Demon-Locking Chain—a gift from the Lord of Ten Thousand Illusions.
It would come in handy tonight.
But with so many people here, he couldn’t risk collateral damage. He’d have to lure the fox demon away first.
He shrank the chain into a delicate golden bracelet and wound it around his wrist.
Just as he began to move, he spotted his little tail lunging straight toward the fox demon.
What the hell was that idiot doing?!
“Host,” the system said, “your tail sensed your intent to fight the fox demon—it went ahead on its own.”
Li Cheng’s expression darkened. Was it brain-dead? Charging into a fight while still injured—what, trying to earn performance points?!
The fox demon narrowed its bloody eyes at the approaching figure. “Another human lapdog?!”
His voice dripped contempt. Demons were meant to rule above humans—yet here, they lived like slaves, bowing and scraping for their masters.
Pathetic.
Li Cheng saw his little fox form quickly losing ground. He sprinted forward, closing the distance in seconds.
At the same moment, Zhou Ci spotted him.
For the first time, the hand gripping his gun trembled.
A sharp panic seized his chest.
Why was Li Cheng here?!
Even the agents from the Weapons Research Center were staying behind the spirit net’s barrier—yet Li Cheng was charging straight toward the fox demon!
Was he insane?!
And judging by his movement, he wasn’t attacking—he was going to save that boy lying wounded on the ground.
Zhou Ci broke into a run, shouting, “Cover me!”
Ignoring the protests behind him, he pushed through the spirit net.
“Boss! It’s too dangerous!” someone shouted, but Zhou Ci was already gone.
The closer he got, the thicker the air became with blood.
The fox demon’s pupils shrank when Li Cheng approached.
A nine-tailed fox god…
What was a nine-tailed fox god doing in the False Realm?!
He knew he couldn’t possibly defeat one—but what he didn’t know was that this nine-tailed god had already lost his tails and his divinity.
The fox demon trembled under Li Cheng’s divine aura, unaware that his opponent was far weaker than he appeared.
Li Cheng understood this well.
As long as the fox demon didn’t realize he’d lost his divine power, it wouldn’t dare make a move against him.
He stopped in front of it. The fox demon stumbled back two steps.
Li Cheng knelt to lift his injured tail gently, his voice carrying telepathically—icy, measured, and commanding:
“You have three options.”
“First, change to human form and come with me out of the False Realm.”
“Second, I destroy your cultivation, cut off your five tails, and still take you out of here.”
He stepped closer, his golden eyes narrowing.
“Third… you die.”
The fox demon felt crushed beneath that divine aura.
In the divine-demon world, he’d been nothing more than a minor spirit.
But here, no demon could rival him—humans were mere insects.
He couldn’t go back. He refused to return to obscurity when he could rule as a king here.
He turned, ready to flee.
He couldn’t fight a nine-tailed fox—but he could sure as hell run from one.
Just as he moved, Li Cheng took another step forward.
And then—
“Li Cheng!”
“Are you out of your mind?!”
A strong force yanked him backward.
When he lifted his gaze, he saw Zhou Ci’s broad back before him, muscles tensed and protective.
Li Cheng froze.
He hadn’t even noticed when Zhou Ci arrived. But now, looking at that wide back, something inside him eased.
For the first time in a long while, he felt safe—like he could let down every guard and simply lean on this man.
Zhou Ci pulled a light bomb from his vest and hurled it toward the fox demon.
A burst of flame and smoke erupted, laced with a strange chemical stench.
Then a familiar warmth wrapped around Li Cheng’s hand—Zhou Ci’s large, calloused palm gripping his tightly.
Without hesitation, Zhou Ci dragged him out through the barrier.
Li Cheng stumbled, nearly tripping from the sudden pull.
Once they were outside the net, Zhou Ci shoved him away, face twisted in fury.
His tone was harsh, his voice cutting, his entire demeanor as cold as ice.
“Who told you to come here?!”
