- Chapter 95 - The Fox Who Bit Back
“What are you doing?” Li Cheng instinctively wrapped his arms around Zhou Ci’s neck.
Zhou Ci looked down at him, his voice low. “You said yourself this is how one repays a lifesaving debt.”
Li Cheng: “…What???”
“Hey—” Before he could finish, he was suddenly tossed onto the bed. His pupils flickered as Zhou Ci leaned over him.
Zhou Ci’s hand brushed against his cheek. “Say it.”
“Zhou Ci…” Li Cheng murmured softly.
“Not my name.” Zhou Ci’s fingers traced along his throat.
Of course, this man could never pass up a chance to take advantage. “Husband.”
A smile tugged at Zhou Ci’s lips. “Call me brother.”
Li Cheng clutched his shirt, resigned.
He turned his face aside, the tips of his ears burning. “B-Brother…”
“Again.”
“Brother…”
Just as the last syllable left his lips, Zhou Ci moved—
The moment Li Cheng’s mouth parted, Zhou Ci kissed him.
Li Cheng’s unfinished words melted into a muffled sound.
“Mmh…”
When Li Cheng woke the next morning, it was to A-Keng’s voice ringing in his mind.
【Host! Host! The fox spirit escaped!】
Li Cheng rubbed his temples and sat up. Where was Zhou Ci?
【He’s gone on a mission. Already left.】
【Host, the magnetic field of the False Realm is fluctuating intensely. The balance here seems to be shifting.】
Li Cheng frowned. What’s going on?
【Unknown variable.】
His eyes narrowed as his thoughts tangled. The fox spirit escaped from the Contract Division?
【Yes. It fled into the Forbidden Beast Forest. The Contract Division’s defense grid has been breached—they can’t track it. They’re keeping this incident quiet for now.】
Useless, Li Cheng thought grimly. I thought catching the fox spirit would buy them some peace, but no—they’ve already been hit right at home.
Then something struck him. Where’s the little tail?
【Went out with Zhou Ci.】
At that, Li Cheng got up, pulled on one of Zhou Ci’s casual outfits, and headed out the door.
When he arrived at the Beast Forest, thick smoke coiled through the air.
This was a place filled with mindless demon beasts—savage, bloodthirsty creatures. Humans were forbidden to enter.
Which, of course, made Li Cheng’s blood race.
A fight waiting to happen? That was his kind of fun.
He stepped cautiously into the forest.
When he reached the heart of the fog, visibility dropped to almost nothing—three meters out, the mist swallowed everything.
Li Cheng frowned. The Beast Forest is divided into four sectors. Which one am I in?
【Keep going straight. The deepest part leads to the Pit of a Hundred Beasts.】
The Pit of a Hundred Beasts? What’s that?
【It’s the territory of the Demon King of the False Realm.】
Excuse me? Demon King? Isn’t this realm ruled by humans? Since when was there a demon king here?
【Of course there is. The Demon King’s powerful. The top ranks signed a non-aggression pact with him ages ago. Best not to provoke him.】
Stronger than the fox spirit?
【If the fox spirit were stronger, he’d be the demon king. So yes—Demon King wins.】
A sudden shriek from A-Keng made him freeze.
【Ahhhh! Host! Behind you—the fox spirit’s right behind you!】
Li Cheng heard a sharp hiss of teeth.
He twisted his body in a flash, dodging the fox spirit’s sudden strike.
When he turned, the fox’s crimson eyes were locked on him, blazing with murderous intent.
That look—completely different from their first encounter.
Gone was the fear, the panic.
All that remained was malice.
And it wasn’t running anymore.
It was attacking.
Then, its voice confirmed Li Cheng’s worst thought:
“A fox who’s lost his ninth tail—can you still call yourself a god?”
“A useless cripple, daring to act divine before me.”
“You bluffed me once before. Lucky you.”
The fox spirit’s palm opened, a dark light swirling to life. From it, a black spiritual tail coiled and gathered strength.
“Today, I’ll finish you. I’ll dig out your golden core and make it mine!”
Its grin widened, smug and feral.
Li Cheng’s eyes narrowed slightly. How does it know I’ve lost my tail?
And now it wanted his golden core? (t/n: “golden core” or “jindan” refers to a cultivator’s inner spiritual power condensed into a core—essential for their strength and life force.)
Such arrogance.
“Tch.” Li Cheng raised a brow. “If you were that capable, you wouldn’t be living like a stray.”
The fox spirit burst out laughing. “We’ll see soon enough! Once I have your golden core, the False Realm will bow to me!”
It lunged forward, claws slashing.
Li Cheng’s wrist flicked sharply—an instant later, a spirit chain flashed into existence in his palm.
The fox froze mid-step. Recognition hit—it faltered.
That chain gleamed with golden light—alive with divine power.
Its confidence evaporated in an instant. Survival instinct kicked in.
It turned tail and bolted.
“Hey!” Li Cheng shouted after it, “Didn’t you come for my golden core? Don’t run now—come get it!”
He took off after it.
Through the fog.
Until the fox’s trail led him to the Pit of a Hundred Beasts.
A massive palace loomed there, woven entirely from black wood—like a nest of writhing serpents climbing over one another.
The sight alone made his skin crawl.
Roars and screeches echoed together, layering into a chorus of horror.
It felt like stepping into a vampire’s den.
But the fox spirit had vanished.
Li Cheng glanced around.
There was a barrier here—an invisible one, shielding the beasts within.
He formed a seal with his hands. “Spirit Key—Break the Formation.”
Scarlet mist spread from his palms, expanding his field of perception.
But before the array could be fully undone, his spell shattered first.
A man dressed in black stood not far in front of him. Li Cheng had no idea when he’d appeared.
The red energy crawling across the ground was crushed under the man’s boot—
Scattered like smoke.
And in the blink of an eye, the barrier restored itself.
Li Cheng’s hand trembled slightly.
Did he just… stomp out my spell?
With his foot?
Was he kidding?
He lifted his gaze—and then came a voice, low and wickedly amused.
“Little one, you shouldn’t go breaking barriers at random.”
The instant Li Cheng saw the man’s face, the spirit chain slipped from his palm and fell to the ground with a sharp metallic clang.
