Just as Su Yu was about to hang up, there was some rustling on the other end, and a different voice started speaking.
“Hello, are you this gentleman’s girlfriend? He’s drunk. Could you please come and pick him up?” It sounded like a bartender.
Without thinking, Su Yu denied it immediately: “I’m not his girlfriend!”
The phone was on speaker, so Su Yu’s words were clearly heard by Qi Huaizhi. With his alcohol-clouded mind, he processed it for a second, then firmly declared: “She is!”
Su Yu: “I’m not.”
Qi Huaizhi: “She is!”
The bartender awkwardly chimed in, “Well… we’re about to close. Could you still come by?”
Su Yu had already made up her mind to stay away from the male lead. Nothing could convince her to go, not even if it were a life-or-death situation.
She shook her head furiously, even though no one could see her.
“I’ve already said I’m not his girlfriend, and I’m not coming. If you’re closing, just leave him by a street corner. He’s a grown man—what could possibly happen? He’ll sober up and find his way back home.”
The bartender hesitated: “But…”
Before he could finish, the phone was snatched back by Qi Huaizhi.
Through gritted teeth, he asked: “Su Yu, are you coming or not?”
The man, who wasn’t entirely drunk, had only one thought in his mind: Why is she so heartless, and how can he win her back?
Money? He was now worth over a hundred million. Looks? He knew he wasn’t lacking. Talent? He had built Huaiyu from the ground up and held several technology patents.
How could someone like that ugly guy steal Su Yu away?
Su Yu responded resolutely: “No!”
“Then just wait for the Su family to go bankrupt!”
Furious, Qi Huaizhi threw down that line and coldly hung up.
Su Yu: “…”
【Is he a primary school student? So immature!】
The system also thought the male lead was being a bit reckless tonight: 【Maybe he really is drunk—alcohol makes people emotionally unstable.】
For some reason, Su Yu felt uneasy at his last words.
【Do you think he’ll really go after the Su family?】
With the male lead’s halo, if Qi Huaizhi got serious, the Su family would be done for.
The system hesitated: 【So… are you going to go?】
Su Yu immediately denied it: 【No way! Even if I had to jump off a cliff, I wouldn’t go pick him up!】
Half an hour later, a heavily disguised figure stealthily entered the bar.
The system was speechless: 【…You’re playing a new version of ‘covering your ears while stealing a bell. [1]‘】
Do you really think no one will recognize you like that?
Su Yu wanted to cry: 【What else can I do? I can’t break character. The male lead shamelessly threatened me with the Su family, so I have to compromise.】
She mourned her nearly-failed mission for a moment.
Just this once—never again.
It was past two in the morning, and the bar was nearly empty.
Su Yu glanced around casually and immediately spotted a man sitting in the corner, staring blankly at his phone, deep in thought.
She tightened her coat around herself and sneakily approached Qi Huaizhi.
But just as she got close, he suddenly looked up with a guarded expression—his eyes fierce yet slightly dazed and confused.
“Who are you? What do you want?”
Su Yu: “??… Didn’t you ask me to come pick you up?”
Qi Huaizhi thought for a moment, then seriously refuted: “I don’t need you. My girlfriend will come pick me up.”
Su Yu fell silent. She gritted her teeth and patiently asked: “Then who’s your girlfriend? I’ll help you call her.”
He fiddled with his phone for a moment before showing her the screen.
—It was a photo of them together from five years ago.
Staring at the familiar face in the photo, Su Yu went quiet again. After a long moment, she took off her hat and mask.
“Take a good look. Is it clear now?”
Having been threatened to go here in the middle of the night to pick up a drunk, only for him not to recognize her, Su Yu really wanted to throw her hat and mask in his face. How could he be such a jerk?
The system was focused on another detail—he still had their five-year-old photo?
Qi Huaizhi squinted at her for a few seconds, then suddenly softened. Without his suit, he looked clean and youthful, like the spirited young man from five years ago.
“Honey, you came?”
He looked like a fool.
Su Yu decided not to argue with a fool: “Yes, I came.”
She was fuming inside but kept her face expressionless, though her eyes were filled with grievance.
“I’m here, so can you let my family go?”
She leaned closer and helped Qi Huaizhi stand up with difficulty.
“I finally found my biological parents. Even if I lied to you before, can’t I just apologize? Why do you have to do this? Why are you trying to ruin the stable life I’ve worked so hard to get?”
“All I wanted was to live a better life—what’s wrong with that? You couldn’t give me a better life, that’s why I broke up with you. You’re the one who lacks self-awareness and keeps clinging on, and now you’re trying to ruin my life.”
“If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be forced into marrying that ugly bastard. This is all your fault!”
“Qi Huaizhi, why are you so cruel?”
As she struggled to help him up, Su Yu vented her frustrations, recounting all the grievances she had suffered.
She was so caught up in her emotions that she couldn’t stop the tears from flowing.
For a moment, Su Yu felt like the most pitiful person in the world.
She was too focused to notice that the man next to her, though unsteady on his feet, had a brief moment of clarity in his eyes, with a complicated expression flashing across his face.
Qi Huaizhi wasn’t drunk.
He had carefully played the fool just to see this woman who made him both love and hate her.
As her intermittent accusations and quiet sobs filled the air, Qi Huaizhi lowered his head, silent.
This woman seemed to have a natural talent for twisting the truth—she was always the most pitiful, the most wronged. Everyone else’s issues paled in comparison. A simple apology, and she thought everything could be forgiven.
How could it be that easy?
Everyone had to be accountable for their actions.
Qi Huaizhi wasn’t interested in determining who was right or wrong. He only knew one thing: Su Yu—he would never let her go.
Trying to escape him? Dream on!
“We’re close to your house now, right?” Su Yu sniffled as she wiped away her tears and threatened, “If you don’t remember, I’ll just drop you off at the next street corner and leave you to find your own way home.”
Just as her patience was wearing thin, Qi Huaizhi slowly gave an address.
Su Yu gritted her teeth, helping him into a taxi, shooting him an angry glare before collapsing back against the seat, gasping for breath, her cheeks flushed, and her chest rising and falling slightly.
“Xiao Yu.” Qi Huaizhi suddenly called out.
The familiar yet distant nickname—it had been years since he’d last called her that. But now that he said it, it felt so natural.
Su Yu instinctively turned her head, pausing for a second as she realized what he had just called her.
“Xiao Yu, I miss you.”
Under the guise of being drunk, Qi Huaizhi finally said the words he had kept buried for five years.
However, there wasn’t a trace of emotion in the woman’s eyes. She smiled, but it was cold. Her brows slightly furrowed.
“You’re drunk.”
Qi Huaizhi smiled bitterly to himself. Maybe, just maybe, he really was drunk.
[1] The phrase “covering your ears while stealing a bell” is a Chinese idiom that describes the futility of trying to hide one’s wrongdoing. It implies that even if you try to block out the sound of the bell you’re stealing, it won’t prevent others from hearing it and knowing what you’re doing.
