- Chapter 1 - "I like you!"
“I like you!”
Ruan Tang poured her heart out… to a utility pole.
The system pressed a hand to its nonexistent forehead in exasperation.
“The mission is to confess to the campus heartthrob. What are you doing confessing to a pole, you little idiot Tangtang!”
Ruan Tang blushed and whispered, “It’s my first mission… I got nervous and wanted to practice a little more…”
She had just been bound to this quick transmigration system.
Her very first mission in this world was to play the role of a throwaway supporting character—to confess to the school heartthrob, only to be brutally rejected.
She was so anxious she hadn’t even eaten breakfast. First thing in the morning, she came out to rehearse her lines.
After all, she’d never done anything like this before. She had zero experience!
【He’s here—he’s here—Tangtang, he’s coming! Go! GO!】
Ruan Tang nearly smacked into the utility pole in shock.
When she looked up, a tall, striking young man was walking straight toward her.
He was wearing a simple white shirt, yet it looked stunning on him. His complexion was fair, features sharp and cold with a faint hint of mixed heritage. His blue eyes were deep as the sea and breathtakingly clear.
His aura, however, was distant and unapproachable, like a flower on a mountain peak—too beautiful to reach.
“Oh my god, look! It’s Zhou Yi!!! He’s so hot!”
“I wanna secretly snap a pic and make it my wallpaper, but I feel like he’d kill me with just one cold glare.”
“Exactly! Zhou Yi’s good-looking, no doubt, but he’s so icy cold. I don’t even dare get within a meter of him…”
But just then, a petite and adorable girl slowly approached him.
Everyone froze for three seconds—and then exploded.
“Holy crap, who is that?! She’s got guts!!!”
“Is she actually about to confess to him?!”
“The last girl who tried got stared down so hard she burst into tears! It was brutal! Where is this chick getting her courage?!”
Under the intense gaze of the crowd, Ruan Tang came to a stop in front of Zhou Yi.
She took a deep breath.
You’ve got this, Ruan Tang! You practiced this a million times! You’ll nail it!
Even the system was cheering her on with tender affection:
“Go, Tangtang! You’re the best!!!”
Ruan Tang steadied herself, pulled out a sheet of paper from her pocket, and held it out to Zhou Yi.
Then, as if jumping off a cliff, she shut her eyes and recited the line she’d rehearsed to perfection:
“I—I—I like—hiss…”
She bit her tongue. Ow.
Pain filled her eyes with tears, and her soft, delicate peach blossom eyes shimmered with mist. She looked absolutely pitiful—and heartbreakingly adorable.
The crowd, waiting eagerly for the drama to unfold, fell silent once more.
Damn. So. Freaking. Cute.
Zhou Yi was stunned.
He had actually noticed this little dummy earlier.
From afar, he’d seen her standing across from the utility pole, face serious and intense, talking to… who knew what.
Adorable.
Curious, he’d decided to get a closer look.
He didn’t expect her to walk right up to him.
Bold move.
On the outside, Zhou Yi still looked calm and aloof, but deep down, he was starting to feel something stir.
Is she about to confess to me?
And then he saw her bite her tongue.
Her adorable little expression nearly made him burst out laughing—which would’ve shattered his cool, untouchable image.
He fought to suppress the upward tug of his lips as he took the sheet of paper from her hands.
“I accept.”
Gasps erupted from the stunned onlookers.
What the hell just happened?!
The flower on the mountain—just got picked?!!
But the most shocked of all… was Ruan Tang.
She stared wide-eyed at Zhou Yi, blinking in disbelief.
With her tongue still a little swollen, she stammered, “Y-you… what did you say?”
Zhou Yi’s eyes crinkled with a deeper smile as he reached out to ruffle her hair. It was soft—softer than he’d imagined.
“I said, I accept.”
Ruan Tang was stunned. !!!
The corners of Zhou Yi’s lips curled into the faintest of smiles, and his hand lingered atop her head, reluctant to move away.
Look at this little dummy—so happy she’s turned to stone.
But inside, Ruan Tang was screaming:
“System!!! He’s crazy! How could he say yes?! What about the mission to get ‘brutally rejected by the campus heartthrob’?! Doesn’t this mean I failed?!”
System: I don’t know if he’s crazy, but I’m about to go insane! What do we do now?!
Why isn’t the male lead following the script?! The storyline’s collapsing—wahhhh!
Ruan Tang was on the verge of panic, her eyes glistening, as restless as a frantic little ant on a hot skillet.
Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw the paper in Zhou Yi’s hand.
—It wasn’t the mission prop. It wasn’t the love letter.
It was a flyer someone had shoved into her hand that morning outside a bun shop.
She’d grabbed the wrong paper in her nervousness.
Ruan Tang’s eyes lit up. Inspiration struck.
“Zhou Yi, you’re saying you’ll buy me soup dumplings? You’re so sweet! Thank you!”
Zhou Yi slowly typed out a question mark in his mind.
He looked down at the “love letter” in his hand.
It was blank.
He flipped it over.
On the back, in big, bold print:
“Steamed Soup Dumplings – 20 Yuan per Basket – Huge Clearance Sale!”
Zhou Yi went silent: “……”
So this… is what it feels like to be embarrassingly mistaken.
Zhou Yi finally understood.
He had never been so humiliated.
“HAHAHAHA—oh my god, I’m dying! This is gonna keep me laughing for a whole year! Zhou Yi, Young Master Zhou, even you have days like this!”
A tall, strikingly handsome young man with unruly golden-blond hair was laughing so hard he nearly doubled over.
Next to him, Zhou Yi’s expression was darker than the bottom of a pot.
The look he shot his so-called friend was as cold as a winter wind.
“Lu Jie, are you done laughing?”
If he kept going, Zhou Yi couldn’t guarantee he wouldn’t wipe out the entire Lu family.
“Okay, okay, I’m done, ha…”
Lu Jie leaned against the railing, trying to catch his breath. His lips still curled in amusement, his bright eyes full of gleeful mischief.
“That girl’s something else. What’s her name? I want to meet her.”
Zhou Yi’s face instantly dropped. His brows furrowed hard.
“I thought you weren’t into women?”
Lu Jie waved a hand.
“Don’t say it like that. You make it sound like I’m into men.”
He tilted his head back and stared at the sky.
“I just think women are all the same. Boring.”
As the sole heir of the Lu family, he’d been swarmed by women trying to get close to him his entire life. He’d seen it all and grown utterly sick of it.
Compared to romance, he was far more interested in racing cars.
Lu Jie turned to look at his friend.
“You’re not into women either, right? You’re basically a monk.”
Zhou Yi remained aloof.
“I’m not interested.”
“What about her?”
Zhou Yi’s mind flashed to those wide, watery eyes. His heart skipped a beat—but then he remembered how utterly humiliated he’d just been. His lips pressed into a thin line.
He lied.
“Still not interested.”
Lu Jie smirked, the meaning in his smile impossible to miss.
“You said it. That means I’m free to—”
Before he could finish, Zhou Yi had already grabbed him by the collar.
His gaze turned icy, voice low and threatening.
“Don’t even think about it. Got it?”
“Alright, alright! I was just messing with you! You’re my brother—I’d never steal your girl!”
